"I don't know it's all a blur." Lori shivered and took a deep breath she knew she was hurt but she pulled him to her crushing him into a tight hug.
Bruce hugged her back gently, relieved she was alright. "I should have gone with you. I'm so sorry." He said.
Outside the room, Gemini looked at Martha. "Where's Cal?" She asked suddenly, realizing he wasn't there. |
"He didn't want to come with...I wasn't really paying attention." Martha admitted.
"no it's alright our daughter needed you.' Lori cling to him tighter. "I was scared that you wouldn't be able to find me." |
Gemini shook her head. "No, that's alright. You were worried about your mom. Just..." She sighed. "Listen, I'm worried about Cal. I can't ask April to watch him, he'll know about it. Can you keep an eye on him, at school and such? Just...let me know if anything strange happens?"
"I'll always find you, Lori, no matter what." Bruce said, squeezing her hand gently. "Cal and Martha did a great job helping. They did most of the work, even." |
"Alright I guess." Martha sighed looking over to her mom smiling a little. "Where they always like that?"
"I know...they had a good teacher." Lori smiled at him then a the morphine kicked in she fell asleep holding his hand. |
"Thanks." Gemini smiled a little. "More or less, though there used to be more chasing and arresting." She said.
Bruce leaned down and kissed Lori's head, deciding to stay with her while she slept. |
"Why are they so in love. Mom usually just shrugs and says that she just does and that it's hard to explain dad just gets embarrassed." Martha chuckled.
Gemini smiled. "It really is hard to explain. You don't choose to fall in love, it just...happens. Whether you want it to or not. It's a powerful thing." She chuckled. "Trust me, I didn't want to fall in love with the most terrifying clown on the planet. When I realized what I felt, I tried everything I could to stop feeling that way." She shook her head and looked at Martha. "You'll understand someday."
"And if I don't?" Martha sighed a little she wasn't sure she could find a regular guy she would be able to share her secret world with. "Why does Cal like me?"
"I'm sure you will." Gemini said. Hearing the girl's question, she shrugged. "I really don't know. He's always liked you, Martha. I mean, I can understand why a boy would like you- you're smart, attractive, funny and talented- but like I said, we can't choose love, it chooses us. I think Cal was taken with you from a very young age, and those feelings naturally grew into what they are now."
"But...how is it me? I mean I'm like his sister." Martha sighed a little shifting a little.
"I'm not sure I'm the one to explain that." Gemini said. "I've heard of people who fall in love with a childhood friend, but since it never happened to me, I can't understand it much myself. The only thing I can think is that maybe Cal never saw you as a sister."
"I don't understand but mom keeps saying I will one day." Martha sighed and grimaced. "I feel so stupid for not noticing he liked me for all these years.
"You shouldn't feel too bad about that." Gemini reassured the girl. "When you grow up so close, and think of someone as a sibling, it's only natural that you think they feel the same." She said.
"Thanks aunty Gemini." Martha looked at her parents. "Looks like I'll need a place to crash for the night." She knew her father wouldn't leave her mother's side.
"Don't mention it, dear. You know you're welcome at our place if you want." Gemini said.
"Yeah." Martha smiled and followed her leaving her dad a note. "As sweet as there love is when they get to into each other they half forget I'm there." She chuckled. "Is that normal?"
"Oh, yeah, for two people who love each other so much, that's totally normal." Gemini answered, chuckling a little. "Although, your parents tend to take it even further sometimes." She said, leading the way back to her house.
"What do you mean?" Martha frowned then blushed. "You aren't talking about the birds and the Bee Gees are you?"
Gemini simply smiled. "I don't know what you're talking about. Ah, here we are." She came up to her door and opened it, letting Martha in.
Up on the roof, Cal had watched his mother and Martha arrive. He didn't bother to go down and greet them. Having waited up, April jumped to her feet. "Mom! Martha! What happened? Is aunt Lori okay? I couldn't sense her anymore and I got so scared, then Cal came back all upset and..." She stopped, realizing that she had just said she "sensed" Lori. "I'm starting to think...my powers are psychic..." She sat back down. |
Martha blinked. "Just promise to stay out of my thoughts." She smiled. "Moms beaten up but her knight is by her side so she'll be fine she has at least four lives left."
April managed a smile at that. "That's good to hear. And don't worry, I don't think I can read minds- well, except for Cal's. I just kind of...sense things. Are you staying with us tonight?" She asked, attempting to change the subject.
"Yeah the house is empty." Martha sighed. "Damien's on a mission, Alfred gone and so is Ace." She missed the two of them deeply.
"Where did Alfred and Ace go?" April asked. In all her twelve years, she had known the two to leave the mansion grounds perhaps twice.
Letting the girls talk, Gemini slipped away back to bed, doing her best not to wake Joker as she did. |
"Well." Martha shifted her gaze to the floor. "Ace had to go to the vets. He's getting old and sickly." she rubbed the tears on her face. "He may not last much longer."
