"I haven't named anything since I was a boy," John replied. He thought about it for a moment. "Let's find Bree and go back to Charlotte. Maybe between the four of us, we can come up with something."
|
Sherlock nodded and settled down to wait for John and Bree to come back.
Bree had just made herself a cup of tea and was heading back to the living area to relax and maybe cuddle John some. |
John smiled when he found her.
"Ah, there you are," he said. "Sherlock just arrived with some news. The egg hatched this morning, and apparently our dragons would like our help in coming up with a name for the little one." |
Bree blinked. That was a lot of information to absorb. But she nodded with a little grin.
"Alright. Let's see what we can come up with, then." |
John smiled.
"Sherlock is waiting for us," he said, leaning in to kiss her cheek. "I'm sure Charlotte is, too." |
Bree nodded, smiling and setting her tea down so she could take his hand instead. "Well, then, best not keep them waiting."
|
John squeezed her hand gently and walked with her out to where Sherlock was waiting.
"Ready when you are," he said to the dragon. |
Sherlock nodded and made sure they were both secure before he took them back up to the cave, letting them ahead of him so he could keep an eye on them.
|
John walked with Bree, not rushing. He knew how jumpy the dragons were likely to be, with a hatchling to protect.
Charlotte could hear and smell them all well before they came into view, but she didn't call out to Bree yet. The dragonet was still sleeping, curled up with her nose tucked under her tail. |
Bree smiled when she saw Charlotte. She couldn't see the little one yet, but she doubted she'd be able to for a little while.
"How is the little one?" |
"She is sleeping," Charlotte said quietly. One of her wings was draped down over her side, obscuring the little one and keeping her warm. "Though she will be hungry when she wakes."
|
"I'm sure. All newborns are." Bree smiled. "So you're going to send Sherlock off hunting."
Sherlock puffed at that, blowing a bit of (mostly) affectionate smoke at her. He'd rather grown to like her over the past few months. |
"Indeed," Charlotte said, amusement clear in her voice. "In the meantime, however... she needs a name." Carefully, she lifted her wing just enough so that Bree and John could see the little one. The hatchling's scales had dried, and were just as dark as Sherlock's, although some copper scales were scattered throughout the dark ones.
|
Bree aw'ed quietly at the little one. She was so cute and little.
"Hmm. Well, do you want a particular meaning, a letter, or just whatever sounds good?" |
"I am... unsure," Charlotte admitted. She had never needed a name for something so important before.
|
"Okay." Bree considered for a moment. "Well, let's set aside names that have extra meanings. For the moment, at least. We can focus on letters instead. So pick a letter and we'll see what we come up with, and if nothing fits quite right, we'll just keep going."
|
Charlotte hummed slightly, trying to hit upon a letter she particularly liked.
"What about a sound, instead?" John suggested after a moment. "'Charlotte' and 'Sherlock' both start with the same sound. Perhaps that?" |
"Works for me," Bree agreed with a little grin. "Sherry, Charlene, Cerise..."
Sherlock grumbled a bit at those names. So far, nothing he liked in particular. |
Charlotte didn't particularly like any of those, either.
"Her name must be as beautiful as she is," she said. "Perhaps start there instead?" "Alright, so you want something more," John said, thinking. "What about the names of queens? Elizabeth, Alexandra, Victoria..." |
"Alexandra is not bad," Sherlock offered cautiously, looking at Charlotte. "Or Victoria."
|
Charlotte nodded a bit.
"I rather like Alexandra," she agreed. |
"Alexandra, then?" Bree asked, looking between the two. Sherlock nodded his agreement, so they both looked at Charlotte for the final decision.
|
Charlotte nodded as well and looked down at the hatchling. The dragonet had slept through the entire discussion.
"Her name is Alexandra," she said. |
Bree smiled. "Excellent. Now she's even got a name."
Sherlock rumbled his agreement of that, settling down close to the nest again, eyes bright. |
"She will wake soon," Charlotte commented as she watched the hatchling shift in her sleep. "It will be a little while before she learns to speak."
