It has to be, Kendra replied. Meet you tonight at the diner, okay?
I'll be there. Bianca slipped her phone back into her pocket, frowning just a little and watching the normal goings-on at the office.
"Is something wrong?" Karen asked her quietly. She'd noticed Bianca going quiet.
"No, nothing," Bianca said. "Just my sister checking in." She made herself smile a bit and got up. "I'm getting a bit more coffee, want any?"
"No, I'm fine," Karen said, "but thank you." She studied Bianca for a moment. "You didn't mention you had a sister. Is she alright?"
"Also hiding out. Apparently it's getting to her." Bianca shrugged. "She'll be okay, though." She didn't mention that she herself would make sure Kendra was okay, by physically seeing her.
"I'm sorry," Karen said, putting a hand on Bianca's arm. "It must be hard, both of you going through this alone."
Bianca smiled a bit, but it was tight and unhappy. "Well, I'm not so alone in this, you three have been great," she said. "But I am worried about my sister. She's having a harder time of it, and we still don't really know if we're safe yet."
"Why did you both split up?" Karen asked. "I would think it would be easier to stick together, right?"
"Has to do with the reason I'm here and not home." Bianca sighed. "There were some people who tried to grab us. I think they were an anti-mutant group." She watched Karen's reaction carefully.
Karen blinked.
"I see," she said. She was curious, but she didn't ask, since she didn't want to pry too much. But she was still dying to know. |
Bianca eyed her for a few more moments before she shrugged.
"Some people hate us for how we were born," she said, her voice quiet. "Even if we don't have any flashy power. Or even very much power at all." |
"I've always imagined it must be difficult," Karen replied carefully, choosing her words. "I mean, having amazing abilities and people getting angry at you for it."
Bianca smiled a little at that.
"It can be," she agreed. "Some people are worse than others, and sometimes things are hard. But some people make things easier, too." She nudged Karen with her shoulder. |
Karen smiled back.
"Well, you won't have to deal with any of that here," she said firmly. "I can promise you that." |
"Thanks." Bianca relaxed a little further at that.
"I was going to run down to the corner store and get more coffee, we're getting a bit low." |
"Do you want me to go with you?" Karen asked, glancing from her to where Matt and Foggy were working, and back again. "I can, if you want."
"Up to you, it should just take a minute." Bianca was planning on just taking a minute, anyway. It was too early to go meet up with her sister yet.
"I'll go if you want the company," Karen replied, shrugging a bit. "It's not like we're busy here right now."
"Sure, thanks." Bianca got to her feet and stretched briefly, working a kink out of her neck and rolling her shoulders. "Whenever you're ready, then."
Karen nodded, standing up and straightening her skirt.
"We're going to run out and pick up some more coffee," she said as they passed Foggy's desk. "We're about to run out." |
"Okay," Foggy agreed without thinking. Then that actually registered. "Bring back bagels!"
Bianca snorted at him. |
Karen just smiled fondly and ushered Bianca out the door.
"There's a bagel place on the corner," she commented as they got outside. "We'll pass right by it." |
"Good thing for him." Bianca grinned. "Think that factored in to choosing this spot for the office?" She glanced at Karen as they walked.
"Actually, no," Karen replied as they went. "It was the only one they could afford, at the time. I think it still might be, with rent in the city going up again."
