Hiei raised an eyebrow at her. "Hn." He caught her gaze for a few moments as he used his Jagan to peer into her mind, curious and assessing. Nothing there told him she was any kind of a risk, which he'd guessed. But he also couldn't just peruse everything, and he could tell there were things he couldn't tell yet, which irked him a bit. That, and he still didn't know how she knew so much about him and Kurama.
Winter could see the faint glow of the Jagan under the headband and her eyes went a bit wide. She couldn't help the 'shit that's the Jagan he's in my head' that burst across her thoughts, and she couldn't bring herself to look away again.
Hiei's eyes narrowed a little at that. She shouldn't be able to even see the Jagan unless she was sensitive, and she'd given no indication so far to indicate that. He broke eye contact, looking away again. He had things to mull over now.
As soon as he broke eye contact again, Winter took a step back.
"I'm... going to go back inside," she said cautiously. "Enjoy your balcony." She fled back through the door without waiting for a response. |
Hiei snorted quietly but didn't respond, already busy with his own thoughts. He had the feeling things were going to be interesting for a while now.
Winter scrambled back inside and onto the couch bed. She wasn't sure if Peggy was awake or not, and she didn't care. It was best that she was inside for the moment.
Peggy was awake, kind of, but she didn't ask. Winter looked spooked, and sometimes time was better than immediate prodding. So she just curled up and went to sleep.
Fortunately, there was coffee to be had in the morning, and Peggy availed herself of it, still looking half-dead. |
Winter also accepted some coffee, moving over out of the way once she had some.
"I hope the couch was alright," Kurama said once the two were working on their drinks. |
"Yeah, it was fine," Peggy said, settling into her chair a little more. "Slept fine all night."
"That's good to hear," Kurama replied. "Please, feel free to use the shower, if you'd like. I'll call Yusuke in a little while and remind him of his... obligation."
"Great." Peggy hunched a little over her coffee, blinking a few times to try and make herself more cognizant. It wasn't working very well.
Kurama left the two in the kitchen to wake up a bit more. He made his way to the balcony, under the pretense of watering the plants out there, and glanced around to see if Hiei was still there.
Hiei hadn't gone far, just to the tree a little ways away. It made for a better sleeping perch, after all. He did open one eye when Kurama came out though.
"Your visitors know too much," he said, though he didn't move from his comfortable perch. |
"I take it you got some information, then?" Kurama asked as he checked the plants on the balcony. "What did you find?"
"They know about us," Hiei said. "I couldn't find out how, yet, but they know about us, about the Dark Tournament. The one at least knew about the Jagan, even." He paused for a moment. "And she could see it."
"That is worrisome," Kurama agreed. "There could be quite a lot that they know, and we don't know the extent of it yet." He glanced at his friend. "I assume you're going to follow them for a while and try to find out more?"
"Of course. They're liabilities." Hiei frowned. "We don't even know where they came from." He crossed his arms over his chest.
"I never said they weren't," Kurama pointed out. He was quiet for a moment. "I'm going to make Yusuke come and get them today, regardless. Perhaps they will be more open with him, he tends to have that effect on people."
"Yes, he does," Hiei agreed. He knew he didn't have to tell Kurama that he would follow them. "I won't be surprised if I see you snooping either, fox." He smirked a bit at the ribbing.
"You would be disappointed if I didn't," Kurama replied easily, returning the smirk.
Hiei just snorted quietly and didn't bother to refute that. They both knew Kurama was right, after all.
"Better go call the detective before he finds an excuse to leave them here longer." |
"Indeed," Kurama sighed. "Of course, he'll likely not pick up, in which case I'll contact Keiko instead." Because they all knew how effectively Keiko was able to corral Yusuke.
Hiei snickered a little at the detective's upcoming misfortune, because he never missed an opportunity to laugh at Yusuke if he could help it.
Kurama didn't comment on the snickering. It was harmless, for the most part.
Inside, Winter was a bit more awake after the coffee. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but I kind of can't wait to be out of here," she said quietly to Peggy. "Like, it's not even HERE that's the problem, I just... want some space to catch my breath and make peace with everything." |
"No kidding," Peggy muttered. "This all takes time, I need some time to adjust, and we haven't had any yet." She grimaced a bit and washed out their coffee cups.
