Barnes nodded and went to retrieve the maintenance kit. He would do whatever was needed to make sure she was able to work on the arm.
Colette took the kit once he handed it over and started working, although she was taking her time. She had no idea what she was really dealing with here. And she was, maybe, possibly, hoping to delay and take enough time that either she could figure out how to contact Lila or this guy would fall asleep and she could slip out.
Unfortunately for her plans, Barnes was accustomed to keeping long watches when he needed to. He set himself up so he could keep an eye on the door and the window at the same time and settled in to wait.
By the time light was peeking through the curtains, Colette was the one struggling to stay awake. She was used to long nights, but not like this, and not right after a show.
Barnes could see her struggling to stay awake.
"There is a bed," he said, pointing to a mattress in the corner that had a single pillow and blanket on it. |
"This is going to take more than a few more hours," Colette muttered, more to herself than to him. "Can't hurt to take a quick nap." Well, yes it could, but she didn't think he'd murder her in her sleep. So she gave in and went to go lay down, trying to ignore him for now.
Barnes just nodded and let her rest. He could go another day or two if he had to, and he didn't trust her not to run off if he took a quick nap. So he just kept watch.
Meanwhile, back with the Avengers, Steve, Clint, and Natasha had gone back over every inch of the fairgrounds and had not found Colette. So they'd taken Lila back with them to the tower to try and figure out what had happened.
Lila was freaking out. It wasn't like Colette to just disappear. Something had to have happened. It didn't help that she'd found Colette's cell phone in their tent, so she couldn't even call to see if her sister was alright.
"You alright?" Steve asked, looking at her. "I know it's been a long night, but things will be okay."
Lila jumped at the sudden voice behind her, and just barely stopped herself from pulling one of her knives.
"I'm worried about Colette," she said quietly. "Something happened, I know it did, I just wish I knew if she's alright." |
"We'll find her," Steve assured her. "She'll be fine, and you'll get to see her again soon." He didn't come all the way into the room yet, instead just looking at her. At least Clint had vouched for her.
Lila made a vague sound at that. She wasn't going to relax at all until she knew her sister was alright. She just had no idea how to find Colette.
"We're looking into it," Steve assured her. "Just give us a bit of time, we'll find her."
"Then go," Lila said. She turned away slightly, taking out her knives and a whetstone. "I'll be here if you need me."
Steve let her be, taking the hint. He'd check in with her soon, in a bit. And in the meantime, he'd check in with the team.
Once she'd sharpened her knives, Lila found her way into the practice ring, and was just throwing her knives at the spinning board. It kept her occupied, and was more productive than pacing and fidgeting.
Clint came and found her an hour and a half later. "Doing alright?" he asked, leaning back against the wall.
"My sister is missing," Lila replied, a tad too even. She threw another knife, and it landed cleanly alongside six others, all neatly arrayed within a single swirl of white on the spinning board.
"Well, yeah, I meant aside from that," Clint said with a shrug. "You had anything to eat or drink recently?"
"Define recently," Lila said as she walked up and pulled her knives out of the board. She inspected the weapons briefly, to make sure none of them were damaged, and then backed off again. She threw the first one at the center of the board.
"That means it's time for a break. Don't throw those at me, okay, I know how stressful this is," Clint said soothingly. "Besides, you won't be any use to her once we find her if you're half-asleep on your feet from lack of nutrition."
"I've gone longer than this before without anything," Lila replied, only pausing long enough for him to get out of her way before resuming her target practice. "One night is nothing."
"It might not just be one night," Clint pointed out. "But fine. I'll give you two more hours in here, and then you're getting a snack and something to drink."
"You're not my mother," Lila retorted, throwing another knife. She might have thrown it with a little more force than necessary. "And you're not my ringmaster. Back off."
