"Oh that doesn't surprise me, Regina is the queen here now." Jalia grinned a bit. "We should probably find her and figure out what exactly her territory is."
"I'll see if I can map it while I'm out here," Shay replied. She turned her bike towards the trees. "I'm going to see what I can find in there."
"Okay. Keep your eyes open, and if Indy and Garnet freak, it's for a good reason," Jalia reminded her, tapping her fingers in a nervous rhythm against the console.
"Eyes and ears open, yup," Shay said. "Alright, I'm going in." Revving the engine, she took off towards the trees, her raptors easily keeping pace with her.
Jalia kept tracking her on the screen. "You're getting close to the old raptor cage now," she said. "It's less than a mile from you."
"May as well go take a look, then," Shay replied, turning just slightly to head towards the cage. "See if it's salvageable." She whistled sharply to Indigo and Garnet, and they followed closely.
Jalia stayed quiet as she waited for the verdict, just keeping track of the little group as they moved and making notes about getting more thermals up and running in this area of the park.
Shay didn't get much closer. Indigo and Garnet suddenly surged forward with a snarl, just in time for another raptor to come shooting out of the trees at them. Shay skidded to a stop as Indigo and Garnet tangled with the other raptor briefly, and then the three broke apart. The raptors hissed at each other as they had their standoff, and it gave Shay time to get a good look at the newcomer. She reached for her walkie slowly.
"Li, it's Blue," she murmured into it. "She found us out here by the cage." |
"...Son of a bitch." Jalia scrambled to get that down. "Okay, she's claimed that as her territory. Call your two back, back up slowly. Don't turn your back on her and don't run. Just back off slowly. Hopefully she won't follow."
"Li, I know how to handle raptors," Shay said. She put the walkie back onto her bike and whistled sharply. "Indy! Garnet! Stand down!" Both of her raptors hissed in displeasure, but backed off of Blue slowly. Blue hissed back, but didn't move closer. As soon as they were far enough away that she had enough reaction room, Blue snarled at them one more time and then disappeared into the brush again.
Jalia grumbled to herself, because who was the behaviorist here? Which one of them had studied everything available on dinosaur behaviors and territory patterns? But she kept it (mostly) to herself.
As soon as Shay was sure Blue was gone (once Indigo and Garnet stopped growling and started to investigate their surroundings again), she turned back and headed for the valley again. She'd scope out a few more of the herbivores, but she really needed to get back to the control room and contact her uncle. Owen needed to know that Blue was still out there.
"Hey, I'm on my way back," she relayed to Jalia. "Heading through the valley again. Hey, you know, there are enough gallies here, we're going to need to thin them out anyways to keep the population stable, I'm going to let Indy and Garnet do their thing." |
"Okay, have fun," Jalia said, distracted once again as she got a few of the thermal cameras up. "Or let them have fun, or whatever."
Shay snickered.
"Oh they will," she said, easing her bike to a stop at the top of a hill. "We'll be back soon. And we should probably call Owen and give him an update." |
"I'm getting the most recent info on him now," Jalia said. "I need to get back to work. See you soon." She put her walkie down again, going back to work. She'd go out with Ruby soon enough, anyway.
Shay grinned and put her walkie away. She whistled to her raptors.
"Indy! Garnet!" Both dinosaurs' attention snapped to her, and she pointed to the gallimimus herd. "Go hunt!" The raptors took off, darting down into the valley and immediately homing in on a gallimimus to take down. |
Jalia just worked for a bit longer, took a five-minute break to check on her group of four, and then got back to work. It wasn't hard work, just annoying, mostly, since half the systems were down or offline at least in part, if not in full.
Shay let Indigo and Garnet have their fun hunting down a pair of gallimimus, and then she called them back. Time to get back to the control room. Starting her bike again, she turned and headed back to the main section of the park.
Jalia had figured that Shay would want to call Owen, and had left his number where she could find it while she investigated a few other things in the building.
As soon as Shay was back (and sure that Indigo and Garnet were behaving; she'd set them loose inside Paddock 9, since Regina wasn't in there anymore), she picked up her phone and dialed the number that Jalia had left for her. Hopefully, their uncle would pick up.
"'lo?" Owen answered after the third ring. He'd been working on one of his project bikes, but at least he'd wiped his hands off.
"Owen! Hey, it's Shay," she said. She bit her lip slightly, and then just plowed on ahead. "Listen, I just took Indy and Garnet out with me when I scouted around the island, we're back on the island, by the way, and you're not going to believe what happened."
"...Aw, dammit, don't tell me Indominus had eggs," Owen groaned. "Please, please tell me anything but that, Shay."
"God, no, Owen, Jesus, you think I'd have time to call if there were more of that nightmare creature around?" Shay replied. "Actually, we were trying to map the outer edges of Regina's territory, since most of the herbivores moved out into the valley, and when we got close to the old raptor cage, Blue came out of freaking nowhere and stopped us about a quarter of a mile out."
"She kept her territory," Owen said musingly. "'Course she did, she's a strong girl." He shook his head a bit. "How did she look?"
