"Well, I do kind of have an advantage," Steve replied with a bit of a grin. "I guess it's kind of obvious, but I'm Steve. This is James." He gestured to Bucky as he spoke.

Sam nodded to them both. "Sam," he said with a bit of a grin. "Nice to meet you both." He could tell James was a vet, but he didn't say anything yet. "So, should I be feeling supremely lazy that he could keep up with you running about thirteen miles in under half an hour and I couldn't do that on my best day?" He grinned playfully.

"Not at all," Steve started. Bucky jumped in at that point, feeling a bit more like his old self than usual.

"I was the second guy in line after him," he said with a lazy grin, giving Steve a good-natured punch on the arm.

Sam snorted at both of them. "Sounds like a hell of a line," he said. "But probably not as awesome as the line for the coffee shop down that way." His grin was all amusement.

"Is the coffee any good?" Steve asked. He was always up for a good coffee.

"Every time," Sam agreed with a grin. "They don't even mind me fresh from a run, long as I sit outside. Come on, I'll show you." He stretched a bit and quirked an eyebrow at them.

Steve glanced at Bucky, who just shrugged a bit, and they both followed Sam.

Sam led the way to his favorite coffee place, getting his normal coffee with some hazelnut flavoring and just a touch of hazelnut creamer. Then he stood aside to let Steve and Bucky get theirs.

Steve glanced at Bucky questioningly. Fortunately they'd already been to Starbucks before.

Bucky shrugged.

"Can't make the joke a second time," he said. "May as well get coffee."

Steve snorted but got coffees for both of them, handing one over to Bucky and going to join Sam at a table.

Bucky followed, trying to ignore the looks he was getting for his arm. He pulled a chair over and sat down on the end of the table.

Sam was good about ignoring his arm, instead just sipping his coffee.

"So, how's life in the tower?" He grinned a bit. "I see you most mornings, and I'm pretty sure half the planet knows where you live, so don't give me that look." Because he could already see the beginnings of Steve's disapproving face.

Steve was indeed working up to a disapproving face, and he sighed.

"It takes some getting used to," he admitted.

Sam was quiet for a moment. "Bed too big and too soft?" he guessed, his voice a little quieter. He looked at both of them.

Steve blinked.

"How'd you guess?" he asked. Bucky, on the other hand, just looked at Sam.

"You too, then," he said.

Sam quirked a half-smile. "When I first got home I thought my bed was going to swallow me. Used to have nightmares about it." He shrugged. "Got used to sleeping on rocks while I was over there."

"Same," Steve admitted, nodding.

"Snow," Bucky offered. "Sometimes dirt. Trees a couple times."

Sam nodded. "I slept on the floor for a while. Would drag my pillow and blankets down to the floor." He took another sip of his coffee.

Bucky and Steve both nodded. They had each done the same.

"It took a while to get used to a bed again," Steve agreed. Bucky didn't comment. He was still adjusting, himself.

"I ended up buying the hardest mattress I could find," Sam said with a snort. "Still use it, too. But man, the coffee is much better back here." He grinned, raising his cup a little in silent toast.

"Amen to that," Steve said, grinning back and raising his cup a little as well. Bucky followed suit.

Sam was quiet for a few more moments, observing the two. Clearly they were comfortable with each other, which was a good sign.

"You know, if you want, you should stop by my work sometime."

"Yeah?" Steve asked, interested. "Where do you work?"

"VA couple blocks from here." Sam smiled a little. "Might do you both a bit of good."

Steve considered for a moment, and glanced at Bucky, who shrugged and nodded.

"We'll try to make it," Steve said to Sam, nodding as well.
