"Got it." Clint headed off to go find Steve. Fortunately it didn't take him long, and it took Steve even less time to text Gemma, trying to find out where she was at.

Gemma's phone had fallen out of her pocket during the ritual, and it sat a ways away on the floor. It lit up, but it didn't vibrate; some of it had gotten fried in the sudden onslaught of magic. Gemma was in too much pain to even notice the light from the phone, and she just lay on the floor whimpering and crying.

Steve's eyes narrowed when she didn't answer, and when she didn't answer after he called.

"Jarvis, can you track down her phone?" he asked, already going to grab the shield. Something was wrong.

"Of course," Jarvis replied. "I will transfer the coordinates into your own phone, Captain." There was a few seconds' pause, and then Steve's phone chimed at him.

"Thank you." Steve took off as soon as he had the coordinates, taking the shield with him. He knew something was wrong, after all.

It took him longer than he'd like to get there, and then he burst into the room, shield up and at the ready.

The sorcerer was just a dried-out husk on the floor, already dead. Gemma, on the other hand, was lying on the floor, still breathing but not moving. She whimpered slightly, occasionally, and didn't react when Steve burst into the room. The magic circle on the floor still shimmered slightly under her.

"Gemma?" Steve ran over to her and dropped to his knees. "Gemma, sweetie? Talk to me, please."

Gemma drew in a shuddering breath, but didn't do more than that. She felt like she was on fire; it hurt too much for her to do more than whine thinly through the pain.

"Okay, easy, easy," Steve soothed. "Easy, sweetie. I'll get you help." He picked her up carefully, trying not to hurt her more.

Gemma gave a high, thin cry as she was picked up. Just the simple touch set her nerves on fire, and it didn't ease. She felt like there was something inside her that could burst out at any moment, and it pushed at her as if trying to break free. She felt thin and stretched, about to rupture, and it was agony.

Steve grimaced and tried to handle her carefully. But he did pull out his phone so he could call Jarvis for backup.

Jarvis immediately notified the rest of the team when Steve's phone came back onto the network. Clearly something was wrong if the captain wasn't texting the others himself, and Jarvis was capable of making the decision to contact the rest of the team.

Steve got her back to the tower, with a little trouble, and got her inside. But he was already worried sick.

"Bruce," he called, hoping the good doctor would be around.

Bruce was already nearby, having gotten the alert from Jarvis.

"Do you know what happened?" he asked as he immediately started to look over Gemma.

"No. I have no idea." Steve shook his head. "I just found her like this. There was some magic stuff going on there."

"She's burning up," Bruce said as he took her vitals. "Pulse is fast, and a bit thready. I can try to get her cooled down and stable, but I don't know what to do when it comes to magic."

"I'll call Dr. Strange," Steve said. "Just tell me what you need me to do besides that." He shifted Gemma a bit, glancing around to find a good place to put her.

"Lay her down on the couch," Bruce said. "I'll see what I can do to get her stable until Strange gets here. Go call him, and then go into the kitchen and get yourself something to drink."

Steve nodded and set her down gently, carefully, before he left to go call Dr. Strange. Hopefully Strange would actually have some answers.

Bruce immediately set to work getting Gemma cooled down and stable. The fever wouldn't go down, but he managed to get her pulse steadier.

It took Steve a little bit to get a hold of Strange, but when he did, Strange said he'd be there as soon as he could. Which turned out to be an hour or so, so not bad.

"Where is she?" Strange asked as soon as Steve let him in.

"In here," Bruce said from the other room. He was staying close, keeping an eye on Gemma's vitals.

"Doctor Banner," Strange greeted, glancing at him before focusing on Gemma. "Well. This is interesting." He crouched down next to the couch, looking her over without touching her.

"I've gotten her pulse steady," Bruce said to Strange. "But she's running a fever and I can't figure out why."

"I need to find out exactly what happened," Strange said. "But from what I can tell, she just absorbed a good deal of magic. Magic that does not feel like her own, yet."
