Logan was keeping an eye on her, as much as she would let him. He knew she wasn't anywhere near back to normal yet, and he wanted to make sure she would be okay.
Unfortunately for everyone, someone knocked on the front door of the mansion, waiting to be let in. And that someone went by the name Erik Lenscherr. |
Charles himself let in Erik, partially because he did want to see his old friend, and partially to help run interference.
"Erik," he greeted, wheeling his chair back enough to let Erik in. "You're earlier than I expected." |
"Better to be early than late, I find," Erik said as he stepped through the door. "It's good to see you again, old friend."
"You as well. You're looking as dramatic as ever." But he smiled to show he meant no ill by his words, only a gentle teasing that somehow remained despite all the history between them.
"Well, one of us needs to be," Erik replied, smirking just slightly.
Charles chuckled. "Ah yes, because my chair isn't dramatic enough on its own," he agreed. "Shut the door behind you." He wheeled off towards his study, trusting Erik to follow him, at least for now.
Erik nodded and did so, smoothly pulling it closed with his power. He walked next to Charles quietly, letting his friend lead the conversation for now.
"It's been a long time since you've wanted to come here," Charles said, glancing over at him and leading the way into his study. "What changed your mind?"
"I've heard... rumors," Erik replied, walking into the study. "Rumors of what others have been calling a graft-mutant."
"Ah." That actually made perfect sense, with Erik. Charles nodded. "I suppose that's an accurate enough description of her." He couldn't help being a bit evasive, just a little, just to make him curious.
"So the rumors have substance, then?" Erik asked. "Fascinating. One must wonder how such a thing was accomplished."
"That I'm not entirely sure of," Charles told him. "It was rather traumatic. I don't ask unless I have to." Meaning Erik shouldn't push, either.
"Oh?" That was interesting. As polite as Charles tried to be, Erik knew that his friend was more curious than a cat and sometimes just couldn't help himself. "Well, then, how on earth do you intend to find the ones responsible? You can't possibly be planning to just wait for more... results."
"Of course not," Charles agreed. "Logan and Ororo found a few of them, and I'm working on tracking the rest."
"It would be easier if you knew what you were looking for," Erik pointed out. "Even Cerebro can only do so much."
"I'm aware." Charles smiled faintly. "I haven't heard anything new from them recently, but I am keeping my ears open. Just in case."
"And your... charge?" Erik asked. Now he was very curious about the graft mutant, since Charles had admitted that the person--girl-- was in the mansion.
"Adapted very well, I was pleasantly surprised," Charles told him. "She's currently staying here, actually."
"You would hardly let her stay anywhere else," Erik pointed out. "I know you, old friend. You want to keep an eye on her."
"For multiple reasons," Charles agreed, rather evasively. "And if I'm correct, you want to see her."
"If you would be so kind," Erik agreed, nodding.
Charles nodded and mentally pinged both Sabine and Logan.
So, a few minutes later, Sabine knocked on the door, curious to see what the professor needed. |
Logan caught Erik's scent before the door even opened, and he pulled a face. Nope, he was not going to go in there, not if he could help it. But he did listen closely, keeping his attention on Sabine just in case she needed him.
"Come in, Sabine," Charles called.
Sabine stepped in, looking between the two of them for a moment before one eyebrow shot up. "Well, this is new," she commented mildly. |
"Erik has been following up on some rather unusual rumors regarding new mutations cropping up," Charles said, trying to be careful about his words. He knew how people tended to feel about Erik, and he knew that Sabine was still not okay with what happened to her.
