"Alright?" Kenzie asked, watching him with some concern. He did still seem a little stiff, and she wasn't sure if she'd overstepped or not.
"Fine," Bucky replied. "Socket's a little testy sometimes." He rolled his shoulder a bit and shook the arm out. The plates in the arm ripped a bit.
Kenzie peered at the arm curiously when it did that. "It is responsive, I had wondered."
"It's... connected," Bucky replied, flexing his fingers. "I can't explain how. I don't understand it. I just know that it works."
Kenzie nodded. "May I?" she asked, reaching over until her fingers were a few inches from the metal.
Bucky hesitated for a moment, and then nodded.
"Go ahead," he said, turning so the arm was closest to her. |
Kenzie touched the arm, gently at first, and then with a little bit of pressure, seeing how it reacted. "Fascinating," she murmured.
Bucky just stayed still, letting her explore a bit. The arm automatically adjusted to the poking and prodding, shifting and changing slightly.
Kenzie slid her hand down into his and squeezed experimentally. "Well, now that I've apparently made you thoroughly uncomfortable," she said wryly.
"Just not used to it being touched," Bucky muttered. He didn't pull his hand back. "Not outside of maintenance, anyways."
"Mm." Kenzie looked at him for a few moments. "You will tell me if I do too much?" Yes, he was much better already, but she wasn't sure if he'd actually speak up about being uncomfortable with something.
Bucky didn't respond to that. He still wasn't sure exactly how to voice being uncomfortable with something, so he just didn't say anything at all.
Kenzie sighed and released his hand. "If you gather your things we can head out when you're ready," she told him, giving him an easy out.
Bucky hesitated a bit. He had kind of liked the contact, to be honest, though he appreciated the out for what it was. After a moment, he nodded.
"The quicker we're home, the better," he said. |
Kenzie nodded and busied herself with tidying up so everything would be in good condition next time she needed the hide out. Plus, it gave him some space, so win-win.
Bucky gathered his things quickly and pulled his shirt back on. It didn't take him long at all to be ready to go again.
Kenzie walked out with him quietly, heading back towards civilization again.
"I'm a little surprised your phone hasn't been going off incessantly," she said, glancing over at him as they walked. |
"Turned it off," Bucky admitted, glancing at her. "Left the location chip on, but turned the rest of it off. I didn't want any of them getting on my case."
Kenzie snorted quietly. "Ah," she murmured. "I have to admit I'm a little surprised. You wouldn't have done that a few months ago."
"Would have a few decades ago," Bucky murmured. "Maybe. If there'd been cell phones."
Kenzie snorted. "Well, do try and give me warning if you start feeling the need to bring back girls to the tower so I can clear out."
Bucky blinked.
"What?" he asked, looking at her, a bit bewildered. |
"You did say you were feeling more like the person Steve remembers," Kenzie pointed out. "And I am familiar with your history."
Bucky snorted a bit.
"Well, that bit don't happen anymore," he replied. "Can promise you that." |
"Oh?" Kenzie raised her eyebrows at him, because she was curious. "Not interested anymore?"
