"Humans aren't that bad," Jason replied quietly, walking with her. "Keep in mind, most have no idea. Ignorance is bliss and all that."
"Yea but I have no idea how to act around them," Nika grumbled, browsing the menu. "You go order."
"What do you want?" he asked her. He didn't mind being the liaison, so to speak, if it made Nika feel better.
Nika shrugged. "The jerk chicken platter, I guess." It sounded interesting, at least.
Jason nodded and went over to the counter to order the food. He got the jerk shrimp instead, but it was the same general idea behind the flavors. Once he had the food, he went back to Nika.
"We can go back to the hotel now," he said. He knew she wanted to. |
Nika nodded and led the way back to the hotel, letting them into the room again.
"Okay. I feel better now." She stretched out briefly and went to go investigate the food. |
"How come you don't like humans?" Jason asked curiously as he handed her the food she wanted. "I never really figured out why."
"Never really knew my mom," Nika said quietly. "She died when I was four, and I was then shunted into the foster system. No one knew what to do with me, so I went through a dozen families in as many years. Some of them were nice, but some of them weren't. And none of them could really handle me properly, so a lot of times they would just leave me at home whenever they went out, and only one family really tried to pay any attention to me. They were... nice enough, I guess." She shrugged, sitting on the couch and curling her knees up to her chest, balancing her food there.
"It's just me and my mom," Jason said softly. "I'm not as lucky as Dawn, I don't have any full siblings like she does, and my mom never got married like hers. It was just me and my mom since forever."
Nika nodded. "But your mom knows what you are," she said quietly. "And she stayed with you."
"She tries to pretend I'm normal," Jason said. "We don't talk about camp, or about Dad, or anything like that. I keep that part of my life away from her, and she pretends I'm just a normal guy. It keeps her happy."
Nika nodded. She could understand that, sort of. "Well, it doesn't sound as nice as Dawn's arrangement, but whatever works."
"Dawn hit the family lottery," Jason snorted. "Nobody's as lucky as she is."
"No kidding. Ah well." Nika shrugged and started eating. "Least I have my god-siblings." Because they were generally nice to her, when they weren't hitting on her or trying to scare the crap out of her.
"Yeah, my god-brothers aren't as interesting as yours," Jason agreed. "I mean, I'm grateful Asclepius supercharged my healing for me, since that's been useful, but Aristeus is kind of useless to us most of the time. Bee-keeping is kind of an outdated profession, sort of. The only use I would have for it is that honey is anti-bacterial, I think."
"Aw, what about mead?" Nika grinned. "Bet he could make great mead." Because she could just see the gods all getting drunk off mead. Hey, wine worked well too, and that made for hilarious parties.
Jason paused and blinked.
"I don't know," he admitted finally. "Mead isn't Greek, really, so I don't know if he makes it or not. But it's made from honey, so he might." |
"You should ask him next time you see him. It would be interesting to know, anyway." Nika shrugged.
"I'll keep it in mind," Jason replied. He grinned. "If he does, I might be able to get my hands on some."
Nika grinned. "Now that would be something to try." She got up and tossed their trash before going over to sit next to him, leaning against his side.
Jason grinned and put an arm around her waist.
"Maybe I can get Aaron to get some for us," he said. "He's usually on good terms with them. He would know how." |
Nika grinned. "Yup. If we're doing that, I'll have to get Calix to get some wine from Dionysus. Apparently he makes the best wine. And yes I know exactly how much sense that makes."
"Well, you know, all things considered," Jason replied, grinning. "Just a little bit obvious."
Nika snorted at that and shook her head. relaxing there for a little while.
"You know, we could go for a swim in a bit, once the people are gone for the night. Won't take much longer now." |
"A night swim?" Jason asked. He nodded. "Sure, sounds like fun." He grinned. "And you know, the hotel probably has a hot tub. It's no hot spring, but it should be okay"
