"Stark works with machines," Bucky said suddenly. "But I can't ask him to look at the arm." He wasn't sure why he was telling her this, but it felt okay,
"Why not?" Kenzie asked, frowning. It seemed to her that Stark would be the perfect choice to look at the arm, if he worked with machines.
Bucky was quiet for a moment.
"There was a mission to take out a high profile target," he admitted. "Supposed to make it look like an accident. I completed the mission without a problem." He hesitated. "The target was Howard Stark." |
Kenzie processed that before she nodded, looking at him. "Does he know that?" she asked quietly. Because she could guess that was a big part of the reason why he felt he couldn't go to Stark.
"I haven't told him," Bucky replied. Whether or not Stark knew anyway was another story.
Kenzie nodded. That she understood. "Hmm." She looked at his arm again, gently running her fingers along the plates on his palm. "Well, if it still works well enough for now..." She let the sentence trail off.
"It does," Bucky said. Of course, he wasn't likely to speak up if it didn't; he'd likely just try to fix it himself. But nobody had to know that.
Kenzie nodded and settled in there again.
"What do you do with your time off?" she asked, tilting her head a little. |
Bucky shrugged a bit.
"Not much," he said. "Not used to time off. Steve keeps trying to take me places." |
Kenzie snorted quietly at that.
"Well, if you'd like, you can use me as an excuse to get away," she offered. "Come spend time here. We don't even have to stay in the shop, we can go upstairs when Gemma's here." |
Bucky was quiet for a moment.
"She doesn't like me much, does she?" he asked. It was kind of obvious, at least to him, so he wasn't sure what other people might have noticed. |
Kenzie blinked, but instead of trying to comfort him straight off, she gave the question serious consideration.
"I don't think she dislikes you," she said slowly. "Gemma... Gemma has been the only one in my hoard for a while. The others had died, or left, before her, and you are the first I have acquired since her. For a long time it has been just the two of us. I think she is used to that, and I think she is still adapting to the changes I forced upon her rather suddenly." Her lips turned down in displeasure. "I have not been very thoughtful towards her feelings on this." |
Bucky shrugged a bit.
"You're a dragon," he said, as if that explained everything. Which, to him, it kind of did. One couldn't expect dragons to know all the intricacies of humans. |
"I am, but I have been here a long time. I should know better. Especially with Gemma." Kenzie frowned a bit, because she did feel bad about just kind of towing Gemma along with her into this. But on the other hand, she had been warned.
"I think I can deal with her not liking me," Bucky said. "It's not like we have to live together or anything." As far as he was concerned, they didn't have to interact with each other if they didn't want to.
Kenzie nodded slowly, though she was still pouting a bit. Because she wanted her hoard to get along, if not actually like each other.
Bucky sat there with her. He blinked when he glanced at her.
"Are you pouting?" he asked. |
"No!" Kenzie immediately denied, which only caused more pouting. "I am a dragon. I do not pout."
"You were pouting," Bucky said, grinning. "You definitely were."
"I do not pout," Kenzie repeated, though she was slowly relaxing. He had a nice grin, after all.
"If you say so," Bucky replied, still grinning. He resettled himself in his seat a bit.
Kenzie didn't let go of his hand, instead relaxing into a smile. She leaned back a bit and just relaxed there.
Gemma came back a little while later, pulling a repurposed craft box on wheels behind her. She paused when she saw Bucky in the shop, and then just headed upstairs, nodding to Kenzie in passing.
Kenzie nodded in return and watched her go before she sighed, going back to dejected. Yup, she should really talk to Gemma about this.
Bucky nudged her shoulder with his a bit. He wasn't sure why, but he thought it was the right sort of comforting gesture for the moment.
