"I proposed both of your choices," Mavin said. She glanced at him. "It was decided that Ms. Potts is unsuitable for the test, given her relationship with Mr. Stark." She hesitated there, not sure how to appropriately word that the UN had allowed her to be the one for the test.
Steve nodded. He'd half expected that, really.
"And what did they say about you?" |
Mavin hesitated again.
"They agreed," she finally said. "I'm kind of surprised they did, actually." |
Steve nodded. Alright, he could work with this.
"Alright," he agreed. "How much time do we have?" |
"A few days," Mavin said, glancing at the notes she took during the phone call. "They want the test in exactly a week."
Steve swore quietly at that. "That's not much time," he muttered, frowning and looking at Bucky again.
"I think that's the point," Mavin ventured. "I doubt they want you to have any time to put something together." She made a bit of a face. "As if you could fake something like this."
Steve grimaced. "Sounds like something they'd do," he agreed. This was part of the reason why he'd refused to support the Sokovia Accords in the first place.
"Yeah," Mavin said, nodding. "So. A week. That'll be fun." She made a bit of a face.
Steve was quiet for a few moments before he sighed.
"Guess we need to make a few preparations," he muttered. |
"How can I help?" Mavin asked. She wanted to make things as easy as possible.
"Just give me a few hours to get what I need," Steve told her after a few moments. "I'll tell you when I've got the phrases for you."
Mavin nodded. She'd heard a little about the trigger sequence, though she had no idea what it was.
"I should go and find Lucy and the professor," she said. "I can't imagine the UN objecting to them being there after the demonstration is over." |
Steve nodded. "Alright," he agreed. He had some things to work on, after all.
Mavin nodded and went to find her sister. She had no idea where Lucy would be, but that just meant that she got to wander around a little, first.
Lucy and the professor had moved to another, quieter room, since they had some planning to do now as well.
"Are you sure me going with is a good idea?" Lucy asked quietly. |
"I believe it is," Xavier replied, nodding. "Just in case things don't go quite as planned, I would like you there to diffuse any escalating situations."
"Alright," Lucy agreed after a moment. "I can manage that." Probably. Hopefully. Although she'd prefer if she didn't even have to use her mutation in the first place.
"You need to have a little more faith in yourself," Xavier said gently. "You're certainly more capable than you believe you are."
Lucy made a brief face at him. "Yeah, well, we don't really know that do we?" she asked, mostly rhetorically.
Xavier just smiled and didn't respond.
There was a soft knock on the door, and Mavin poked her head in. "Mind if I come in?" she asked. |
"Come on in," Lucy agreed, shooting her a smile. "Everything going okay so far?"
"Okay enough," Mavin said, walking in and closing the door behind her again. "About as okay as the situation can be, at least."
"Well, that's something." Lucy huffed a bit. "So, what's the word at this point?"
"Well," Mavin said with a sigh, "the UN is giving us a week to get back and do the demonstration. They won't let anyone even remotely connected to the Avengers do the test, so I have to do it, that's going to be interesting." She sat down next to her sister. "You know, I thought I made some pretty good life choices in the last few years. What happened?"
