Xavier nodded after a moment. "Indeed there is," he agreed. "Ororo made sandwiches. Or supervised their making." He smiled, and started for the door, giving Steve and Bucky a bit of time to decide if they wanted to come or not.
Steve looked at Bucky and quirked an eyebrow. Well, they could always eat, but Bucky didn't always want to. So he left it up to his friend. |
Mavin grinned a bit.
"Well, if Ororo supervised, I'm sure they're great," she said. Bucky just shrugged. He didn't care one way or the other if they went to get sandwiches or not. The Soldier had learned a long time ago to ignore hunger, so he didn't notice anymore if he wanted food. |
Xavier smiled at that and headed for the kitchen.
Steve nodded after a moment and nudged him gently. "Come on," he murmured. "We could both use a snack, I think." |
"Yeah, sure," Bucky said, standing up.
Mavin nudged her sister and tilted her head towards the kitchen. Lunch was a good idea. |
Steve followed Xavier back to the kitchen, keeping close to Bucky for now.
Lucy raised her eyebrows at Mavin but nodded after a moment and trailed after the others to the kitchen. She did keep herself out of the way, though, and as much out of Steve's line of sight as possible. |
Mavin, however, stepped right into the chaos that was lunchtime at the mansion, and managed to step back out again with two plates, stacked with sandwiches. She handed one to Lucy, for her and the professor, and handed the other to Steve for him and Bucky.
"Lunch is ready," she commented. She glanced around for a moment. Nope, no Kurt, which meant that the teleporter was still elsewhere in the mansion on babysitting detail. |
"Thanks," Steve said, shooting her a quick smile and setting the plate between him and Bucky.
Lucy smiled and set her plate down, half-hiding from Steve. He made her very nervous. |
"No problem," Mavin said, going back and snagging a sandwich for herself. "This way you don't have to brave the chaos."
"This isn't too bad," Steve said, eyeing the chaos. "Clint creates about half thus amount of chaos on his own."
"Really?" Mavin said. She grinned a bit. "He'd probably fit right in around here, then."
"I'm sure he would," Steve agreed. "I'm also sure that's more trouble than I'm willing to deal with." He smiled though.
"I'd imagine so," Mavin said, nodding. "I'm used to this chaos, since I spent most of my teens and all of my adult life here, but I have no doubt that it's a lot for other people to handle."
Steve shrugged. "I'm more used to this. Bucky is getting used to it again. The Army was pretty similar in free time." He looked at her, raising an eyebrow. "I thought you would have your own apartment closer to your work?"
"I do," Mavin said, nodding. "But I spend a lot of time here, as well. I act as an adult chaperone for the kids, when I can, and it's just nice to come here and be away from... people." That, and she had an entire mansion full of potential babysitters, but he didn't need to know that.
Steve nodded. He could understand that. "Well, at least you can come here," he said. "It seems like a good place to be, from what I've seen."
Mavin nodded.
"It is," she said. "I mean, don't get me wrong, it gets crazy around here." She sighed a bit. "But it's nice, knowing I've got somewhere to come back to, if I need it. The Professor makes sure we have a place go to." |
Steve nodded. "Sounds nice," he agreed. "Tony's done something similar for us, gave us all rooms in the tower if we need 'em." He shrugged a bit. "Dunno if I'd stay there full time, but it's nice sometimes."
"Really?" Mavin asked, a little surprise creeping into her tone. "Huh. I guess I should have expected something like that, he's nicer than he likes to let on."
"He is," Steve agreed. Then he paused and looked at her. "How do you know that? That's not public knowledge."
Mavin blinked.
"Oh," she said. "Sorry, I didn't realize. He drops in here at the mansion every so often, he knows the Professor." She didn't mention that Tony had an x-gene, since she didn't know who he had told and who he hadn't, but it was still true that he and Xavier knew one another. |
Steve nodded, a look of realization crossing his face. "So this is one of the places he vanishes to," he murmured. "We've got a running bet between the team. We all know Malibu, but there are a couple other places we know he goes. This must be one."
"Vanishes to?" Mavin asked, raising an eyebrow. "Like he just... up and walks out?"
"Pretty much," Steve agreed with a little shrug. "Sometimes he tells people, sometimes he doesn't. Just leaves when the mood strikes him. I think the longest he was gone was about a month."
"Interesting," Mavin mused. She made a mental note to poke Tony about that next time he showed up. "Well, now you know, he comes here."
Steve nodded. "Good to know," he agreed. "Have you met anyone else from the team?"
