Steve smiled at that, settling in with her.
But the next day he got up early, packing up his things and pulling out a bag so she could get packed up as well. Liz woke when Bucky started moving around, groaning a little. |
Taylor packed what she could, and was ready to go quickly.
"Ready when you are," she said. Bucky was making breakfast in the little kitchen. Coffee was already brewing, because he'd reached the point that it was necessary, and he was frying up some eggs and making toast to go with it. |
Steve nodded and opened the door for her, though he let her shut and lock it.
"Stay close to me," he told her. "Morning," Liz said, blinking a few times and getting up carefully. "Smells good." She made her way into the little kitchen. |
Hillary nodded and locked the door once they were both out.
"I'll follow you," she said to him. "Help yourself," Bucky said, pointing to a package of paper plates and a box of plastic forks. A sleeve of paper coffee cups sat next to the machine." |
Steve nodded and walked with her out of the building and down into the subway. He took a slightly more convoluted route to the tower than was necessary, but he was being careful. And even then, he got off a stop before the tower, and walked with her the rest of the way, blending in with the crowd and bustle easily.
"Natasha again?" Liz asked, getting food and coffee before settling down to eat. |
Hillary stayed close to him, a bit of anxiety rising when they were in the crowd. She was never easy when she was in the middle of a crowd, and she stepped as close to Steve as she could without tripping him.
"No," Bucky said. "She only came the once. This is what's left." Which meant that they would either have to leave within the day, or he'd have to call Nat again, and that was a bit dangerous. |
Steve herded her in a smaller side entrance to the tower and straight into the elevator waiting there for them. Then he relaxed a little.
Liz nodded. "Alright." She paused a moment, putting some of her eggs on her toast. "I have a safe place or two squirreled away," she offered. "If we need." |
Hillary relaxed a little once Steve did.
"Are we a bit safer now?" she asked him, leaning against him a little. "Once you're healed enough for us to leave, there's another place waiting," Bucky said, taking his own plate and sitting down. |
"Yes," Steve said. "Probably one of the safest buildings in the world." He smiled a bit when the elevator stopped on his floor and he got out, giving her time to look around.
"I can head out whenever you're ready," Liz said. "Really. You can check after we've eaten." Because she knew he'd want to see the wounds--which were basically healed, just some tight, puckered skin left--for himself. |
Hillary stepped out of the elevator and indeed look around in awe.
"This place is amazing," she said. She looked at him. "Are you sure it's alright for me to be here?" Bucky nodded. "I will," he said. Once he was sure she was healed sufficiently, they would leave. |
"Yes," Steve said. "This is my apartment in the tower. You're welcome here anytime you want, as long as you want."
Liz nodded and finished her breakfast quietly, tossing the trash. She waited for him to finish before she moved in front of him and turned her back so he could check the wounds. |
"And it won't bother anyone else?" Hillary pressed. She knew very well that some people refused to tolerate mutants.
Bucky carefully probed the marks on her back. They weren't inflamed or infected, and they looked mostly healed, so he nodded. "Let's go, then," he said. |
"You've already met the team, and Tony was the one who suggested you stay here," Steve said with a shrug. "No one minds."
Liz nodded and gathered up her few things, motioning for him to lead the way. She did more actively engage her Extremis as they left the building, though. |
"I just wanted to be sure," Hillary said. Regardless, she stayed close to Steve for the moment.
Bucky made sure the area was clear before he let Liz follow him. Their path back to the tower was convoluted, but he managed to make sure nobody was following them. |
"It's fine. Go ahead and get comfy. The others will knock if they want in." Steve grinned a bit. "We don't normally barge into each others' rooms."
Liz was hyperattentive the whole time, looking around subtly and noting how many times they switched back and forth, and approving of it. By the time they did get to the tower, however, her fingers were twitching from Extremis riled up with nothing to do. |
"Alright," Hillary said. She set her bag down near his closet, and then went to go sit on the bed. It was a surprisingly firm bed, but it was comfortable enough. She sighed a bit and a few more scales appeared on her arms and legs as she relaxed.
"Inside," Bucky murmured as he opened a side door to the tower and ushered her in. He knew there was a service elevator back there that went up to the lowest of the living floors. |
Steve quirked a bit of a grin at that. "Jarvis, let the others know we're here and we're going to settle in, if they need anything," he said.
"Of course, sir." Liz slid inside and headed straight to the elevator, glancing back at him. "Really? We're staying here now?" Because of course she recognized the building. Everyone in New York recognized the building. |
Hillary just smiled at that a bit. Settling in with Steve sounded wonderful. Leaning back, she stretched out on the huge bed.
"It's the safest place anywhere around here," Bucky said as the elevator closed. He relaxed a bit once it started moving. |
Steve went to go make some coffee first, looking over at her. "Want some? Or anything to eat?"
"Uh huh." Liz looked around rather warily, though she knew he wouldn't put her in harms way. |
"I could use something to eat," Hillary said, nodding. "I haven't had anything in a few days, I'm getting hungry again."
"Come on," Bucky said as the elevator stopped. "We still need to go up about six more floors. But we're safe here." |
"I can't really cook too much, but I have food here, or I can go see what's up in the main kitchen, or I can order something," Steve offered, looking at her.
"Up more?" Liz raised her eyebrows but followed him. |
"Whatever is easier for you," Hillary said. "Just... meat?" She looked at him hopefully.
"A few," Bucky said, nodding. "To my floor." |
"Sure, I can do that." Steve pulled a tablet out of a drawer and tapped in a few commands. "How do you want it cooked?"
"Your floor?" Liz's eyebrows shot up at that. "The hell have I been missing?" |
"Not very," Hillary said almost immediately. She always craved meat after a shed, as rare as she could get it.
Bucky made a bit of a face. "Don't ask me, they dragged me here and the next thing I knew, Stark as throwing a suite at me and I didn't have a chance to refuse," he said. |
Steve nodded and made note of that. "Twenty minutes," he told her, setting the tablet down again. "If that's okay."
Liz snickered a bit at that and cautiously stepped out on his floor, glancing around but not going around without permission. |
