"Not really, this place was out of the danger zone," Steve said. "Actually, I talked to their daughter. Didn't mean to. We were just sitting in the park and she looked like she was waiting for a bus, so we started talking, and I ended up convincing her that losing her boyfriend wasn't the end of the world and she didn't need to run away from New York."
Laurel just looked at him.
"You're just the ultimate nice guy," she said. "You're the guy other guys wish they could be." She paused. "That poor girl. She probably was about ready to marry you on the spot." |
Steve chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. "She was sixteen," he said. "Sixteen year olds do some stupid thing. Hell, Buck and I sure did."
"Oh even better," Laurel said, teasing. "She's probably still a little in love with you."
Steve shook his head, grinning a bit. "I don't know, she seems to have a new boyfriend, at least," he said. "For the moment."
"Well, that's good," Laurel said. She grinned. "And look, it always gets you a table here."
"Which is good, since I tend to come here when we don't have dinner in the tower," Steve said with a grin. "Or when I want some time out of the tower." Or, now, when he was on a date.
"Which probably ends up being three nights a week, on average?" Laurel teased. It was probably closer to once a week, she knew. Twice, if it was a particularly rough week.
Steve chuckled. "Only on a bad week," he said with a grin. "Although I could be persuaded to go out for dinner more often."
"I kind of wish we were back on the other coast, then," Laurel said with a small grin. "I knew of a few good places back there, and not just for dinner."
"Oh?" Steve raised an eyebrow at her. "I know of a good breakfast place around here, but nothing else in particular."
"I know of a good breakfast place too," Laurel said, grinning. "And a pretty good lunch place. And Dori showed me a good bakery."
Steve snickered. "She would know about the bakery," he said with a grin.
"Of course," Laurel said, grinning. "Mostly just so she could get ideas about what to make at home, and pointers about some of the complicated things."
Steve grinned. "No wonder she's practically a bakery herself now," he said. "I'm pretty sure Bucky will try living off her baking one day."
"She's been looking for an excuse to branch into savory pastries," Laurel said, grinning.
"I'll see if I can get Bucky to drop a hint." Steve grinned. Those two were so cute and they had no idea.
"Go for it," Laurel replied. Now they were back into familiar territory. It was always fun to push Bucky and Doreen together.
"Along with reminding him he has to ask her out," Steve said. "Before she asks him, because he will hate that."
Laurel snickered.
"You can remind him when we get back," she said. "For now, burgers. These had better be good, Steve, I'm trusting you on this place." |
"Oh these ones are good," Steve promised with a grin. "The shakes here are good, too."
"Good," Laurel said, grinning. "I love a good chocolate shake."
Steve grinned at that, because of course the chocolate shakes were the best. So when the waitress came to get their order, he got a classic cheeseburger and chocolate shake.
After a moment of thought, Laurel ordered the same thing. Hey, if Steve liked it, it must be good.
Steve grinned at her. "It's good, I promise," he said, leaning back in his seat.
