That made Violet pause.
"That's awesome," she said. Her sisters both looked around when Violet stopped, and also paused when they saw the mirrors. "Wow," Corinne said. |
"Thanks," Dahlia said, grinning and showing a little dimple. "I can do more." It was a subtle question to make sure no one was afraid or pissed off or anything.
"Really?" Holly asked, eyes bright.
"I made sure to put protections on everything before we started earlier," Maria offered. |
Dahlia smiled, dimpling again, and instead of answering she just started working. Ice frosted most of the floor, growing into stalagmites and forming crystalline structures. Dahlia even got a few stalactites on the ceiling to drip down in swirling patterns.
Violet just watched in awe, going to sit with her sisters. It really was impressive, and without formal spellwork, too.
Dahlia finished with a little flurry of ice-snow that drifted through the room and grinned.
"There, your rehearsal room has some new obstacles." |
"No kidding," Violet said, grinning. "Wow. Can everyone where you're from do that?"
"No, just me," Dahlia said with a shrug. "Well. My mother could. I don't know if my father could or not."
"Well, it's amazing," Violet said. Her breath fogged a bit in the cold, but she was still grinning.
"It lasts better at home," Dahlia said. "Home-home, I mean, not here. I could redecorate parts of the yard every few days."
"It's still damn impressive," Violet said. She reached out and carefully touched one of the formations.
"Thanks." Dahlia smiled and let them touch. It wouldn't hurt anyone, after all. They were just ice.
"Remind me never to get into a snowball fight with you," Violet said. "Or else, make sure I'm on your side."
"Good call," Dahlia said, her voice mild. But she was still smiling and relaxed.
Violet grinned.
"The snowball fight teams will be uneven again this year," she commented, glancing at Maria. The oldest sister grinned as well. "Nothing we're not used to," Maria replied. "We were uneven most years, until everyone was old enough to play." |
"We can give the extra person to whatever team I'm not on," Dahlia said. Because clearly this was going to happen.
Violet grinned.
"We'll give 'em Holly," she said teasingly. "Hey!" Holly said, giving Violet a shove. Violet laughed. |
Dahlia snickered and shook her head. It was nice to see the familial bickering.
"So, the twelve of us are all going to gather at Granny's for dinner tonight," Maria said as Violet, Corinne, and Holly all teased each other. "Care to join us?"
Dahlia hesitated for a moment before she nodded. "Sure, sounds fun." After all, what were the chances of Gold being there again? There shouldn't be a problem this time.
"Great," Maria said with a smile. "We're all heading over at six or so, just before the bulk of the dinner rush."
Dahlia nodded. "Sounds good," she agreed. "Should be entertaining."
"Oh I'm sure it will be," Maria said with a grin.
Dahlia nodded and started clearing out the ice and snow so the girls could actually move again.
By that point, Violet and the two youngest were having fun building miniature snowmen in the corner. Violet looked over when the frost on the mirror evaporated.
"Getting ready to head out?" she asked. |
