Colette kicked the door again, briefly regretting that she wasn't like her sister and didn't carry weapons with her. "What the hell?!" she demanded, looking at Barnes, even as she was trying to figure out another way out.
Barnes didn't reply. Safehouse first, everything else would come after. Luckily, the safehouse he'd chosen wasn't far, and he was confident that Hydra wouldn't find it for a while.
Colette finally quieted down after a few minutes, as the circus got far enough away that she knew no one would hear her. She huffed and flopped back against the seats.
"So, you gonna tell me why you kidnapped me, or just glare?" |
"In a secure location," Barnes replied, turning off the main road and into a slightly more residential area. He headed towards an old apartment building, and pulled the SUV around back.
Colette crossed her arms over her chest, glowering at him. But she didn't start screaming again. She figured she wouldn't get any help anyway.
Once the SUV was parked and out of sight, Bucky got out and went around to get Colette.
"Inside," he said, gesturing to the fire escape. "Third floor." |
Colette glared at him. Her gaze flickered around, in case there was anything useful around, clearly debating her chances if she didn't cooperate.
Barnes took the glare for what it was and quickly put her over his shoulder. The apartment building was largely vacant, so it wouldn't matter if she made noise. He climbed the fire escape quickly, slipping into the third floor window.
Colette yelped at that but otherwise just saved herself some trouble. Instead of struggling now, she let him do the heavy lifting (literally) and observed everything else for the moment.
Once he'd hauled her into the apartment, Barnes made sure the place was secure before turning back to her.
"The arm needs maintenance," he said. |
"The arm? Shoulda found a doctor," Colette said, eyeing him. Although she could tell one of his arms wasn't flesh, he'd gripped her way too hard for that.
Barnes raised his metal hand and slipped off the glove. He flexed the fingers a bit.
"This arm," he said. "You are authorized to perform maintenance on it." |
"Authorized by who?" Colette asked, narrowing her eyes at him, even as she took a cautious step forward. Part of her was extremely curious about the arm.
"There was a list," Barnes replied, watching her carefully. "You are the last one who has not been... compromised." Meaning he had no idea who to trust, but he was damn sure he couldn't trust anyone blatantly Hydra.
"Still don't know what you mean," Colette told him. But she was frowning a little , trying to puzzle that over and figure out what list and how he would know anything about her.
Barnes paused, and then began to strip to the waist. Clearly, she needed to see the arm in its entirety to understand.
"What," Colette said when she saw him stripping. Her kidnapper was really kind of hot. And then her brain shorted out for a completely different reason when she saw the arm. "Holy shit," she breathed, taking a step closer. "How does that even work?"
"I don't know," Barnes replied as he worked the releases on the arm. "I only use it." He popped off the arm, holding it by the elbow. "It needs maintenance."
Colette eyed him for a few moments. "And what do I get out of this?" she asked, not moving to take the arm yet.
Barnes paused. That was definitely not a question he had been prepared for. Nothing his handlers had told him had taken that into account. He had no money, so traditional payment wasn't an option, although he had no idea if she was thinking of a more... personal kind of payment.
"What is the price for the appropriate maintenance?" he asked. |
"I walk away," Colette said immediately. "You don't kill me, because I know you can. You don't hurt my sister, either." She narrowed her eyes a bit at him. "Terms are still negotiable."
Barnes considered that for a moment, and then cautiously nodded.
"That is acceptable," he said. |
"Alright." Colette finally stepped forward, cautiously, to start examining the arm. "I need tools, too."
"What do you need?" Barnes asked. He had a basic maintenance kit in the hideout, he was certain of that.
"Not sure yet. I'll start off with some screwdrivers," Colette said, frowning a little at the arm. "I'll let you know as I go."
