Luke eyed the book a moment, "You speak Japanese?" he inquired
"Hai." She replied with a smile. "I'm a little rusty though. Thought I'd give myself a refresher."
"It's always a good idea to keep up on different languages" he agreed, "you never know when they'll come in handy."
"Especially when the language is much simpler... Compare to English, Japanese is a cake walk." She nodded as the warning bell went, "Well, I need to get to class... Thanks for checking up on me Luke."
"Hey, maybe we can hang out after class?" he asked.
"I have pracise tonight... Maybe we could hang out during lunch tomorrow?"
"Alright, I'll see you then" Luke agreed before letting her go to class at least.
Ciara zoomed down the hallway. Did... Did she just agree to a date?! O////o
'Stay calm. Stay calm.... you might start using your powers if you don't.' |
With one nearly in his grasp, Luke figured out which class was Victoria's and decidedly walked in on it and took a seat next to her. Somehow his name appeared on the attendance list.
Luke would soon learn to regret walking in on this class.
Each desk had a large creme coloured box on top a rectangular box which clicked and made noise. A somewhat flat rectangular box was in front of it. It has numerous buttons all with different things written on like Pause-Break, F5, Home, Alt, etc. Beside the flat box with all the buttons was a oval shaped device. When Luke entered the class, Victoria looked up and with a blank face watched him sit down beside her, there was about a foot in between her desk and his. She turned back to the strange box and thanked the teacher who was handing out booklets. "Follow the steps in your booklet for today's lesson. Anyone who did not finish yesterday's will have to finish that one first." The teacher said, "Begin." Victoria opened the booklet and her fingers flew across the rectangular box, clickclickclicktaptap... Her eyes focused on the work. |
Luke stared at the thing for several long minutes before finally raising his hand to the device and clicking a single button to see what would happen. This had been a bad idea.
The woman who was running the class seemed to appear behind Luke, "Does there seem to be a problem, Luke?" She asked, adjusting her glasses.
"Um... no, not at all" Luke replied, "I just... um, I might be a little behind. I just transferred"
She sighed, "You've never worked on a computer have you?" She asked, arms crossed loosely.
"... that's why there's a class for it?" Luke tried his most adorable smile.
"Yes however, being placed in ADVANCED computer class is ridiculous for only who has never worked a computer." She snapped her head to the side at some girls giggling, "Back to work!" She yelled at them.
She went to the desk at the front and pulled out a large blue binder, "Those guidance counselor should be shot.... putting kids in the wrong classes." She mumbled to herself before placing the binder in front of him. "Here. This is the beginner's course work. You will complete all assignments in this binder. Just follow the instructions and if you have any problems raise your hand." She explained, opening the binder to the first page which explained the different parts of the computer and how to turn it on. |
He took the work and began to read it. What was ridiculously complex device, and for what? Seriously, what was it for? All this information and it didn't even specify what the device did, how pointless. After a moment-when the teacher finally wasn't paying him much attention, Luke looked over to Victoria curiously, "Hello again" he greeted quietly.
Victoria paused in her typing but did not turn to look at him. "Hello." She replied, just as quiet he had spoken before her fingers began to finish the line of text she'd been working on and clicked the print button. A machine near them started to click and clack.
She got up and ripped off the sheets attached to the printer and opened her binder to attach the pages. She made as little eye contact with him as she got up and returned to her desk as possible, without looking down. She sighed, reached over and double clicked an icon. "First assignment is to play the Yukon Trail and to record your game results and what you learned. You'll need to put the headphones on to hear their voices." She said before returning to her work. |
He watched for a moment and smiled a little, "alright... how do I play this yukon trail?" He asked.
Victoria inhaled slowly before turning back to him. He really had NO IDEA how to use a computer. Where on earth had this kid grown up where he hadn't used a computer before?
" It's a simulation of what it might have been like in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897. Your goal is to high it big in the Klondike." She picked up the headphones and placed them on his head. "You use the mouse to interact with objects and people with the cursor." She pointed at the mouse and the cursor on the screen. Left click to talk to people etc. You'll need to pick a partner, supplies and buy a boat before you leave Dawson City. The game kinda explains as you go along." She sat back and started typing again. |
He tried to play the game.
Luke only managed to make it part way up the trail. He broke his leg several times and gambled all of his money away and had run out of supplies. Apparently wool socks were important.
As the class went on, Victoria's eyes darted Luke's direction several times. What was with this guy? Why couldn't see stop looking at him? And her heart was beating like a drum... |
Luke rested his cheek on his hand as he toyed around with the game. It was mildly amusing but it would be better if he could kill people who annoyed him and it was so easy to break a leg. Fragile mortals couldn't handle anything. Finally the bell rang and he blinked out of the stupor his mind had settled into. "huh?"
The bell rang and Victoria never released how quickly she could move. She was the first to leave the room.
"Miss President." Zoe was waiting for her. "Here is the checklist you asked for." Good, something to take her mind off of the new kid. She did NOT have a crush. "Perfect. Update on the decorations." "The art club should be finished making them today after school." Zoe informed her. "Any meetings after school?" "There's a counsel meeting and then the yearbook club would like you to overlook their designs." "Very good." |
Luke looked over in time to see Victoria bolt from class. A touch of a smile perched on his lips he got up and strolled out, at some point his appearance changing to a slightly taller boy with dark brown hair as he went in search of Polly.
