"It does make sense," Steve agreed, watching her a little more intently. "It's a good conclusion, and we can plan around that."
Mavin nodded.
"But it brings us back to the fact that I can't think of anyone sufficiently unbiased enough to trust with the demonstration," she pointed out. |
Steve nodded slowly. "We can work on that," he said after a moment. "The list is going to be fairly short."
"Very short," Mavin murmured. She pulled out a pen and shuffled a few papers around. "But we need to come up with someone, and quickly. The UN isn't going to want to let this sit."
Steve hesitated a moment before he glanced at T'Challa. "I'd trust you to," he said, quirking an eyebrow at him.
"But would they trust me to?" T'Challa asked, tilting his head towards Mavin, to indicate the UN as a whole. "It is known that I am already extending my protection to you, after all. Some would call that biased."
Steve huffed a bit at that and looked at Mavin. "Well? Think they'd accept him, or do we have to come up with another alternative?"
Mavin thought about it for a moment.
"I'm not sure," she admitted. "It's possible, given his influence as the sovereign of Wakanda, they might let him, but he still took a side in the whole thing, so they might still say he's too biased." |
"Which means any of the rest of the team is out, too." Steve frowned. There really wasn't much of anyone else he might trust.
"More than likely," Mavin agreed, nodding. "Not that General Ross is likely to approve any of the Avengers past or present, regardless."
"Right. So we need someone who's not involved and isn't affiliated. That takes out Pepper, too." Steve made a brief face at that.
"She might work as a last resort," Mavin commented, writing 'Virginia Potts' on her paper. "She's affiliated, but she didn't explicitly take a side, though it could be assumed she would side with Tony Stark."
Steve nodded. "Alright." He tapped his fingers against his thigh, glancing around.
T'Challa was the one to actually give the next suggestion. "Perhaps yourself, miss." He looked at Mavin. |
Mavin blinked.
"Me?" she asked. The suggestion seemed to come completely out of the blue. |
"You work for them, but you cannot be seen as biased," T'Challa pointed out. "You're not a high-ranking official, but you are not no one, either."
Steve was looking at her now, calculating, eyes narrowed a little. |
"You hardly know me," Mavin pointed out. "I doubt any of you could honestly say you trust me for something like this."
"You'd be right about that," Steve agreed, still looking at her. "But you're a better alternative than a lot of people they could try to force."
"Alright," Mavin said, reluctantly. She wrote her own name on the very short list.
Steve glanced over at Xavier before he made a face. Nope, again, biased. No one else was coming to mind.
"Well, looks like that's about it," he muttered, frowning still. |
And wasn't that mildly terrifying? But Mavin couldn't think of anyone else, either. She couldn't help but glance at them.
"Alright," she said. "Then I'll let the UN know." |
Steve nodded his acceptance of that. "Let us know when you hear back." It wasn't quite an order, and as close as he could come to a request in this situation.
Mavin nodded.
"Of course," she said. Tucking the papers back into her folder, she got up and walked out of the room, pulling out her phone. |
Steve let out a slow breath, closing his eyes for a moment. This was going to be a very long few days.
Mavin wasn't on the phone long. It was barely fifteen minutes before she came back into the room.
"The UN has agreed to your request regarding the test," she said to Steve. "The test is scheduled in a week." |
Steve nodded. "And who did they agree to?" he asked, because she hadn't volunteered that yet, and he had a feeling he knew what that meant.
