"Kid, really, been here before," Clint said. "You need to stop for a while. This is not productive, and it's not helping us find her. You want to help? I'll find some way for you to help. If you stop throwing the damn knives."
"Throwing the knives is actually my job," Lila replied. "Besides, I'm not throwing them anywhere near you. And unless you somehow have a Marauder's Map in your pocket that covers all of New York, it's better to practice than sit on my thumbs and do nothing."
"Your sister had her phone on her, right?" Clint asked. "Seems like she should keep it with her, anyway."
"No, her phone was in our tent," Lila replied. "If she had it on her, things would be a lot easier. But it's not like we were expecting the proper order of things to completely collapse on us."
Clint huffed and flopped down in a chair. "Well, you know her best," he said reasonably. "Tell me about her."
Lila glanced at him a bit sideways, raising an eyebrow.
"What are you asking about?" she asked. "Sounds like you want to know something in particular." |
Clint shrugged. "Well, you're so adamant that she wouldn't just leave," he said. "Or be tempted off by something or someone."
"She wouldn't," Lila replied firmly. "We don't know anyone around here for her to have left with. And she would have told me if she had plans to leave on her own."
"So, likely option at this point is that she didn't leave of her own will." Clint was quiet for a moment. "Not the option I was hoping for."
"I don't know what else you were expecting," Lila muttered as she threw another knife. She growled a bit at herself when it went a bit off-course.
"Wasn't expecting anything," Clint said. "Just hoping. Kidnapping sucks, and there are too many variables right now."
Lila didn't reply, just going to retrieve her knives again. She didn't want to talk about it anymore, not when there was nothing she could do about it.
Clint sighed and got up. "I'm gonna go see where Stark's at with this," he said. "You should think about taking a break." And he left without making her do anything.
Lila ignored him for the moment.
A while later, though, she put her knives away and ventured out of the practice tent. She did need to eat something, no matter what she'd told him before. |
Steve was in the kitchen, having made himself a sandwich for now. He glanced over at her when she came in and nodded, acknowledging her but letting her keep the silence if she wanted.
Lila went over and made herself a sandwich. She sat down with it, but didn't immediately start eating it.
"What happened?" she asked quietly after a moment. She glanced at Steve. "Yesterday, we were a circus. Now everything's falling apart." |
"Yesterday you had Hydra hiding right in front of you," Steve said with a shrug. "That's what Hydra does. They destroy everything."
"We had a good thing here," Lila murmured. "What right did anyone have to take that away?"
"None," Steve said with a grim smile. "I don't know yet why Hydra was keeping two operatives in your show, but I'll find out."
"I don't get it," Lila said quietly. "How did nobody realize? Anton helped me learn knives, for god's sake."
"You weren't looking for it," Steve said quietly. "You didn't think Hydra would invade your lives. They probably studied you before, tried to figure out who you would object to least."
"No, you don't understand, we should have realized," Lila insisted. "Anton and Gaston should never have gotten so close..."
Steve shook his head. "It's over with now," he said. "You don't have to worry about that anymore, at least."
Lila just shook her head a bit, finally picking up her sandwich and nibbling at it. Clearly, he still didn't understand, but she wasn't about to correct him at all.
Steve knew he was missing something, but she'd had her privacy invaded enough already, so he just stayed quiet. For now.
