Martha stayed quiet not wanting to drawl attention to herself. At lunch she sat with Cal blinking when a red haired girl danced over to them. "Lily." Martha greeted Poison Ivy's child. "I'm Artemis Isley here." the girl grinned sitting across from them. "Oh...nice to meet you Artemis." Martha grinned at the girl.
|
Cal watched the exchange. He knew Ivy's daughter from various villain meet ups that his father had brought them to. "N-nice to meet you." He said shyly. April was better friends with Lilly than he was.
At that moment, April came running over, dragging a boy with her. "Guys, look who I met! Oh, hi Artemis. It's good to see you." Behind her, the boy cleared his throat. "Oh right. Everyone, this is Enoch Nygma. His dad is...someone our parents know." She giggled. Enoch waved. "Hey. What's up." He said casually. |
"Your Riddlers kids...try to be different." Martha sighed. "If its that obvious to us imagine what other people will think." she rolled her eyes a little.
|
Enoch sighed. "Hey, I didn't choose my name. But I did choose not to use a fake name. My old man likes puzzles and tryin' to be mysterious, but I'd rather be straightforward. If people talk, let 'em talk. I don't care." He said with a shrug.
Cal stared at the boy, admiring how he could be so confident. He could never be like that, he thought. "U-um...if you Don mind my asking...d-does your name have some special meaning? April raised her hand, even though she didn't have to. "I know, I know! Enoch is a name from the Bible. It's the name of Noah's great-grandfather who lived to be reeeeeealy old, but it's also the name of Cain's firstborn son. Pretty appropriate for a villain's son." She said. "Yeah, that was the idea. Well, that and he wanted a name that started wit E like his, so that I could be listed as E. Nygma. I hate it." Enoch said. |
Martha blinked. "At least it's interesting." she tried to comfort him.
"Better then being named after a nonpoisonous flower." Artemis smirked a little. |
April giggled. "Or having a really generic month name like mine." She said.
"Yeah, I guess. But hey, what's your name, anyway?" He asked Cal. Cal looked down. He liked his name. "My name's Calcifer. Cal." He said. "Our mom named me after a character in her favorite movie." |
"Our parents are strange." Martha sighed. "True that...who are you named after?" Artemis asked. "My dead grandmother...she was shot when my dad was seven." She knew the story by heart since her mom had made sure she knew who her grandparents had been.
|
"Wow, that stinks. So wait...that makes you Martha Wayne right? I'm guessing you don't want people to know that." Enoch asked.
"I-I think being named after someone so important is neat." Cal chipped in. April rolled her eyes. "You think everything about Martha is neat." She said. |
Martha elbowed April. "Well if they know its fine. I just don't want to be treated differently."
|
"Then you should probably make friends with them before you tell them who you are. That way they have no choice but to accept you."
April yelped slightly and pouted at Martha, but didn't say anything. "Martha is a good person, so making friends shouldn't be hard." Cal said. |
"I'll give that a try." Martha smiled. "Hey you already have me as a friend." Artemis chirped smiling brightly. Martha looked surprised then smiled back.
|
Cal also smiled. So far, their first day was going pretty well.
"And we're your friends, too." April chirped happily. Enoch shrugged. "It's really too soon to say for me, but I'll probably be your friend as long as you don't hold my father's reputation against me." |
"So long as you don't ask riddles you got yourself a deal." Martha smiled at him.
|
"Deal. I'm more of a jigsaw puzzle kind of guy, anyway." Enoch said jokingly.
"Jigsaw puzzles? Well, whatever floats your boat." April said with a shrug. Cal chuckled. "Personally, I like crossword puzzles. More of a mental challenge." He said. |
Martha and Artemis rolled there eyes. Martha grinned a little it felt nice to get along with people even if they where the children of bad guys.
|
"I don't suppose anyone wants to trade something for my apple? I don't know why Mom packed this..." April asked suddenly.
"Dad packed the lunches." Cal said by way of explanation. He held up a bag of gummy worms- which he hated- to prove it. Enoch started laughing. "Wait a sec, hold on. It looks like he did that on purpose." He said, earning confused looks all around. "Think about it. Your dad either got the two of you confused- difficult, since you don't even look alike- or he wanted you to do something with those items." He waited for someone to catch on. "I wouldn't overestimate our dad. But...you're right. He didn't get us confused, because neither of us likes this stuff. An apple and gummy worms..." Cal smacked his forehead. "The worm in the apple trick. Ugh, that's awful..." April groaned, shaking her head. "You'd think he'd come up with a better joke for our first day. Then again, it's our dad..." "Who are you parents, anyway?" Enoch asked, feeling like he could probably figure out their father at least. He was greeted with silence and shaking heads from both twins. |
Martha hide her smirk behind her hand glad her parents didn't try to persuade her to do acts of good. "It could be worse. He could have done poisonous apples."
|
"Who? Come on, I won't tell." Enoch begged.
"Yeah, you're right." Cal said to Martha. "Don't you dare." he warned April, who looked tempted to answer. "We're not supposed to tell." "Oh come on, they're gonna find out eventually. If other villains kids aren't hiding it, why should we?" April asked. "They are hiding it, dummy." "Not from each other, stupid." "If you don't tell, someone might guess and blurt it out. How about a little trust?" "Trust, huh? Tough, considering who your parents are. But...we of all people know that you can't judge someone based on their parents." Cal sighed. "Okay, fine, tell him. But not now, after school okay?" April clapped. "Yay! I knew you'd come around! So let's all meet after school and we can talk." She said. |
Martha watched them wishing she could argue with Damien like that but he always just smiled and said she was right.
|
Shortly after that, lunch was over and the lessons resumed. Later that day, after school was over...
Cal stood with April outside of school, waiting for the others to show up. "So, we're agreed, right?" April nodded. "We'll tell them, but only after we make sure they won't say anything." "Say something about what?" Enoch asked as he approached. |
Martha skipped over looking happy. Artemis followed her glancing around as if looking for someone.
|
"Oh good, you're all here. Artemis, are you waiting for someone?" April asked.
"If you are, they should get here soon. We're only going to do this once." Cal pitched in. "Do what? Are we about to take some sort of sacred oath or something?" Enoch asked. |
"My mom said she would pick me up... I'm worried how she's going to do it." Artemis sighed and turned to them. "What is it you want to tell me?"
|
"We're gonna tell you who our dad is." Cal said.
"But since we're supposed to keep it a secret, we have to swear you guys to secrecy, too." April added. "Basically, we're asking you to make a blood promise." Enoch held up his hands. "Woah, wait. A blood promise? As in, actual blood?" He asked. April nodded. "Yes. Don't worry, we know what we're doing. We were gonna do this with Martha soon, anyway. See, what we do is pick our fingers and press the fingerprint to a symbolic object to signify our promise." "I think we should just make a club of hero's and villain's kids and use the blood promise as initiation, like the members promising to stick together and stuff." Cal said. "Actually...I like that club idea. I mean, it's something we all have in common that might make it hard to be around regular kids. Why not just make a club and promise that we'll all be friends? And part of that promise can be keeping each other's secrets. I'm in." |
"What about when we choose what side we take? I know my parents won't pressure me into either one but your dad is hoping one of you will turn to the dark side." Martha sighed. "We have to agree that friendship won't get in the way of taking someone down."
