April's jaw dropped. "Martha...Martha, no. That's not what I meant. I meant he likes you. As in, wants-to-be-your-boyfriend likes you." She said, making it painfully clear.
|
Martha stared at her the laughed. "Your joking right?" she shook her head. "There's no way Cal likes me like that I'm like another sister." she grimaced at the idea. "He shouldn't get so involved with someone that it make's him decide." she snorted.
|
April scowled. "Does it look like I'm kidding?! Why would I tell you something like this if it wasn't true? Martha, I'm trying to tell you that Cal is hurting! You need to know so you can tell him for certain that you'll never feel that way about him. He needs to hear it from you, or part of him will always hope. You do care about him, don't you? As a friend, you need to help him get over this. No one else can."
|
"Your right. I don't think I'll ever feel that way about him." Martha sighed and went to find Cal. "You come with me." she pulled him into the hallway. "April told me you like me...I'm sorry Cal but I don't feel for any thing more the a brother."
|
Cal blinked. "Oh...okay. I understand. Thanks for being honest, Mari. I appreciate it." He said honestly. Mentally, he made a note to kill April.
|
"Now that, that's settled." Martha walked off still upset that he would turn to the dark side. She couldn't believe he had liked her it made her feel weird a bad kind of weird like what she would feel if Damien said he liked her, liked her.
|
Cal walked off to find April. The two of them disappeared long enough that the adults started to worry. When they came back, though, everything seemed fine.
|
"Where were you two?" Martha demanded. "I was worried." She pouted at them.
|
"Nowhere." Cal said calmly. "Just wandering around, really."
April, who looked slightly upset, nodded. "Yeah, just talking and stuff." |
Martha pouted and hugged April. "Your my partner in crime so tell me anything you want to. You I won't be talking to." she glared at Cal. "Your the enemy know." she nodded with all the force and knowledge of a twelve year old raised by Bruce.
|
Cal shrugged, giving her a look she never would have thought he was capable of. "I know that. That's the point." He said coldly, walking away.
April flinched. "Why'd you tell him I told you? I never knew Cal could be so...mean. I'm kinda worried about him..." She said. Her brother was the gentle one, usually. |
"Well it's not like I would have figured it out over night." Martha shrugged. "I don't know maybe he's just made because I said I don't like him the way he thought I would or this is just how he is."
|
April shook her head. "C'mon, you know Cal as well as I do. That's not who he is. He's not acting right." She said. "He'd never get mad at you for not liking him back. And he's never, ever hit me before..." She admitted the last part in a whisper.
|
"HE WHAT!?" Martha screamed and marched after Cal fuming. "How dare you?!" She glared at him. "You ought to be ashamed of yourself. Even Joker's not that much of a bastard!" "Martha!" Lori gasped at her daughter who ignored her.
|
April ran after her. "Martha, no! Don't make a scene!" But of course it was too late for that.
Cal looked at her emotionlessly. "Why am I being yelled at?" He asked. |
"You damn well know while Calcifer. How dare you hit your sister?" Martha huffed.
"You what?!" Joker choked on the sip of water he had taken. "You never hit girls. Ever. What has gotten into you young man?" |
Gemini gasped. "Calcifer! How could you?"
Cal crossed his arms and glared at April. "I barely touched her. It's not that big a deal." He said. "Cal, you're not acting like yourself..." April tried. "How would you know?!" Cal rounded on her. "How do you know this isn't really who I am? You don't know me at all. None of you do!" "Calcifer, don't you dare yell at your sister!" Gemini went to grab his arm, but backed away with a gasp. Her hand was bleeding. "Stay away from me! Just leave me alone!" Cal yelled, running away. "Cal, wait!" Bruce called, but the boy was gone. "What just happened?" |
"No idea." Lori blinked at Joker who shook his head. "For once you actually can't blame me." He grimaced. "I'll go find him." He hurried off. Martha huffed and crossed her arms "maybe he's just showing his true colors. Wouldn't be the first thing he's hidden."
|
"That's not fair, Martha. He was just too shy to tell you how he felt. We can't assume he's hiding things just from that." Gemini said, wrapping her bleeding hand.
April started crying. "Martha, we're supposed to be friends. We all made a promise, remember? You've gotta know something's wrong. Cal's supposed to be the good one!" She sobbed. Everything was wrong. "We can only hope Joker can find him and find out what's going on. You girls don't get any ideas to find him yourself, got it? It's not safe." Bruce said, looking at April specifically. |
"Well he may not be. We all thought he would choose good and that didn't happen." Martha said grumpily.
Joker meanwhile was searching the town for his son. |
April sobbed harder. "I knew this would happen someday! We're all gonna stop being friends now..."
Cal had gone back home, and was hiding up on the roof. |
Martha glanced at her. "No April. You and I will never stop being friends but Cal's a villain so it's difficult." She looked at her father for help.
"Of course your the last place I look." Joker sighed joining Cal on the roof. "What's the problem? And don't give that this is who you really are speech." |
Bruce, caught by surprise, held his hands up. "It is difficult...to be friends with someone on opposite sides. But it's not impossible. If it was, you wouldn't be here, Martha. But what's really important in that situation is whether both sides want to be friends." He said. Right then, he wasn't sure Cal did want to be friends, and that worried him.
Cal glanced up as his father approached, and instantly moved farther away from him. "Don't come near me." He said, trying to look tough. He only managed to look scared, however. |
"hey there is nothing you can do to me that hasn't already been done." Joker reached forward and gentle pulled him into a hug. "Tell me what's wrong."
|
"No!" Cal scrunched into himself, trying to stay away, but it was too late. As soon as his father touched him, an unseen force whipped out and slashed at him with what felt like claws. "No, no, no, no, no.......I told you! Stay away!"
