Sirius and James went out to the Shrieking Shack a little after Remus, making sure nobody was following them. By now, Remus's wolf knew them both, and so they weren't worried about being attacked as they went into the shack.
Cat had to collect the potions ingredients that night. But once she got them, and had put them away with her other supplies, she glanced out towards the tree. "Think I should go out?" she asked Olive, leaning against the chair her cousin was sitting in. She'd gone to the Hufflepuff common room to see what her cousin was doing, and to get Olive's opinion. |
Olivia was quiet for a moment. "It's... kind of up to you," she said eventually. "You can, and you'd probably be fine as a cat. But it's the probably that worries me." She shrugged.
"I'll be careful," Cat said. She didn't immediately get up. "I kind of want to go and see, and dawn is hours away yet and tomorrow is Saturday, so no classes. So I don't have to get up early for anything."
"Right. Which is good, because knowing you, you won't be back for hours." Olivia smiled a bit. "Just don't piss off the others too much and you should be okay. You know how to be smart, and I know you're curious."
"I'll try not to piss off Black," Cat said with a slight eyeroll. "No promises about Potter." She grinned. "And only because you like Black."
Olive snorted quietly. "Doesn't mean you have to go easy on him," she pointed out with a bit of a grin. "He's well aware I can and will curse him, given cause."
"Good, he'd better be aware of that," Cat said, grinning. She gave her cousin a side hug. "Alright. I'm going to go out. I'll be back later. I'll check in with you when I'm back in the tower. The password isn't changing tonight is it?"
"No, not tonight," Olive confirmed after a quick mental check. "You've still got a few days. Go, have fun, tell me when you're back." She grinned.
"Will do," Cat said. She grinned. "I'll bring you back a dead mouse or something." Getting up, she stretched and headed for the door. Time to sneak out of the castle and down to the fighting tree.
Olive snorted at her but settled in for the night. It would be a while before Cat came back, she knew.
Remus, meanwhile, was so far peaceable and quiet that night. |
Cat went quietly down the passage in the willow, small and black and furry. She looked around cautiously when she came to the inner room of the Shrieking Shack, making sure nothing was about to attack her. She went over when she caught sight of Black and Potter, creeping slowly along the wall and not making sudden moves.
Potter noticed her first, and he tossed his head but didn't actually object. Remus had told them both to behave, so he would. Unless she pissed off Remus.
Cat flicked her ears a bit, acknowledging Potter, and glanced at Black. She went over to them, not rubbing up affectionately but not deliberately ignoring them either. Then she looked around for Remus.
Remus was circling the other room, occasionally pausing to sniff at things as he made his circuit around the room. He hadn't noticed the cat yet.
Cat almost got up to cross his path, but instead crouched down near Black. She'd promised to be careful, after all, and putting herself in the way of a werewolf was not careful.
On his next round passing by the others, though, Remus paused. The wolf sniffed at the floor, following his nose over to Cat. Then he snorted and nudged Sirius in passing as he continued on his way.
When the wolf didn't do anything to her, Cat sat up and gave her face a quick wash. She could suppress most of a cat's urges, but she liked being clean. She was less nervous now that the wolf had more or less passed her by.
James snorted at all of them, though he was a bit more at ease now that he knew the cat wouldn't set off Remus. That was his real concern here, and he knew it was Sirius's, as well.
Once Cat was done cleaning herself off, she settled down into a loaf to just observe. She wasn't sure what all happened on the full moons, but she was certain everyone had to calm down and settle in at some point. It was already past midnight, after all.
Remus kept up his pacing, occasionally growling at things he heard outside, or playing a bit with Sirius or James. But by and large the wolf kept to himself. It was a fairly calm night.
Cat observed for a while, and ended up heading back out of the passage in the wee hours of the morning. The next day was Saturday, so she didn’t have to be up for classes, but she still didn’t want to spend the night in the Shrieking Shack. She snuck into the castle and straight back to the Slytherin dorms, already looking forward to collapsing into her bed. Before she did, she wrote a quick note to Olive, letting her know all was well, and charmed it into a folded butterfly, sending it towards the Hufflepuff girl’s dorm.
She slept in late the next morning, trudging down to the Great Hall towards the end of breakfast and setting herself down at the Slytherin table. |
The boys were conspicuously absent from the Gryffindor table, but no one seemed to mind. Olivia did wait until Cat had had a chance to get some food and tea, at least, before she made her way over to the Slytherin table and sat next to her.
"All good?" she asked, snagging a tea pot as it passed to pour herself another cup. |
Cat blinked when Olivia sat down next to her.
“Yeah, all good,” she replied. “I didn’t stay all night. But I’m absolutely exhausted, I don’t know how they do it all the time.” |
"Pretty sure they have potions stashed under their beds," Olive murmured. "Y'know, I didn't think of it at the time, but I saw Black in Herbology one day after a full moon. He looked kind of awful."
"I'm not surprised," Cat replied, covering a yawn. "Can't imagine how irritating today would be if there were classes."
