"Let me know if you do," Cameron said, grinning. "I get all the coupons." She pulled her phone out and waggled it a bit.
Sabine snickered. "I'll run everything past you first probably," she said with a little grin. Not that she really needed coupons, not with what she got paid.
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Cameron asked, grinning. "Let's go take a look around."
Sabine snorted at her but headed into the mall, starting to browse. It had been a while since the two of them had taken a shopping day.
Cameron led the way into the first store, still grinning. She definitely wanted to pick up some more lotions; new smells had come out, and she wanted them.
Sabine let her friend lead the way, just taking her time looking around. She did frown a bit when she noticed an employee redoing a display that looked a little precarious.
Cameron saw the display a split second before it toppled over. Without thinking, she flung up her hands in a 'stop' sort of motion, and everything from the display froze just before it hit the floor.
"That was close," she said as she lowered the things to the floor gently. |
Almost everyone in the store had frozen and was looking at Cameron. The first person to move was Sabine.
"Nice," she murmured to Cameron. "Good catch." The person who had almost been hit, however, didn't look quite so appreciative. |
"Thanks," Cameron murmured back, very aware of the stares she was getting. "Guess playing around with Tony sometimes has its perks." She looked at the person who almost got hit by the display. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah," the person said, almost automatically. She looked spooked, more by Cameron than by almost being hit, and without another word she left the store.
Sabine grumped. "Some people just have no manners." |
Cameron didn't comment. She wasn't surprised that the person left. She knew how a lot of people felt about mutants. A bit stiffly, she started to peruse the store again, but her heart wasn't in it anymore.
Sabine stuck next to her, keeping a careful eye and ear on everyone else in the store. She knew the common opinion of mutants could swing either way easily, and she wasn't going to let anyone give Cameron trouble over this.
Cameron could hear some whispers starting up, and her shoulders tensed up a little. So much for an easy day of shopping.
"Bet the entire mall will know about what just happened before we can even make it back to the front doors," she murmured to Sabine. |
"Unfortunately," Sabine murmured. "You didn't do anything wrong, they're just being fools." She shook her head. "Do you want to go?"
"I don't want to cut our shopping day short," Cameron protested. "It's supposed to be a nice day away from the mansion."
"If you feel uncomfortable, it's okay," Sabine said. "We can always drive around a bit, or go to that theater a few miles away. Just say the word, I really don't mind."
Cameron considered it for a moment, and then sighed, her shoulders slumping a bit.
"Yeah," she murmured. "Let's go. Shopping doesn't feel fun anymore." |
"Okay." Sabine left the store, walking with her back towards the car. "I'll see what's playing, I know there's at least one cutesy animated one out."
"Sorry I messed up the shopping trip," Cameron said as she got into the car. She jammed the key into the ignition with a bit more force than strictly necessary. "I hate people..."
"Don't worry about it. Instead of shopping and dealing with people, now we get to go see a cutesy movie. No big deal." Sabine smiled, trying to get her to relax again.
Cameron sighed.
"I know, it's just..." she trailed off, frustrated. "It makes me angry that people do that." |
"I know. Me too." Sabine sighed. "Unfortunately the world hasn't changed that much yet. Give it time, things will change sooner or later."
"I hope so," Cameron said as she started driving towards the theater. She did make a quick stop at a gas station for some cheap snacks, though.
Sabine got the tickets for them and meandered her way into the theater.
"At least it's fairly quiet," she murmured. |
"That's good," Cameron murmured back. Once they were seated in the best seats they could find, she took some of the snacks out of her purse and handed them to Sabine. "Here."
