Steve had opted to stay with Gemma, and he was sitting on the back of the couch watching her. He could tell she was displeased with this turn of events. He wasn't quite sure what to think of it himself. More teammates were part of Kenzie's hoard, and while he didn't think it was a bad thing, he really didn't know.
Gemma glanced over when she noticed Kenzie. She could see the signs of Kenzie claiming someone, and her heart sank. Making up her mind, she moved away from the window and picked up her purse. Home sounded good now.
Steve fell into step with her quietly. "Had enough for today?" he asked, his voice quiet.
"Yeah," Gemma replied as she headed for the elevator. "Home sounds good right now. Settle in by myself tonight."
"I'll walk you back," Steve said, motioning for her to go first when the elevator doors opened.
Gemma opened her mouth to tell him he didn't have to, and then closed it again.
"Thanks," she said instead. |
Steve nodded and punched the button for ground floor.
"Do you want to talk about it or just go home?" |
"I... I don't know," Gemma admitted. She was quiet as the elevator opened, and she stepped inside. "I mean, what is there to talk about? Obviously, I'm not enough for Kenzie anymore, she wants other people now."
"Maybe." Steve shrugged. "I'm not sure. I don't know enough about her to say whether or not that's true."
"She already claimed someone today," Gemma pointed out as the elevator stopped and opened. "Well, I'm just going to stay out of the way. She can do what she wants."
Steve nodded. "Do you want to walk? I can give you a ride," he offered. He wasn't going to try to persuade her to do anything, he was just going to make sure she was alright.
Gemma shook her head.
"I'll walk," she said. She wanted the time that the walk would take. "But thanks," she added belatedly. |
Steve nodded and headed out the side door, holding it open for her before falling into step with her again.
"Tony still hasn't found out about the rune you gave me." |
Gemma blinked at the abrupt change in subject.
"How is it holding up?" she asked, glancing at him curiously. |
"Well, I broke one bag, but it lasted twice as long as normal," Steve said with a grin. "So I slapped it on another bag, and so far that's all I've had to do."
"Good to know," Gemma said. "Let me know if it starts to fade at all, I can make you another one."
"I'll let you know," Steve agreed. "So far, at least, it's been great. Thanks."
"No problem," Gemma said. She managed a bit of a smile. "I'm good at that, at least."
Steve smiled a little at that, and it was a little sad. "I know how that feels," he said after a moment. "Before the serum, I wasn't good for much besides drawing."
Gemma tilted her head a bit.
"You draw?" she asked. "I didn't know that." She looked a little sheepish. "Then again, I didn't ask, I guess." |
"It's not exactly a well-known public fact," Steve said with a shrug. "Most people don't know."
"I guess I'm a bit surprised, that's all," Gemma admitted. "I didn't have you pinned as an artist."
"Don't much look like one, I guess," Steve said with another little shrug. "Works for me though. Helped out Buck and I a few times, when we were growing up."
"Some of the best spellcasters I know are artists," Gemma said, managing a small smile. "I've seen them do amazing things."
"Well, I have no talent for or interest in magic, so I'll just stick with art," Steve said with a little grin. "At least art makes sense."
