Merlin glanced at Harry once Callie had left.
"Thoughts?" he asked. "I'm going to reserve judgement until after her assessment," Harry replied. Elsewhere, Valerie was getting comfortable on the quinjet, heading back to SHIELD. She was wearing one of her bespoke suits this time, instead of one of Callie's catsuits, and she was flipping through some things on her phone. |
Clint was up in the pilot seat, as was Natasha. Phil, however, was sitting back with Valerie.
"I won't give you any assignments immediately," he told Valerie. "We'll give you a couple days to settle in and get baselines on your physical status." |
Valerie nodded.
"No problem," she said. She had expected as much. She grinned. "Will I still be allowed to shoot rubber bands at Clint?" |
"That depends," Phil said. "If he lets you, yes. If he tries to shoot you back, maybe." He shrugged a little. "We'll see how he responds. Would you be comfortable staying in your sister's apartment?"
"Is that code for 'we don't have any other place to put you now that you're not pretending to be her'?" Valerie asked carefully.
"That's code for 'you can stay in her apartment or we can give you a bed in the barracks with the rest of the new recruits'," Phil told her, voice bland. "We have plenty of places to put you, but none of them are as nice as Callie's apartment, I'm sure."
"You're probably right," Valerie said, nodding. "Her apartment will be fine."
Phil nodded. That was easier for now, after all. "We'll be landing in another few hours," he told her. "After that, you'll have a couple days to adjust, and then we'll have you come in for a full physical."
"Alright," Valerie said, nodding. "Any ground rules I need to be aware of, aside from not feeding the gremlins after midnight?"
"You'll get your own copy of the Handbook, and the Agent Barton Guide," Phil told her. "Read both carefully. If you are as adept as your sister, you'll be seeing a lot of Barton."
"The Agent Barton Guide?" Valerie asked, hiding a snicker behind her hand. "Really? That's a necessary thing?"
"Yes it is," Phil said with a long-suffering sigh. "Callie and I put it together over the past couple years."
Valerie snickered.
"That's great," she said. "I think I handled Agent Barton fairly well last time, though, didn't I?" |
"Pretending to be your sister, yes," Phil agreed. "But you won't have the same job she did now."
"I know," Valerie replied. "Though I'm still not sure what I'll be doing, I assume I'll get my job description after my physical?"
"Exactly," Phil agreed with a nod. "We'll determine where is best to place you in a few days."
"Alright," Valerie said, nodding a bit. That made sense.
"Feel free to come to me with any questions you have," Phil told her. "At any point."
Valerie nodded.
"Will do, sir," she said. |
Phil nodded and went back to his reports for now. They had time, after all.
A few days later, Merlin was putting Callie through her paces.
"Excellent work, lass," he commented as she finished her last lap run. |
Callie shot him a brief grin, taking a moment to catch her breath and cool off a bit.
"Thanks," she murmured. "Not too different from SHIELD, in this respect." |
Merlin raised an eyebrow.
"Ah, so Agent Coulson gave you the parachute test, then, did he?" he asked, a shadow of a smirk on his face. |
"No," Callie allowed. "But Clint did push me out of a quinjet once." She shrugged. Clearly this kind of thing was not unheard of with Clint. "I nearly killed him for it. He still says it was worth it."
"Sounds like he'd get on famously with Eggsy," Merlin murmured. He checked his tablet. "Alright, so we can skip the parachute test... You're not getting the dog test, you're not trying out for Knighthood... No need for the U-bend test... Seems all that's left is to test your marksmanship."
