"Yes but not like that, and not up close and personal." Tony shrugged. "Normally it's Strange giving me hell."
Avery snorted.
"I don't deal with him, most of the time," she said. "We differ too much." |
"I can see that." Tony kept his voice dry, but he turned away finally to run some diagnostics on the arrow that had blown up on him.
Avery was quiet for a moment, watching him.
"Mind if I hang around and watch?" she asked finally. "It's kind of interesting." |
Tony flapped a hand at her that meant something like "sure, do what you want", and went back to work.
Avery settled in an out of the way spot to watch him work. It really was fascinating to watch, and she even understood most of the technical mumbling that came from him every so often.
Tony kept working, basically ignoring the extra person in his lab as he did, muttering to himself now and again. He got a few working prototypes for Clint to try later on, rubbing at his face briefly.
Avery was prepared for him to stop, and walked over with a mug of fresh coffee.
"Here," she said. "I figured you'd want some at some point." |
Tony blinked at that and motioned for her to set it on a decently clear patch of workspace. "Thanks," he muttered.
"No problem," Avery said. "Though all I really did was add fresh grounds to the machine, it did the rest. I'm actually kind of impressed with it, I kind of want one for my apartment."
"You don't have one?" Tony raised an eyebrow at her. "Figured with the way I've seen agents go through coffee they all have stashes of it everywhere."
"I have a basic coffee machine," Avery said, shrugging. "Very basic. Anything too high-tech tends to crash pretty quickly."
"Oh, right. Magic." Tony made a face. "Another reason I don't like magic, not that I can't work around that, mind you, I've had enough phones crash thanks to Strange that I work around magic now, my tech is too awesome to be disturbed by such trivial and freaky things as magic."
"Really," Avery said, skepticism clear in her tone. She'd believe it when she saw it.
"Look around. You were using magic, nothing here has crashed." Tony shrugged. "Actually, you know what, even better, long-term testing. Test this for me." He shoved a prototype phone at her. "Strange is never available when we need him, so I am going to make a cell that will last around him."
"It was very brief, very focused magic in a very magic-stripped environment," Avery pointed out. She blinked when the phone was tossed at her. "What do you want me to do with this?"
"Keep it on you all the time. See how it reacts to magic. Not in the tower." Tony drank the rest of his coffee and set the mug aside again for the moment.
Avery shrugged and put it into her pocket.
"Okay," she said. Easy enough, really. |
"Good. Jarvis, where's Clint?"
"At the range, sir." "Oh, good, let him know I've got those prototypes for him to try." Tony grinned, looking just a little maniacal. "Of course, sir. Shall I also alert security to set up the blast shields?" "Yes, fine, whatever." |
"I can reinforce the range, if you want," Avery offered. "Make things harder to destroy."
"We'll see how this session goes," Tony said, getting to his feet and grabbing the prototypes. He didn't tell her to go away, though, instead just heading for the range. He figured she'd follow, or not, as she wanted.
Avery followed, though she didn't offer again. She wanted to see what would happen down at the range, though, that promised to be entertaining.
Tony grinned a bit when he saw Clint making grabby hands at him. "What, you think you want these?" he asked, waving the arrows around teasingly.
"C'mon, Stark, quit playing around and gimme already," Clint said, definitely not whining.
Tony snickered but handed them over. "All yours," he said. "As promised. Try not to blow up anything unauthorized."
