Kenzie did indeed pay for coffees and settled in next to Gemma, smiling a little.
"How much do you believe exists in the world? Apart from Asgardians and Svartalfir." Best to see how much of an introduction she'd have to make. Sam and Steve exchanged looks. "A lot," Sam said with a bit of a snort. |
"Whatever you think is out there, move it all over and make room for one more thing," Gemma said as she stirred her coffee.
Bucky raised an eyebrow, but didn't verbally ask for elaboration. |
"Dragons." Kenzie watched them, because this was usually the best part.
"Dragons?" Sam echoed, frowning. "Not the weirdest thing I've been told to believe in," Steve said with a bit of a snort. |
"Dragons?" Bucky murmured. He considered it for a moment before nodding. If he could accept aliens and mind-control, he could accept dragons.
"Dragons in this context also referring to Kenzie," Gemma added. |
Kenzie grinned and twiddled her fingers at them.
"You don't look much like a dragon," Sam said cautiously. "You don't know much about dragons." Kenzie smiled, and consciously shifted her eye color to her natural gold. "I don't always have scales." |
"Why Barnes, then?" Sam pressed. Because that was the next most pressing thing on his mind. "What did you do, anyways?"
|
Kenzie shrugged. "Dragons collect hoards," she said. "Each dragon picks something to board. I pick people."
Steve blinked, and Sam got it a little faster, his eyes going wide and his lips twitching. "Did you just hoard Barnes?" He asked incredulously. "Yes." |
Bucky gave her a bit of a sideways look at that.
"You had your pick," he finally spoke up, "and you picked me? Why?" |
Kenzie looked at him, tilting her head a little. "Why not?" she asked. "You are special, in your own right. I would not have picked someone I did not want to."
|
Bucky's expression immediately flattened out at that. It wasn't the first time he'd been told he was chosen because he was special. His left arm was proof enough of that.
|
Kenzie blinked at that. "Special is not bad," she pointed out. "Do you not live with a group of special people?" She shrugged. "Something about you told me to pick you first. It is hard to describe in human terms."
|
"I was... special," Bucky said quietly, looking down at his metal hand for a moment. He flexed the fingers. "Favored."
|
Kenzie nodded. "But that is not something you have to worry about now, is it not?" she asked gently. "Besides, as Gemma will tell you, being special to me rarely comes with anything unusual. Except occasional gifts."
|
Bucky blinked at that and gave her something of a blank look.
"Gifts?" he asked. The word had no place in the Winter Soldier's vocabulary. He studied her for a moment. "What's my m--" He stopped and shook his head a bit. "No. That's not right. Sorry." |
"Not your fault," Kenzie said with a shrug. "You're taking this better than I expected." She grinned. "Gemma refused to believe me, and then was in denial for almost a week." She did pull out a worthless little pretty bauble to play with while she spoke, though, watching Bucky. Because he definitely needed some time to really accept this, and she was willing to give him time.
|
Gemma could see the other two getting a bit tense as Bucky's demeanor changed, and she touched Kenzie's arm.
"Maybe we should give him some time to get used to the idea," she suggested. She dug around in her bag for a business card for her shop and slid it over to Steve and Sam. "This is the best place to find us if you have any questions, okay?" |
Steve nodded, taking the card. "Alright. Thank you."
Kenzie smiled a bit and set the bauble on the table in front of Bucky. It was a roughly cut smoky quartz, not worth much, but pretty. "For you," she said before she stood, picking up her coffee so she and Gemma could get back to the shop. Sam blinked and watched the two go, because this might even top the scale of weirdness. |
Slowly, as though he wasn't even sure what he was doing, Bucky reached out and picked up the rough crystal. He turned it over in his hands, examining it.
"So you really want him?" Gemma asked as they left the cafe. |
Sam and Steve both looked at him for a minute before looking at each other.
"So what the hell really just happened?" Sam asked. "Yes," Kenzie said firmly. "I do." She huffed. "I don't believe that's all there is to him. Besides, this one I cannot ignore. You saw how I got when they were fighting." |
"Got me," Steve replied, just as baffled. "Are we really going to believe what they said about dragons?"
"He's fragile," Gemma warned. "Even I could see that. You'll need to be careful with him until he gets a bit stronger." |
"I don't know," Sam said with a frown. "We don't have any real proof. Although I suppose we could ask Thor, maybe."
"I know," Kenzie said quietly. "But he will improve with time. Besides, I doubt that I will get to see him very much at the moment. It will take longer for them to believe me and trust me." |
Steve raised an eyebrow.
"Clint is convinced Thor says half the things he does just to mess with us mere mortals," he pointed out. "True," Gemma agreed. "I hope they stop by the store at some point though." |
"Yeah but I think if we tell him what happened, he'd be serious," Sam pointed out. "Just s thought."
"I hope so too," Kenzie said quietly. "You know I did not mean to startle him so much." |
"It's worth a try," Steve conceded. He shook his head. "Never would have thought dragons."
"I know you didn't," Gemma replied. She nudged Kenzie's shoulder gently. "Give him some time to get used to it. He looked like he was still working on picking up the pieces of himself, he may not be able to handle more than he's got, yet." |
"Dragons, man." Sam shook his head. "What's next? Unicorns?" Because they already had fairies, dammit.
"Perhaps." Kenzie sighed and then shook herself. "We shall see what happens. Now I will be content to wait." |
