"Really?" Taylor asked. "No way. I always thought that was just some bullshit they made up for the persona. It really is your birthday?"
"It really is." Steve grinned. "My Ma always said it was 'cause I was born here, she thought it was a good sign."
"And look at you now," Taylor said, half-teasing.
Steve shrugged. "This wasn't so much good luck as determination and science," he said, making a vague motion at himself.
"They were lucky to find you," Taylor pointed out. She smiled a bit. "So it all worked out."
"I guess so," Steve said with a bit of a shrug. He knew that if it could only work once, Erskine would be glad it was him. But he still missed the doctor, sometimes.
Taylor nudged him a bit.
"Trust me, people will be glad it's you, when the aliens come," she said. She grinned, to imply she was teasing, even though she knew it was the truth. |
Steve snorted at that. "Uh huh, sure," he said with a little grin. "I'll remember that." He shook his head, because he'd believe a lot, but aliens? Nope.
Taylor couldn't help it, she laughed. He was actually fun to hang out with, when they got a chance.
Steve grinned. He kind of liked it when she laughed, it was pleasant. "So, on the topic of birthdays, what about flowers? What kinds of flowers do you like?"
"Flowers?" Taylor had to think about that for a moment. "I don't think I have a particular favorite. Lilies, maybe."
"What, no one's ever brought you flowers?" Steve asked, raising his eyebrows.
"...No?" Taylor said, a bit confused. "Why?"
"I'm going to fix that," Steve said in no uncertain tone. "As soon as I can." Because every dame deserved to have someone give her flowers once in a while.
Taylor blinked.
"You know you don't have to," she said cautiously. "Really, I promise, I'm used to not being given flowers, it's not like I've got anyone to give them to me in the first place. I mean, not counting my parents, I guess, but there's no reason to get any from them." |
Steve shook his head. "Every dame deserves flowers," he said stubbornly. "At least once in a while, so that she knows someone cares."
"I promise, you have no obligation to do that," Taylor said. "It's not like that in 2014, really, people don't give flowers for no reason anymore." Then she paused, really absorbing what he said, and she turned a bit pink. "Wait, you care about me?"
Steve smiled a little and blushed a little himself, side-stepping the question. "I don't think I like that aspect of 2014. I think I'll just ignore that."
"You're going to make some girl really happy someday," Taylor commented with a bit of a grin. "Flowers just because? Next you'll be telling me that you'll take her out for dinner and dancing all the time."
"Dinner, yes. Dancing, well, maybe." Steve shrugged. "I never could dance, before. Two left feet. Hasn't been much time for dancing recently."
"Bet you'd be good at it now," Taylor said, grinning a bit. "Improved balance and all that, right?"
"Hypothetically," Steve hedged. "Doesn't mean I have any sense of rhythm or anything. I haven't tried. Haven't had time."
Taylor grinned a bit.
"You could learn," she pointed out. "All you need is a decent partner and somewhere to practice." |
"And music," Steve said, but he nodded. "I know. Bucky keeps trying to get me to dance. He doesn't get it, dancing's always come natural to him."
"Well, you should try," Taylor said. She smiled a bit, turning a little pink. "I bet you'd be good at it now."
