Sabine could put two and two together, even with the professor's careful wording. She'd worked with Tony too long not to be able to.
"You're here because of what they did to me." She looked at Erik, frowning. "Graft mutant, I think they're calling it now." |
“Indeed they are,” Erik agreed. “I had hoped to get an understanding of what, exactly, was done to you, if you would be so kind.”
Sabine fidgeted for a moment before she nodded once, jerky. "I can't... tell you everything," she said, speaking slowly and hesitantly. "I don't... I don't remember all of it. Nor do I want to." She grimaced.
"Tell me what you can remember, then," Erik responded. It would have to be enough, for now. Any information was good at the moment.
Sabine fidgeted again but started talking. She did remember most of it, and most of it involved needles and injections and some stress testing.
Erik listened to it all, mentally filing away the information. Yes, he'd suspected as much, and it all smacked of the Nazi experiments from his youth. That alone made him angry.
Sabine did go very, very still when one of the metal handles started rattling of its own accord.
"Erik," Charles murmured, frowning at his old friend. "You know better." It was a gentle chide and reminder in one. |
Erik nodded once and got himself back under control.
"My apologies," he murmured. He held his power in an iron grasp, not allowing any more to escape. |
Sabine relaxed fractionally at that and nodded.
"Questions?" she asked. He seemed the type to have some. |
"Hm, yes," Erik said. He took a moment to gather his thoughts. "Have you any idea why they chose you? And were there others?"
"There were others," Sabine confirmed. "Multiple others. I was one of the more... successful ones, I guess you could say." She shrugged, tapping her fingers against her arm. "I'm not sure why they chose me. I don't know if it was random chance, or what."
"Do you know how many more successful results there were?" Erik asked. That was important information to know.
"Not many." Sabine frowned a bit. "They were getting ready to move us somewhere, I think because they found out someone knew where they were. I don't think there were more than six or seven that they considered to be fully successful, like me."
“So there were less successful subjects, then?” Erik clarified. That could potentially be a problem later.
"There were." Sabine wrapped her arms around her middle, shivering briefly. "Not all of them were allowed to live."
"I see," Erik said. And he did, all too well. He was quiet for a moment. "Thank you, my dear. I know it must have been very difficult to talk about."
Sabine nodded, still looking a bit shaky. "If you come across any of the others," she said slowly, "don't be too hasty. I got lucky, but there was almost no way to learn control there. It wasn't easy to adjust afterwards."
Erik nodded once to show he heard, but he didn't verbally reply. He gave a small wave of one hand, and the door opened a bit, a subtle sign that she was free to go.
Sabine eyed him for a moment longer before she turned and left the room. She shut the door gently behind her, and realized as she did that her hands were shaking.
Logan was out in the hall waiting for her. He hated that Magneto was around, but he cared more about Sabine.
"Hey," he said softly. Going over to her, he put his arms around her and gently pulled her close. "C'mere, you." |
Sabine went willingly, shuffling in close and hiding her face for a few minutes to give herself a bit of time.
“I’ve got ya,” Logan murmured. He just held her, letting her take her time.
Sabine finally sniffled and pulled back a little bit. Not very far, though.
"That was harder than I thought it would be," she admitted. |
“But you got through it,” Logan said. He nudged her a little. “C’mon, let’s go find you somewhere quiet for a while.”
"Quiet sounds good," Sabine admitted, letting him lead her away from the office. "Also on the list of things I never expected to happen: conversation with Erik Lensher."
