"I'm not all that fond of crabmeat," Glory admitted. "Never have been. I know what the crabbers go through to catch those crab, though. It's considered the most dangerous job in the world, especially the winter season."

Mira-Charma13 04-07-2010 04:29 AM

"If humans weren't so paranoid about interacting with other intelligent species..." Léan mused, "...then they could recruit some of my kind to capture crabs for them...but, of course..."

He nodded to himself. "I doubt that will ever happen. Less people would have to die that way. Are we going to head out? Are you sure you can carry me?"

Mageling 04-07-2010 04:31 AM

"Most humans think that they're the only sentient beings, I think," Glory said. She grinned when he asked if she could carry him. "I got you in here, didn't I? I think I can get you back outside."

Mira-Charma13 04-07-2010 04:32 AM

Léan hummed, privately agreeing.

At her outburst, he arched an eyebrow, grinning. "Shall I give you the 'you-drop-me-and-I'll...' warning again? Or do you remember?"

Mageling 04-07-2010 02:12 PM

"The sand is softer now that it's dry again," Glory teased. At his look, she grinned. "Nah, I remember. It's all good." Carefully, she lifted him from the tub, being careful of his cuts. Then she gradually made her way outside, making sure not to trip or stumble on anything that would make her drop him. "Where do you want me to put you?"

Mira-Charma13 04-07-2010 08:30 PM

"Right at the water would be good..." Léan mumbled, still not used to being carried or being touched. His cuts still seemed to bother him, but he kept his unspoken complaints to himself, eyes fixed on the ocean.

Mageling 04-07-2010 08:48 PM

"Alright," Glory replied. Carefully, she made her way to the water. Wading a foot or two in, she put him down as gently as she could. "There."

Mira-Charma13 04-07-2010 08:52 PM

Léan jumped a bit--the water stung a tad, as he had predicted, but he swam out a bit deeper, thankfully allowing his tail scales to regain their bluish sheen.

For a moment, he regained his bearings, diving up and under, looking content. Then, while he was underwater...

...something tackled him, out of nowhere.

There was a lot of strange chittering and chirping before both Léan and Archie resurfaced from the water--Léan looking grumpy about having the wind knocked out of him and Archie grinning happily. Floating next to each other, they looked exactly the same...creepily, so...but their expressions and demeanors were so vastly different...

Mageling 04-07-2010 09:29 PM

Taking off her shorts and shirt, Glory sat in the shallow water in her bathing suit, watching them. The really did look exactly alike... Except for the fact that Léan still had his injuries, she wouldn't have been able to tell them apart. Already, Léan looked happier and more relaxed, and she grinned, happy for him. She wasn't sure why she suddenly felt such affection for him... Mentally shaking herself, she brushed the thought aside.

Mira-Charma13 04-07-2010 09:37 PM

Archie clung to Léan's waist, burying his face in his neck. "Léan! I missed you..." He grinned. "Didja enojy the get-well fish?"

Léan, unlike his brother, just leaned on Archie instead of lavishing him in attention. "I did, actually. I am surprised you remembered. You do have the memory of a common goldfish, after all..."

Archie pouted, slapping him underwater with his tail. "Hey!" He huffed, folding his arms across his chest. He happened to catch the overly happy look on Glory's face, and his tail swished back and forth with interest, suddenly.

"Hey, Léan...if you wanna meet my mate, he's over on the rocks, perched up," he informed him, pointing to the rock farthest out. Damon had pulled himself up onto it and was basking in the sun, resting.

Léan nodded wordlessly, seeming wary of his brother's strange enthusiasm, and swam off to properly greet Damon.

As soon as he did so, Archie flipped around to face her, a smug and expectant look on his face. He didn't say anything, but the look on his face certainly implied that he thought she was hiding some...ulterior motives.

Mageling 04-07-2010 10:22 PM

Glory watched Archie warily.

"I know what look," she said. "You pull me in and I'll fillet you." She wiggled her toes into the sand. "I'm good sitting right here."

Mira-Charma13 04-07-2010 10:26 PM

Archie laughed--it was a pleasant, watery sound.

"I was thinking about it offhandedly, actually. But that isn't the main thing I'm contemplating right now!"

His tail swished back and forth cheerily beneath the shallows, kicking up a bit of sand. He kept giving her that strange look, not saying what was really eating at him. He was afraid she would react the same way he knew his brother would react to him bringing such a thing up.

"Um...this might be a little awkward and quite blunt, but..." He squinted a bit, tilting his head.

"Do you have a thing for my brother?"

Mageling 04-07-2010 10:31 PM

Glory raised an eyebrow.

"Define 'thing'," she said. Inside, though, she knew what he was asking. But she'd only known Léan for a few days... That wasn't anywhere near long enough for what Archie was suggesting... Was it?

Mira-Charma13 04-07-2010 10:34 PM

Archie swam in a circle. "General attraction to! That possible 'I-wanna-get-to-know-you-much-better' feeling," he sang, briefly ducking his head underwater and resurfacing.

"I've never seen him so comfortable with a human before! The last time a human tried to touch him--it was to hurt him, though--he nearly bit his hand off..."

Mageling 04-07-2010 10:45 PM

Glory blushed.

"I don't think what you're suggesting could even work," she pointed out. "Besides, anyone would have..." she trailed off. That wasn't true. NOT anyone would have helped him, not if what Archie said had any truth to it. "It just wouldn't work."

Mira-Charma13 04-07-2010 10:50 PM

Archie fidgeted a bit, seeming half-amused and half-nervous. He had always joked about explaining things to humans, but he'd never thought he'd actually have to do it.

"Well, um...yes, it could work," he clarified. "I used to have a friend that had a human lover. They had a child together." He nodded. "Fifty percent chance of being human...fifty percent chance of being a merman or mermaid. It can and does work...that way. The anatomy's just a little different. If you mean it won't work situation-wise...it could work, as long as you live near a body of water and stay there."

He swam around more. When she trailed off, he grinned. "But that's just it, isn't it? That's not true. Not just anyone would have helped him. Not only is he a strange creature, he's also a tenacious old grump. And yet you helped him anyway! Shouldn't that say something?"

Mageling 04-07-2010 11:22 PM

Glory blushed more, speechless. She couldn't believe she was actually having this conversation. This was not how she'd figured her day would go. Actually, three days ago, this isn't how she figured her LIFE would go.

"Isn't that what friends do?" she finally managed to squeak out. Granted, Léan probably didn't really think of her as a friend... It was just a convenient excuse.

Mira-Charma13 04-08-2010 01:00 AM

Archie seemed quite amused--his tail flicked back and forth playfully.

"You sure it's friendship? You sure it's not something else?" he encouraged, smiling. His smile faded for a moment as he glanced at his brother, who was sitting on the rocks with Damon and facing the ocean, having a nice conversation.

"I dunno about him, though...did he tell you what happened?"

Mageling 04-08-2010 01:24 AM

"He really didn't talk about anything," Glory replied, relieved at the change of subject. "So I really don't know anything about him. Then again," she added as an afterthought, "he doesn't know much about me, either. Just that I live with Nana, really."

Mira-Charma13 04-08-2010 02:13 AM

Archie's brow furrowed a bit. "Oh. Well, he's a really private person, so I'm not surprised. He, uh...did he get uncomfortable when you mentioned my mate? Like, he really wanted to avoid the subject?"

Mageling 04-08-2010 02:24 AM

Glory nodded.

"Yeah, he changed the subject a few times... I didn't push too hard about it, though. I figure it's his business, not mine," she said. Absently, she played withthe sand just under the surface of the water, watching it run slowly through her fingers. The sunlight played off of the paint on her nails, making them shine.

Mira-Charma13 04-08-2010 02:31 AM

Archie chewed the inside of his cheek.

"Well...he won't mind me telling you, as long as you don't go and fawn over him like he's the most pathetic thing in the world..." he mused.

Archie straightened a bit. "When Léan was younger, he fell in love with a human," he began, trying to recall as much as possible. "At the time, in our world, an illegal substance that can temporarily grant one of our species legs, for up to forty-eight hours, was being sold around. It's illegal in our world because of inconvenience...what if it were to wear off in the middle of a large crowd of humans?

"Léan was in love. He didn't care. So, he bought a stash of this illegal substance from the last known shop available, before nearly all of it was confiscated and all recipes for it were collected and destroyed. He took these, and he went off with this human girl, knowing he didn't have an endless supply of this drug...

"So, he ran out in a month's time. Things had been going well between them...he thought he could trust her...so he revealed what he was to her."

Archie frowned.

"She was horrified by him. Called him a monster. Threw a necklace he'd made for her into the ocean in front of him. And she ran away.

"Léan was devastated. I'd never seen him so upset in his entire life. For over a month, every night, he would go back to the dock where she did this to him and wait, to see if she would return. She never did. He eventually gave up...it wasn't an easy thing for him to do..."

Archie sighed, stretching. "He's never been quite the same since..."

Mageling 04-08-2010 02:41 AM

"That's terrible..." Glory said softly. "Obviously, what's-her-face wasn't right for him, then. I guess any story I have doesn't really compare to that..." Pulling her knees up to her chest, she wrapped her arms around them. "I don't blame him for not being very sociable. He deserves to be a little bitter after that."

Mira-Charma13 04-08-2010 02:45 AM

"He was a bitter old man even before that," Archie informed her, amused by that fact. "He just got worse after that. He rarely even smiles anymore..."

He stretched a bit. "And yet, after all that, he seems to trust you. A human and female, no less--the kind of human he hates the most, because of his experience. That really should say something."

He glanced over at his brother, who was now sitting alone on the rock as Damon swam along below him.

Léan had his arms wrapped around himself, and was staring off into the distance, absently. He always seemed to look lonely, for some reason...

Mageling 04-08-2010 03:01 AM

Glory watched Léan. He looked lonely... Standing up, she waded deeper into the water, until it was deep enough that she could go from walking to swimming. Then she started to make her way to the rock where he was sitting.

"You look like you need me to bother you for a bit," she said as she pulled herself carefully up the rock, offering a bit of company.
