"That's not what I said!" Gilbert snapped back. "I never meant to say anything weird or embarrassing. Why doesn't that count for something? I had a revelation okay and it just slipped out. Honestly, you were staring at me so hard and I couldn't figure out why." He huffed. Did he ever say Matthew or his feelings didn't matter? Not that he could think of.
Matthew winced when Gilbert snapped at him. "I was staring at you because I think you are a very attractive man. But you already knew that. So don't act like it's some sort of huge revelation." he snapped back. He stood and glared at the albino slightly. If he knew he was just going to be yelled at like this, he wouldn't have come.
Gilbert snapped his mouth shut as his face burned red. He looked up at Matthew, hesitating when he saw it looked like the other would leave him. "Y-yes it is," he admitted with a shake of his head. "Uh...like I said before, I've never been in a relationship. Sure people like my body, but that's all just crap. No one's ever liked me." He thought that's what Matthew thought of him. He wasn't just looking at him like everyone else did when he danced. Was he?
"I did like you, yes. But now I'm not so sure I should." Matthew said. He was slightly annoyed that Gilbert seems to forgotten when they met. One of the first things the albino had asked is if he liked him then flat out told him not to. This man was confusing him and it was making his head hurt. He didn't know what to think.
Gilbert ran a hand over his face. "I'm not sure if you should like me either," he said honestly. "I used to not want that, but you're the first person I've gotten this close to besides Ludwig. It's messing things up in my head..." The part of him that didn't trust people seemed to have receded so that the lonely part he always denied came to the surface. But he still didn't know how to deal with people well.
"You are confusing me! First you don't want me to like you. Then you do want me to like you. Now you're saying, again I might add, that I shouldn't. I don't know what you want from me!" Matthew exclaimed. He ran a hand through his hair. He really didn't know what he was supposed to be feeling right now.
"Well you seem to be first to say I'm an asshole so that's why you shouldn't like me! Obviously I'm not good material for it. Regardless of how I might feel," he added in a mutter. He flushed a bit at what he said and dropped his gaze. He probably did like Matthew if he could let himself feel that.
"You are an asshole." Matthew agreed. "But I think you are capable of being a good person. You know, deep down inside. You just have to find that part of yourself." He truly did believe that. But he felt there was something holding Gilbert back from being that good person. He just didn't know what.
"Why do you believe that?" Gilbert asked as he lifted his head. It was an odd thing to say and he didn't think he'd given Matthew a reason to think it even when he did try to be a good person. It just didn't seem to work out for him. "Even I don't think I'm a good person and when I do try, I only seem to piss you off more."
"I believe every person has the ability to be a good person. You just have to find that part inside of you." Matthew told him. "And I'm not angry at you.... Well, I am. But I'm more upset than anyone thing else." He wasn't sure why Gilbert didn't think know he could be a good person. He knew he was.
Maybe Gilbert needed to reread the dictionary to figure out the difference between angry and upset. Maybe that was his issue. He sighed and rubbed his hands along his pants before standing, trying to look like the conversation and the sun didn't make him hot and anxious. "That sounds like something my brother would say," he said with a small huff of amusement. He considered believing Matthew, but he had to think on it some still. "Ugh, it's seriously hot though. Can I go buy us some ice cream or something?"
Matthew wasn't sure if he should be offended or not for being compared to Ludwig. Though Ludwig was a good person, he seemed really uptight. But, he chose not to let it get to him. He looked around the park. "Over there's a man selling some." He said, pointing. Without waiting for Gilbert, he started walking in that direction.
Gilbert hurried so he got in front of Matthew and reached the ice cream vendor first. He looked around at the different flavors with his hands on his hips. He didn't much like sweets, but nothing beat ice cream on a hot day. It lightened the atmosphere too and that he could appreciate. "Come on, what flavor do you want?" he asked.
Matthew went over and stopped next to Gilbert. He looked over the flavors, humming quietly to himself as he thought. ".. I want the maple flavored." he said, his voice quiet. He was surprised the vendor had that flavor in stock. Not everybody did, so it was a pleasant surprise to find here. He'd have to stop at this vendor more often when he was here.
"One maple and one sherbert," Gilbert told the vendor and seconds later thrust the maple one out to Matthew. He honestly didn't know that flavor existed, but to each their own. He licked a stripe around the base of his cone before looking for somewhere else to go. "Maybe we should go sit in the shade next."
Matthew took the ice cream Gilbert shoved into his hands happily. He took a lick of it as he nodded to what Gilbert said. "That sounds good." he told him. Though he still felt a bit awkward around the albino. He did get him ice cream, so he figured he could hang around a bit longer. But if it got uncomfortable again, he was going to leave. He started walking down the path, looking for a good place to sit.
Gilbert ended up stepping off the path and plopping into the grass. It was a random place to sit, but it was shade and he didn't care. "I burn real easy you know and I forgot to put sunscreen on," he said as he lifted one arm and gave it a sullen look. It would be just his luck to get skin cancer and die before he turned thirty. He didn't know if he wanted to return to their earlier, serious conversation so he just stuck with random small talk.
Matthew almost didn't notice when Gilbert stopped, but went back and sat next to him. He felt bad about being the one to suggest meeting here. But it felt like neutral ground and safe. "I'm sorry... I forgot albinos burn easily.." he muttered his apology. He kept his head down as he slowly licked his ice cream.
"Ah, most people don't know. I'm surprised you do. People forget all the time that I'm not just weird looking. Anyway, my fault for forgetting." Gilbert shrugged one shoulder and went back to his ice cream. It'd been so long since he had any that he savored the flavor with a sigh of bliss.
"I'm still sorry..." Matthew muttered. He kept his eyes down. He didn't want to look at Gilbert. He could tell the other was enjoying his ice cream. He was himself. ".. Do you want to taste my ice cream?" he asked. It was one of his personal favorite flavors and he enjoyed sharing it with his friends. Even if they thought it was a weird flavor.
"Don't be." Gilbert didn't know why Matthew kept apologizing for that thing. It didn't make sense. He turned to look at the other man, surprised by the offer. "Uh, sure..." He leaned forward to taste it, catching a drop that tried to escape his lips with his finger. "Hn, that's pretty good actually. Never had maple before." He held out his ice cream. "Want some of mine?"
Matthew found himself muttering sorry again under his breath so that Gilbert couldn't hear him. Though he smiled when the albino said the maple ice cream was good. It was the best, in his opinion. He was surprised when the other offered to let him try his. "Uh.. Ok.." He leaned closer and licked it, quickly leaned away once he was done, blushing lightly. He felt slightly embarrassed by the action, though he wasn't sure why.
Gilbert noticed Matthew blush and it made him blush so that he forgot where they were or that they held ice cream. "Uh..." he started and that was exactly as far as his sentence got. The feeling of ice cream dripping onto his hand jogged him out of the brain-dead state and he jerked. "Ah shit! This stuff melts fast!"
"Of course it does. It's ice cream." Matthew said, licking his own cone. The coolness of the ice cream helped cool down his heated face. He kept his eyes down again, afraid that if he even looked at Gilbert he'd start blushing again. And that was something he didn't want to happen. He's been embarrassed enough in front of the albino.
Gilbert finished his ice cream way too fast to make up for its melting, giving himself brain-freeze, but freeing up his hands. He licked the stickiness off of them before falling onto his back to look up through the tree branches. "Ah yeah, that hit the spot. It's been way to long since I've been out like this. Glad we met up..."
