Bruce was waiting for them in medical, along with one of Tony's private doctors.
"Set her down carefully," he said to Steve, gesturing to the table. "What happened?" the other doctor asked as she moved closer to get a better look. |
"She was kidnapped, we found her sedated," Steve said, setting Maya down carefully and then taking a step back to give the two room to work.
|
"Doctor Banner briefed me on the important things," the doctor said, nodding. She quickly started to examine Maya. "They obviously knew what they were doing, if she hasn't burned through the sedative yet." She paused when she saw Maya's belly tighten again. "I thought you said she was only eight months pregnant?"
"She is," Bruce replied. His expression was serious. "I was afraid this might be the case when they got her back here." |
"Why? What do you mean?" Steve looked at Bruce, obviously worried now. If anything happened to Maya or the baby...
|
"I need them out of here," the other doctor said to Bruce, already preparing things. Bruce nodded and herded Steve and Colbie towards the door.
"It was likely a combination of the stress and the sedatives," he said quickly to them. "Whatever it was, it's caused her to go into labor, and she's not in any condition to have the baby right now. We thought this might happen, so Doctor Rabwin is going to give Maya a caesarean and get the baby out of her." |
Steve nodded. He knew it wasn't a time to ask questions, not now, but he wasn't about to leave, either. He settled to the side of the door, waiting.
Colbie remained quiet, also waiting for now, though she at least sat down. |
Bruce knew they weren't going to go anywhere.
"I'll let you both know as soon as there's a change," he said. |
Steve nodded. "Thanks, Bruce." He settled in to wait, letting Bruce get to work. He figured it might be a while before they heard anything.
|
Bruce nodded and quickly closed the door.
It wasn't much later that Bucky came upstairs. When he saw Steve and Colbie standing outside of medical, but no Maya, his eyes narrowed. "What's happening?" he asked, going over to them. |
"They're performing an emergency C-section," Colbie said, when Steve didn't respond. "They were already prepared for it." Not that that necessarily made her feel any better, though.
|
Bucky's hands tightened into fists, the metal hand creaking under the pressure.
"Soon as she's in the clear, we're going back," he said firmly, glancing at Steve. "Gonna raze that place to the ground." |
Steve nodded. "As soon as she's clear," he agreed.
"In the meantime, sit." Colbie leveled her gaze at Bucky, since she'd already bullied Steve into complying. |
Bucky met her gaze and leaned against the wall. He wouldn't sit, but he could compromise and not pace.
It seemed like an eternity later, but a high, faint cry came from the closed door. |
Steve was on his feet the instant he heard the sound, torn between joy and still wanting to raze the base. But he didn't leave until Bruce came out.
"It's a girl," he told them. "She and Maya are both resting. They'll be okay, but they're staying here for a few days for observation." |
Some of the tension seeped out of Bucky at that and he nodded.
"Good," he said. He nudged Steve and tilted his head towards the door. |
Steve nodded, glancing at Bruce one more time before he headed out. Time to go get rid of that base. He knew that he and Bucky would both feel better after.
Colbie made no move to follow them this time, instead waiting patiently to see Maya. |
Bruce watched them go, and then looked at Colbie.
"I won't stop you from going in," he said. "Jarvis is monitoring them both for now. But they should be just fine after they get some rest." |
Colbie hesitated a moment before she nodded. "As long as it won't harm either of them," she murmured, getting to her feet easily.
|
"Just try not to disturb them," Bruce replied. He ran a hand through his hair. "I could go the rest of my life not having to do that again."
|
"Hopefully you won't have to," Colbie said, giving him a sympathetic look. "Have some tea. You deserve it."
|
Bruce nodded.
"Have Jarvis notify me when she wakes up," he said. He knew Jarvis would do it anyway, but he wanted to make sure Colbie knew it too. |
"Of course." Colbie nodded and watched him go before she went to go settle in next to Maya and the little one.
|
A few hours later, Maya finally stirred. She opened her eyes with a soft groan and tried to sit up.
|
"Easy," Colbie told her, putting a gentle hand against her shoulder. "Just relax, you're safe. You're both fine." She glanced at the nearest camera and nodded a little to Jarvis in a silent request to contact Bruce.
|
Maya gave a soft whimper as she jostled the wide, stitched and bandaged incision. Her hand went to her belly, and she gasped, eyes opening completely.
"The baby," she said, looking at Colbie and then looking around the room. "Where is she? Where's the baby?" |
