"Oh, rent-free, that's nice," Nika said. "Nowhere is rent-free now, prices are actually a little ridiculous."
Steve snorted. "I know how that goes," he said, because he'd been stuck somewhere else when Bucky was with a woman a few times before. "Hotel isn't so bad, not for one night." |
"No kidding," Bucky replied. He grinned. "Not like the old days. Practically dirt-cheap compared to now."
"Exactly," Cassie said. She grinned. "Though I will admit, I'll sleep in the car before I go into the house when Nika's brought someone home." |
"Everything was practically dirt-cheap compared to now," Nika pointed out. "Did you have a heart attack first time you went grocery shopping?"
Steve snorted. "She that bad?" he asked sympathetically. |
"Actually, no," Bucky replied. His grin slipped a bit. "I was mostly acclimatized to things by the time I really felt like myself again."
"She's loud," Cassie replied with a shrug. She gave a bit of a sheepish grin. "And I get jealous." |
"Sorry." Nika nudged him with her shoulder. "Don't look so pouty, I'll start thinking you need cheering up."
Steve chuckled. "I know how that goes," he agreed, leaning back and taking a sip of his coffee. |
Bucky raised an eyebrow.
"Oh?" he asked, his mood perking up again. "And what did you have in mind?" Cassie sipped her latte as well, just enjoying the company. |
"I might let you win a round or two of shooting." Nika grinned. "If you're lucky."
"Not in any hurry?" Steve asked after a few moments of comfortable silence. He normally didn't have any company in the mornings, and he kind of liked it. |
"Oh you'll let me, huh?" Bucky asked, half teasing and half challenging. "I think you underestimate my skills."
"Not today," Cassie said with a soft, content sigh. "Today is a quiet day, unless my brother calls. But I'm not anticipating that one." |
"And I think you're underestimating mine." Nika smirked. "Get your shit and we'll find out, won't we?"
Steve nodded. "Quiet days are nice," he agreed. "Somehow I don't get as many of those as I'd like." |
"That we will," Bucky said, returning the smirk. He headed inside, gesturing for her to follow him. "Come on, may as well come in with me. Wouldn't make a pretty dame like you wait outside."
"I'd imagine not, what with your job," Cassie said, nodding. She grinned a bit. "It doesn't help when you try to do our jobs, either." |
Nika grinned and followed him inside, glancing around. "Well I should hope not, not after you've seen my house."
Steve snickered. "Technically that's part of my job," he said with a grin. |
"I did offer to bring you back here," Bucky teased as he led her to the elevator.
"Oh no, I don't remember reading anywhere in the history books about Captain America hunting down rogues," Cassie retorted, grinning. |
Nika snorted. "Nah, too big and bright. My place was quieter. Fewer people around, too."
"What kinda history books were you reading that even mention the rogues?" Steve asked with a little grin. |
"Good point," Bucky said. He grinned. "Well, we're here now. Let me just go change and grab my rifle and we can head to the range."
Cassie grinned. "My uncle made sure we knew what was what," she said. "People like us are better off being prepared for things like rogues." |
"I'll wait here." Nika settled herself against the counter to wait for him.
"No kidding." Steve was quiet for a moment. "Well, at least you're prepared." |
Bucky nodded and disappeared into his room. About ten minutes later, he came back out in fresh clothes, with a rifle case strapped to his back.
"Ready?" he asked. "We had to be," Cassie said. "Our mother knowingly had three demigod children. We had to be prepared." |
"Ready." Nika motioned for him to lead the way again, bouncing a little on the balls of her feet. This she was very much looking forward to.
Steve's eyes widened and he whistled softly. "Damn. That is... a lot." |
Bucky grinned and held the door for her.
"After you," he said. "Even better," Cassie continued, grinning, "we're all different, the three of us." |
Nika snorted quietly but headed through the door, glancing around as she did.
"You always this chivalrous or are you just trying to keep up your good image?" Steve made a choked noise, and was very glad he wasn't drinking his coffee. "How?" he asked. "That makes no sense, one is more than enough for most people, but three?" |
"What, I can't be polite?" Bucky asked, raising an eyebrow. "I was raised to treat a lady right."
"Don't ask me," Cassie said, raising her hands. "I have no idea how she managed it. But me, Nika, and Jack all have different fathers, and we're absolutely convinced our mother knew exactly who and what they were." |
"I would remind you that chivalry is dead but I know who your best friend is." Nika quirked a grin. "And what decade you're from."
Steve shook his head. "Your mother is a little insane. Sorry, needed to be said." |
Bucky just grinned and walked with her.
"Come on, I've got a car down in the garage," he said. "Quicker than walking." Cassie raised an eyebrow. "You don't have much room to talk there, Mr. Double Legacy," she pointed out. "Mom's just a little extreme, that's all." |
Nika grinned. "So if I need to skip town in a hurry, I'll borrow your car. Good to know."
"Hey, never said my parents weren't crazy," Steve pointed out. "But raising three demis is hard work." |
Bucky snorted.
"Yeah, right," he replied as he unlocked the car. It was a sleek, dark gray sports car with tinted windows. "It is," Cassie agreed, nodding. "Lucky for us, our fathers take pity on us occasionally." |
Nika chuckled and nodded approvingly at the car. She slid into the passenger seat easily.
Steve nodded. "Yeah, that's good, from what I've heard," he said. "They can be pretty helpful, apparently." |
