"Well I could have handled it...thank you though." Lori gave him a half smile. "How's your partner?" she asked heading back for the main streets Cas following like a lost puppy.
Since he was going the same way anyway, Cal followed. "Partner? Oh, you mean my brother. The doctor is keeping him overnight. He says there's no internal bleeding, but he's bruised up good. He'll need bed rest." He answered, worry flashing in his eyes. "I need to go back and check on him when I finish up this next job. He was asleep when I left, knocked out from the pain medication."
"I'll say a pray from his fast recovery." Lori smiled and glanced at Cas sighing a little. "What am I going to do with him?" she wasn't asking him just wondering out loud. "Thanks again for sticking up for me." she slipped inside the inn hunting down her sister. "Look what followed me home."
"Thanks. I appreciate it." Cal shrugged. "I'll let you know if I think of something." He answered. Before they reached the inn, he turned off on his way to his next job, giving Lori a half wave as he went.
Rosemary looked up when she heard someone entering the inn, expecting her sister to show up soon. She was so shocked by who she saw that she dropped her apron, which she had been in the process of hanging up. "Oh my God." She muttered. "Why is he here? How did he find us? Make him leave!" She looked panicked. |
"I don't know how he found us but if we let him go he'll tell where we are. I can just tell." Lori sighed watching Cas examine the inn with interest. "What on earth are we going to do?"
Rosemary gave a dark smile. "Okay so here's the plan. You lure him out behind the inn, and I'll come up from behind and hit him over the head. We'll tie him up, blindfold him and bring him somewhere far away where there's no chance he'll ever find his way back, and leave him there out in the forest somewhere to fend for himself." She talked as if she'd had a plan like this in place for a while.
"Rosey." Lori said in a scolding voice. "Lets at least bring him to a town. Besides if he found this place once he can find it again." she sighed. "You know if you ask I'll just leave. I'm not going to tell anyone I promise on my honor." Cas sighed having over heard them.
Rosemary pouted. "He won't find his way back from a forest." She mumbled. She looked up at the prince and scowled. "On your honor? Why in the world should I trust your honor? You already tracked us down when we clearly didn't want to be found. You're probably working for our parents. You were flirting with me when we danced, even though you were engaged to my sister. Your so-called honor means nothing. You have no honor. If you're going to promise, then promise on something that actually matters, like your life. Except, of course, that doesn't matter, either. Even if you broke your "promise," it's not like we'd be able to do anything about it. We'd be dragged back to that castle and kept under lock and key, and you and your honor would get away with it scott-free. There are no consequences for you if you told, but there are plenty of consequences if you return without news of us. You have far too many reasons to rat us out and no reason at all to leave us alone. So no, I won't trust you. I won't believe your fake promise on your nonexistent honor. I would rather just take a knife to the back of your neck and eliminate the threat for good. You should be glad we're only discussing getting you lost."
"You have no idea what I'm like." Cas glared at her. "I was not flirting. You must be desperate to hate me if you call that flirting." he growled. "And yes I went after you. No one knew what had happened. We thought you had been kidnapped or worse." he sighed. "And there wouldn't be consequences...who would know but me that I was even here? I wouldn't get in trouble and it's not like I don't know how you both feel. I respect your chose but I chose my kingdom over my own happiness." he looked to Lori. "Do you want me to leave?" Lori stared at him for a moment. "yes but you can't say anything about seeing us." "I know your safe that all that mattered to me. I wont sat a word." Cas smiled. Lori nodded "Fine. Leave and never come after us again. If I want to go back I'll find you." Cas nodded bowed then left.
Rosemary growled. "You are a liar. Obviously if you told, everyone would know where we are. You just made my point for me. Of course you wouldn't get in trouble! That's the point! You would be hailed as a hero while we were treated like errant children! If you truly believe anyone thought we were kidnapped, then you're a fool." She fought to keep her voice from rising. Shocked, she watched as Lori let the prince walk away. She rounded on her sister. "Why did you let him go? His promise is worth nothing! You know he won't keep it! How could you possibly trust that lying idiot? I thought you were smarter than that! You've just doomed us both, and what's worse, you did it without my permission! That was not your decision to make alone, Lori! You knew how I felt about it and you ignored me, you just went over my head like I'm just a child. Just like our parents! I trusted you! I thought you would be the one person who would never simply ignore me and act like them. But you're just like them, aren't you? You don't really value my opinion. You just humor me and then wave me off as if nothing I say has any meaning. How dare you treat me like a child? How dare you make that decision for both of us? You...you betrayed me. Why don't you just go back home? It's obvious you don't value your freedom. You're just another pawn for our parents to use. You never wanted to leave in the first place. Go on and leave, then! Go running back to them, let them marry you off to a man you don't love. Live your whole life as a slave to their demands, and don't ever look for me. Don't ever think of me. Don't ever expect to see your nieces and nephews. Just forget I existed. It's better that way, isn't it? If everyone simply forgets the misbehaved princess. Pretend you were an only child. Just like mother and father wanted." She glared at her sister with a look of anger that she had never directed at her before, then spun around and ran out of the inn.
"Rosemary! Rose wait!" Lori caught her arm. "How dare you compare me to them! You know better then that or you should but I guess are how childhood didn't happen! I'm not letting him just leave. I'm not that stupid! Do you think I'm really that much of a fool? Or do you want to get rid of me that bad?" she glanced around. "I am going to make sure he never gets back but I couldn't exactly tell you my plan right in front of him. But I'm such a puppet I guess it doesn't matter what I say! I'm going back then and live in misery so you can live the life you want." she dropped her arm. "Or do you want to kill me as well so I can't tell them where you are since you trust me so little."
Rosemary tried to pull away, but there wasn't any strength behind the motion. She didn't turn to look at Lori, not wanting her sister to see her tears. "If you had that kind of plan, why wouldn't you tell me about it? You acted like you were taking his side. You could have found a way to tell me. What about the code we made up as kids? You could've used it to give me a clue." She sniffled. "I don't want you to leave. Of course I don't. But I don't want to force you to stay, either. If you're not happy here, I won't make you stay with me."
"I haven't even had a chance to not be happy here." Lori sighed. "I don't want to kill him." she swallowed then took a breath. "I need to tell you something." she told her about Cal standing up for her.
Rosemary listened, a little surprised. "He really did that? But...that doesn't make any sense. I thought he was...I mean, he came across as a slimeball. That's so strange." She sighed. "Well, I don't see how it changes anything, anyway. So one time he decided not to be a creep. That doesn't mean we can trust him."
"Agreed." Lori nodded. "It was strange." she sighed then shrugged. "That's figure out how to kill Cas or at least make him lose his way back to the kingdom. This makes us terrible people doesn't it?"
Rosemary frowned. She didn't want to think of herself or Lori that way. "Protecting ourselves doesn't make us bad." She said, though she felt like it was wrong. "Anyway, it doesn't matter. We don't have a choice."
"I want to avoid directly killing him if we can." Lori squared her shoulders. "All we have to to is spook the horse deep enough in to the woods and he'll be stuck."
Rosemary nodded. "I still think we should try to knock him out if we can. If he's aware while the horse is running, he might be able to find his way back. But if he's unconscious, he'll have no idea where he is." She said.
"I don't think we could lift him though." Lori sighed a little. "We could certainly try."
Rosemary shrugged. "All I ask is that we try." She said. Heading for the door once again, she looked back to see if her sister was following. "We'd better move quickly if we want to catch up with him."
Lori followed after her sister careful to make sure they weren't followed. Cas glanced at them then sighed. "Change you mind already?" "no just wanted to make sure you got on yourway alright." Lori decided to distract him. "As you can see it's going fine." Cas snorted.
Along the way, Rosemary had picked up a sizeable rock that she now had hidden in a pocket of her dress. She made sure Cas only saw Lori, hiding herself in the foliage. While Lori distracted him, Rosemary took aim and threw the rock. If it hit, it would hit either his head, which would knock him out, or his back, which hopefully would spook the horse.
Cas gasped in shock as it struck him in the head. "Wha?" he hit the ground with a thum. Lori grimaced "That had to hurt." she sighed. "Well now what?" she frowned a little.
Even Rosemary flinched when the prince hit the ground. "Now we drag him deep into the forest and leave him. We'll at least bring the horse along, but we won't tie it up so it can run back home if it wants to. Then we get out of there and hope that when he wakes up he won't know how to get home...or, if we're lucky, that blow to the head will make him forget he even saw us."
"Right." Lori grabbed the arms. "Ready when you are." she grunted. "God he's heavy."
