Glory thought for a moment, trying to figure out where to start looking for Betelgeuse.
"He always has to make things difficult..." she muttered. |
Honeydew's eyes darted around, curiously. Her eyesight hadn't depleted--it was probably the only sense of hers that hadn't been degraded from living in captivity. She didn't know where to start looking, either.
After a moment or two, Glory sighed.
"Come on," she said, "let's look around for a bit. He's bound to turn up at some point." |
Honeydew nodded, slowly, and patiently backed down to allow Glory to take the lead. Honeydew was much older than her, and had a biological right to lead. But she was unfamiliar with the ocean, sad as it was to say, and didn't want to lead.
Glory didn't go too far from the area, not wanting to be unable to find her way back again, though she poked around some of the other groups of rocks cautiously.
Honeydew followed her silently, staying close in case something happened. She was on-edge.
Back behind one of the farther, smaller, more treacherous-looking crops of rocks was a dark figure, curled up in a tight ball and taking a nap. A closer look revealed dark green scales. It was probably Betelgeuse, napping. |
Glory saw him behind the rocks. Figures he wouldn't have gone far...
"There he is," she murmured. Louder, she called, "Hey you, you can't not start trouble for once? Do you always have to be difficult?" |
"Go to hell," Betelgeuse retorted, sourly. He'd always been a sourpuss, so Honeydew wasn't surprised. She hadn't known him to be violent, though, so that must have started after she was gone.
"Age before beauty," Glory snapped, at the end of her patience with him. "Why do you have to be such an asshole?"
Betelgeuse's only response was a low, dangerous warning growl. He didn't even like being near her, since she was an 'abomination.' It was a technical term underwater as much as it was an insult.
Honeydew stayed behind, unsure of whether or not it was safe to approach him. |
"Fine, see if I ever help you again," Glory grumbled. "In case you actually still care, I'm not the only one who escaped."
His growls died down at once, but he didn't move from where he was. He was either in shock, or had suddenly become too skittish to move.
Skittish...he and Léan were much more alike than either of them would ever admit. |
"Good, I've gotten your attention," Glory said. She was out of patience for dealing with him. "Now if you would just turn around, my job would be done and I can go back." After a moment, she added, "and it would get me away from you."
Betelgeuse snorted, staying where he was.
Honeydew tugged on her arm slightly. "Let me deal with him," she murmured, quietly. "Go tend to Léan's arm...the extra time I need to calm him down will give you enough time to find something to do with his arm." |
"By all means," Glory said, moving out of her way. She didn't want to deal with Betelgeuse anymore. Turning, she headed back to the cave Léan was in.
Honeydew headed into the rock alcove, and softly began to work her magic. Betelgeuse had been quite a different person when she had been around.
Léan was curled up slightly, still shaking, holding his arm to his stomach. It was killing him, and he was in a whole lot of pain. But there wasn't anything he could do without proper medical help. |
"Hey," Glory said softly, going into the cave. She wanted to snuggle with him, but she knew that was a bad idea. She could tell he was in a lot of pain. "You need to get that arm taken care of, you can't make the trip home like this."
Léan looked up at her, eyes cloudy with pain. "There's nothing I can do for it...not here..." he lamented, softly. Splinting it was probably the only thing they could do without a doctor around. And there weren't any visible materials around.
"We need to do something," Glory said. "I just wish I knew what to do..." She had no idea how to patch up anything beyond some cuts and bruises, this was way out of her meager skill level.
Honeydew returned after a moment. Thankfully, she was alone. The first thing she did was give Léan a hug from the side, so she wouldn't disturb his arm.
Léan proceeded to cling to her for a few minutes. He had few memories of his mother, since she'd vanished when he'd been very young. |
Glory backed off respectfully, giving them both space. She wasn't going to intrude on the moment.
Honeydew backed off when Léan whimpered, arm shaking a bit more than it had been before. She glanced at Glory, looking concerned. "What should we do...?"
"I've been trying to figure that out," Glory replied. "It hasn't been working." She hated feeling so helpless, but she had no idea what to do.
"We could help him home. Just help pull him along. I'm not that strong, but I can try to help," Honeydew murmured, feeling bad about her depleted strength.
"That's what we may have to do," Glory agreed. "We might be able to find some help closer to home." The trip home would be slower than the trip out, but they would move as fast as they could.
