"Magic makes perfect sense," Gemma retorted. Her tentatively good mood dropped like a stone. "Not like dragons," she muttered, looking down a bit.
Steve sighed. "Well, most of the time I've found that people don't always make sense. Sometimes, sure, but not all the time. No matter if they're human or other."
"I don't know if that really applies here," Gemma murmured in reply. She turned away a bit, her keys still in her hand. "Listen, thanks for walking me back, but... I kind of think I want to be alone for a while now." She bit her lip, fighting back some tears.
"Alright," Steve agreed after a few moments. "Call me if you change your mind, alright?" He looked at her for a moment to make sure she got the message before he headed out again. Best not to push, he figured.
Gemma waited until he was gone, and then made her way up to her room. She fell on the bed and hugged a pillow close to her, just sobbing into it.
Kenzie spent a while at the tower with her new hoard before she had to go check on Gemma. She'd known Gemma wouldn't be happy with her, but she couldn't help what she needed, and she wasn't used to this distance between herself and Gemma. So she figured she needed to fix it, somehow. Which is how she ended up in their apartment with a bag of baked goods.
Gemma heard Kenzie get home, but didn't move to get up yet. She hadn't expected Kenzie to get back so soon.
"Gemma?" Kenzie called softly. "I brought you some goodies. I didn't know if you'd eaten yet or not."
"You're back early," Gemma said quietly, glancing over at the doorway. "I thought you would be gone longer."
Kenzie shrugged. "I am giving them all time to adjust," she said. "Tony in particular doesn't quite believe me yet. I may have to drag him out the middle of nowhere to prove to him that I really am a dragon."
"I see," Gemma replied. She didn't make any move to get up and go see Kenzie. "How many more did you claim?"
"Two, so now three of them." Kenzie shrugged. "You saw one of them." She shifted a bit so she could watch Gemma.
Gemma sighed.
"So three now," she murmured. "Great." |
"Three isn't so bad," Kenzie said with a shrug. "One of them is still skeptical, even." And she kind of doubted that she'd be seeing the newest two quite as often as she saw Bucky, even.
"I guess I won't be seeing much of you anymore, then," Gemma murmured, turning away again.
Kenzie frowned. "Why would you think that?" she asked. "I do not spend overmuch time with Barnes, I will not spend more time with the other two. I do still live here, and you are still my first."
"Well, maybe I just want you to myself," Gemma snapped, sitting up. "Maybe I'm selfish like that, just like you!"
Kenzie blinked. "Selfish? Is that how you see me? I am a dragon, Gemma, this is what I am and what I do."
"I thought I was special!" Gemma replied, a bit shrill. "How can I compare with them? I'm nothing next to them! Sue me if I want to pretend to be special for a while longer!"
"Of course you are special," Kenzie said with a frown. "I chose you first, you will always come first to me. Besides, they do not have magic, nor do they have your heritage. You are special, in your own way."
"You have actual superheroes now," Gemma replied bitterly. "What could you possibly need a little hedgewitch for?"
"You are still mine," Kenzie said. "You have been for much longer than any of them. They do not know me or trust me as you do. They do not have time for me as you do." She paused for a moment. "Just because I have claimed them does not mean that they will want me around often."
"Barnes trusts you," Gemma replied. "He's always coming around for you."
Kenzie shrugged. "He comes around when he can, but they all still have other responsibilities," she said. "Regardless, they are mine now, but you were still mine first, and nothing will change that."
"I'll never be as special as they are," Gemma said, tears starting to fall again. "I don't want them to steal you away from me."
