Amaryllis sighed. "I should be well by now," she grumbled, picking at a loose thread in her blanket.
Kili grinned a bit. "Once I can get my hands on some yarn," he agreed. "Might take me a day or two." |
"From what I hear from Dale, the sickness is one that lingers," Fili said. "Many of the townspeople are still trying to shake the coughing."
Hyacinth nodded. "Alright," she said. "Perhaps once I've gotten rid of this illness I will venture out to the market again, I'd like to take a proper look around and see what they offer." |
Amaryllis made a face. "Wonderful," she murmured. "The lingering cough is the worst. We had a case go around the Shire several years back, one winter."
Kili nodded. "Once you're well," he agreed. "Don't want to push yourself too hard and get sick again." |
"Just rest and drink your tea," Fili said. "It will pass."
Hyacinth just nodded and settled back again, relaxing. She drifted off to sleep quickly. |
Amaryllis huffed a bit. "I know," she murmured. "Doesn't mean I have to like it."
Kili settled in there for a while to just keep watch. |
"I know," Fili said. "Believe me, I know how it feels to be restless."
Amaryllis huffed but settled down a bit after that. "Sorry I'm keeping you," she murmured. "I'm sure you have stuff you need to be doing, not babysitting a silly hobbit."
"It's no trouble, I assure you," Fili said, shaking his head a bit. "I'm sure someone would have come to fetch me by now if my attention were needed elsewhere."
Amaryllis nodded after a moment. "Alright," she agreed quietly. "Thank you, for all this."
"I'm glad to help," Fili said, smiling at bit. "Go ahead and get some rest."
Amaryllis smiled and finally settled in to follow his advice and take a bit of a nap.
Amaryllis was sick for another few days after that, and Hyacinth for several. They did both eventually recover, but it was slow, and the coughs still lingered after everything else had passed. But they did feel well enough to venture back out into the rest of the mountain.
So, naturally, to celebrate them feeling well again, the company held a party dinner for them. Which was also a way to get information from them, because while Fili and Kili had explained what the girls said, the company still had questions.
Amaryllis watched with much amusement as the company set the table and took care of everything. She and Hyacinth had been ushered into chairs and told that they still had to rest. |
Hyacinth just rolled her eyes when she was tucked into a chair and told not to get up.
"I promise, we're fine," she said as she watched the company bustle about. |
Amaryllis grinned. "Well, if they want to do all the work," she pointed out with a grin. "Shouldn't argue with them, should we?"
"It feels odd, not being the one preparing a meal," Hyacinth said. She smiled a bit. "I can only imagine what I could do with stone hearths and ovens. Think of the roasts, and the potatoes, and the vegetables I could make."
"Mmm I know. Oh, good breads, too." Amaryllis grinned. "Once they stop fussing we'll have to take over a kitchen."
"Yes, yes we do," Hyacinth said. She glanced around. "It's obvious they have questions for us. Who do you think will come to us first?"
"I'm not sure," Amaryllis said after a moment. "They may send Fili and Kili again."
"You would think they would be tired of us by now," Hyacinth said. She sighed, and made a face when it turned into a couple of light coughs.
"Apparently not yet." Amaryllis shrugged a bit, and waved off Bofur, who was looking at them like he wasn't sure if they needed anything or not. He grinned a bit at being caught but backed off again without protest. "I like that one, he's sensible."
"Sensible is always a good thing," Hyacinth agreed. "Although we're not really the ones who should be waited on." She sent a pointed look to where Bilbo was sitting with Thorin.
"And look, Thorin is hardly letting him do anything for himself," Amaryllis pointed out with a grin. Bilbo was indeed looking put-out and Thorin was fussing over him a bit.
Hyacinth grinned.
"Good," she said. She fidgeted a bit with one of the table linens. "I wish I could have brought my basket, if I'm going to be sitting here I'd rather be working on the blanket. At this rate, I'll never finish before the babe arrives." |
"You will," Amaryllis soothed. "You'll finish on time. Besides, it looks like things are almost ready." She nodded at the table, which looked all set up. The dwarves were starting to sit and settle in as well.
Kili looked for a moment at the set up before he sat on Hyacinth's free side. |
