"Don't worry so much," Nika said quietly. "You'll be fine."
"The whole idea kind of weirds me out," Dawn said. "I mean... Romans? It kind of makes sense, I guess, but even still..."
"Yeah, I know. Romans conquered the Greeks, killed a lot of them, and stole the Greek pantheon, claiming it as their own, along with a few members from Egyptian and Celtic mythology." Nika shrugged. "Trust me, I hate Romans too. But you can't blame these guys for events passed. And if you think about it, the only way they're Roman is through their god half. Their human half is probably American, just like us."
"I hate it when you make sense like that," Dawn said after a moment. She had to admit that Nika had a point. That didn't mean she had to like it. "We'll see how this exchange thing goes..."
Nika chuckled but didn't press the issue. She just relaxed where she was.
After a little while, Dawn stood up and stretched.
"Alright, I think I'm going to settle in for the night," she said. "Maybe pack some of my stuff." |
"Alright. Yell if you need something." Nika got up as well, but she didn't head for the cabins. She headed for the woods.
Dawn nodded and headed back to her cabin. She knew her brothers would be back later. For now, she would enjoy the relative quiet.
A few days later, Nika was out in the front of the camp to see the cabin leaders off. She was sitting up in a tree with her legs dangling, just watching for now.
Dawn went and threw her bag into the trunk of her car. By this point, she wasn't going to argue over the color anymore. It was kind of growing on her.
Nika just watched everyone else getting ready to go. She was staying there, after all, to break in the temporary Roman cabin leaders.
Once her car was packed, Dawn glanced around. She was kind of hoping to see Seth one more time before she left.
Seth headed over to her car, looking over at her. "Hey," he asked quietly. "How do you feel?"
"I still don't really want to leave," Dawn replied. "Though if I'm allowed to hit them with my bow like I am my own brothers, it might actually work out." She grinned a bit. "I made sure to bring drachmas with me, I might be able to send an Iris-message or something."
Seth smiled. "Well, I'll keep an eye open," he said with a brief grin. "Don't go easy on them or anything."
Dawn grinned.
"Not a chance," she replied. "I need to see how completely abysmal they must be with music. Rome was never big on the arts, after all." |
Seth laughed. "Well, that'll be fun. Although you never know, they might surprise you."
Dawn grinned.
"Let's hope so," she said. She paused when she heard the other cabin leaders starting to leave. "I guess that's my cue," she said reluctantly. |
A few weeks later, Nika was very glad to have Dawn back. The Romans had left again, and all was well with their world.
Well. Almost, anyway. Nika had gone out on assignment and had just come back, looking weary. A gash split her left eyebrow, just missing her eye as it continued down her cheek, and she was limping as she made it back to the cabins. But that wasn't the only bad thing. A human had seen her, and the harpy she'd been fighting. A human, who would undoubtedly go tell other humans. Even if he wasn't believed at first, humans had a way of finding out what they wanted. |
Dawn was glad to be back at camp. The trip to the Roman camp had been... enlightening, but she was more than glad to be back amongst people she didn't have to whack with her bow every few minutes.
She had seen a vision of Nika coming back, as she always did, and had sent Jason to patch her up like usual. It was practically routine by now. What she hadn't been expecting was to be hit with another vision. She saw the headline of a newspaper, some sort of tabloid, from the look of it, with a picture of a young woman and a harpy. The headline was blurry, but the picture was pretty clear, and Dawn could tell it was Nika. That wasn't good. Biting her lip a bit, she blinked away the vision and went to find her friend to ask what was going on. |
Nika grumbled and waved off Jason's help, limping her way determinedly through the camp. She needed to talk to Chiron. Now. She knew Jason was just trying to help, but she'd let him fix her up later. Talk now, healing later.
She knew what could happen now that that stupid human had found out, but she wanted Chiron to be warned, at least. Maybe they could do something to prevent it? Like go shoot the reporter before the man had a chance to gather more evidence? She had no doubt that he might have already put out the story, but if they could quell things before it got out of hand... Nika growled to herself in frustration. She should have just killed the damn reporter when she had the chance. And with that thought, she found Chiron, jerking her head to the side as she moved away from the campers. He followed her and looked down at her, raising an eyebrow. "I assume something happened?" "Yeah. A human saw me," Nika said, her lips pressed into a thin line. "A human reporter. He got pictures." Chiron started swearing under his breath. |
Dawn made it in time to see Nika pull Chiron aside, and she had a sinking feeling she knew what it was about. She hurried over to them, already trying to do what she could to maybe pull up another vision. Maybe she could find something else that would help the situation...
"It's going to be in a tabloid," she said as she got closer. "But I think it's going to get worse. I couldn't see the headline, but the pictures were really clear. I don't know why the Mist wasn't blurring anything out, but the pictures are there." |
"The Mist doesn't always work around technology," Nika said with a rumbling growl. "Especially when I'm fighting something, or I'm distracted. I know it should work for the monsters anyway, but it doesn't always."
Chiron frowned, shifting nervously. "You Saw it?" he asked Dawn. He did not like the sound of this. If they couldn't contain this, there would surely be repercussions. He just wasn't sure what kind of repercussions. |
Dawn nodded.
"If it hasn't already been printed, then it will be very soon," she said. "There's a picture, right on the front page, but I couldn't see the headline, it was too blurry. I think it's a tabloid, so people might not take it seriously at first, but I'm not entirely sure. I don't even know where it's going to be printed." She looked at them uncertainly. "I could go out there and try to find out? Maybe see if some of my contacts have heard anything yet?" |
"No. You stay here; I'll go," Nika said, giving Dawn a stern look. She didn't want Dawn going out there, not while there was a chance that there was danger. At least in the camp they should be safe.
Chiron frowned but didn't input, instead letting them hash it out themselves. |
