Valerie nodded.
"Just say the word, sir," she said. "Indeed," Merlin replied. "Teatime is a real and important time of day. I'm sure you'll come to value it as well." |
"If you feel you're ready, I can start going over them." He raised his eyebrows in question.
"Oh I'm sure I will," Callie agreed with a bit of a grin. "Pretty sure you're going to feed my tea addiction. You plural, by the way." |
"There's only so ready I can be, sir," Valerie pointed out. She grinned a bit. "Bring it on."
"I didn't expect anything less," Merlin said, smirking a bit. "Your sister was the same." |
Coulson chuckled quietly but nodded. "Very well," he agreed. "Let's begin, then."
"Oh I know, she was constantly bragging about the tea here." Callie rolled her eyes. |
A week or so later, Valerie found herself back at Shield headquarters. Thor had come back to Earth, and apparently he didn't come alone. She hadn't been given all of the details yet, but Coulson had evidently decided that this was an excellent time to test how she reacted in unfamiliar situations, so there she was waiting to see what was going on.
Elsewhere, Harry was starting to make noises about going out to see what he could dig up on the organization that had tried to kidnap Callie and Valerie. It had already been left to sit too long, in his opinion, and he wanted to get to work tracking them down. |
Coulson was standing with her, just waiting for now. He received a text from Natasha and nodded.
"Time to go," he told Valerie quietly, leading the way to the elevators. Callie wasn't dissuading him, because she knew that Harry was a more active Arthur, but she was keeping an eye on him. "So, what's the current plan, sir?" she asked, quirking an eyebrow at him as she brought him a cup of tea. She'd learned very quickly how he took it. |
"Yes, sir," Valerie said, following him. She was interested to see what was going on that was so secret Natasha was in on it.
"We need to ferret out the mole," Harry said. He studied one of the screens in front of him, his pair of Kingsman glasses folded neatly next to the teacup. "I'm certain we have one; there is no way for someone to have gotten into Merlin's computer systems otherwise. So someone within Kingsmen is a traitor, and I want to know who." |
Coulson was quiet the entire way to Stark Tower. And then instead of going up to one of the main Avengers floor, he hit a button for a sub-basement level.
"Tony built this area in case of emergency," he told her. "I believe basically just for this situation. He even called in Doctor Strange." "Which means we need to get them to reveal themselves, somehow," Callie murmured contemplatively, leaning back a bit. "Maybe some kind of bait, something they can't resist?" |
That made Valerie's eyebrows go up.
"He called in Stange?" she asked. "But he can't stand Strange. What's going on that he would rather tolerate someone he can't stand?" "It may yet come to that," Harry said. "First, though, I want to go around and observe the staff. They are more likely than the Knights to be a plant, and are more likely to slip up under pressure." |
Coulson sighed. "Something we'd hoped wouldn't happen," he said cryptically, exiting the elevator as the doors opened. Already, a few people were there, including Thor. The normally jovial man looked very tired, watching his brother pace the cell made just for him.
Callie nodded. "I'll poke around a bit, too," she agreed. "There aren't many people who know me yet, I know Val knew some people but not a ton. They might be more willing to talk around me." |
Valerie hesitated just slightly when the door opened. She had definitely not signed up for looking after a captive trickster god. Then she straightened her jacket and walked out with Coulson, looking around to see if she could get a feel for the situation.
Thor looked over when the elevator opened. "Son of Coul," he greeted. "You're here more quickly than I expected." Harry studied her for a moment and then nodded. "Let me know what you find out," he said. "Be careful." |
Coulson smiled faintly. "I made sure I could get here," he said. "What's going on?" He left the question open and his tone bland, not blaming Thor for any of this.
"Will do." Callie nodded once. "You as well. I really don't want to explain to Merlin how you got jumped at HQ." She grinned a bit. |
"It was decided that it was no longer wise for my brother to remain on Asgard," Thor replied. Even his tone was weary. "I was instructed to bring him to Midgard, and he is now my responsibility to bear."
"If anyone is able to get the jump on me here, then I deserve the beating," Harry said. He waved a hand. "Go on. Check in with me periodically. And let Merlin know that I'm onto his plot. I don't need a nanny." |
Coulson nodded. "We'll help," he murmured. "You won't be alone in this." Unfortunately, that was about the best he could offer.
Callie grinned. "I'm not a nanny," she said. "Unless you're saying you're as bad as Clint. In which case I kinda am." She winked at him and promptly fled before she could get in trouble, still grinning. He was rather fun, now that he was beginning to loosen up around her. |
"My thanks," Thor responded. He closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them, he noticed Valerie and blinked. "Ah. Your... apprentice?"
Harry just let her go, rolling his eyes a little and starting to dig into the backgrounds of the various Kingsman staff. |
Coulson smiled. "Of a sort," he agreed. "Valerie, this is Thor. Thor, this is Valerie." He nodded between the two of them, ushering Valerie closer.
Callie started snooping around, although she did at some point pull out her phone to text Merlin (because that was totally a thing now). Harry says he doesn't need a nanny and is onto your plot. Fair warning. |
Valerie stepped forward, nodding once.
"Valerie Simmons, Kingsman liaison to Shield," she introduced herself. Merlin glanced at the text and snorted a bit. Harry says a lot of things. Sometimes he's even right. This is not one of those times. |
"Kingsman?" Thor tilted his head to the side. "I don't believe I've heard of this group."
"They're quite interesting," Coulson said with a faint devious smile. "I'll give you some reading on them later, if you want." Thor nodded, looking curious still. Oh I told him I'm not his nanny, unless he wants to be put on the same level as Clint. Callie grinned as she settled into one of the work areas, just listening in on various conversations. |
"Short version is that Kingsman is a similar sort of save-the-world agency as Shield," Valerie said. "Based in England."
Merlin couldn't help but snort softly at that as he went back to his work. |
Thor nodded. "And where is Callie?" he asked. She didn't always accompany Coulson, but more often than not she did.
Callie spent the day in support staff areas, just listening in on conversations and keeping herself out of the way. By the end of the day, however, she had little to report, and headed back up to Arthur's office to tell him so. |
"Callie is now the Shield liaison to Kingsman," Valerie replied. "My counterpart back in England."
Harry wasn't entirely surprised. "Well we can hardly expect them to shout it from the rooftops, now can we?" he said when she gave her report. |
Thor smiled. "Indeed? This is excellent for her. So long as they are treating her well." There was a hint of threat in his voice there. He rather liked Callie, after all.
"Of course not," Callie agreed. "I suspect it'll take a while to find anything, especially since I'm not sure who exactly I should be focusing on." She shrugged a bit. |
"I'm sure my sister is having a great time," Valerie replied, grinning a bit. "She's made friends already."
"I'm working on that myself," Harry responded. "So far, I've made a list of several persons of interest amongst the staff." |
Thor nodded his acceptance of that. That was acceptable, after all.
"Several?" Callie's eyebrows shot up at that, because that sounded rather extreme. |
Once Thor was appeased, Valerie glanced at Coulson, giving him a 'so what next?' look.
"Everyone not personally recruited and vetted by one of the current Knights, or Merlin," Harry replied as he noted down another name. "Not nearly as many as I'm assuming you imagine. Perhaps six or seven." |
