The shoes were floppy and his talons still poked out at the toes, but with the sharpie marks around the exit holes it kind of looked fashionable. The baggy pants hid his thin, scrawny, bird legs well enough with room for his tail to be tucked in. The only thing that still looked out of place were the large black wings poking out from behind a ratty tank top with some bizarre screen print. He looked like a student in the fashion department, nothing matched but was way too artsy. Xikah frowned as he wiggled his wings freely, "You sure this will work? I can hang around without being chased out?" he looked at the two girls.

Skyler, his older cousin, wore a large feathered jacket to hide her wings and a flowing bohemian skirt that hid her legs. She laughed at him like family is supposed to, "Trust me, you look ridiculous. But hey, at least I got you a job right? So you can at least help Orelia pay the rent." She worked for a supernatural placement agency, moving and hiding those who needed it, they needed a messenger and her cousin had moved into the area.

PapillonCameo 05-19-2011 11:44 AM

Orelia laughed a little, and smiled at the harpy in disguise. "You won't exactly fit in, but when do you ever do that Xikah!" She adored the fact that the tengu harpy was going trough so much trouble just to help her pay the rent. They had just recently moved in together after meeting at the Wellington masquerade. So far Orelia had been paying the rent by selling some of her paintings. The young woman was actually breaking into painting portraits.

Reaching out she took his hand, and tried not to burst out laughing again. Skyler was right, he really did look ridiculous. Still, if this disguise helped him get a job... It was putting a little strain on Orelia, going to university and trying to meet end's meet without any help. The young woman wouldn't have changed the difficult situation for anything though. Her university friends couldn't understand why she had made such a brash decision, but they didn't know Xikah.

~LONGCAT~ 05-20-2011 01:39 AM

Sticking his tongue out at the older harpy, Xikah tightened his grip on Orelia's hand. "You got me there. It's more fun to stand out than to blend in. I mean what kind of harpy would I be if I didn't stand out and cause a scene?" He grinned his shark-tooth grin, one of the few things he couldn't hide about himself. It was true that he had gotten himself a job, it was better than the thieving and pawning, which if he did it often enough was easy to catch on, not to mention that Orelia hated when he did that. He knew that he needed to pull his weight around and was grateful that his cousin had gotten him a job that paid real money and not in baubles, which he would have taken. He was still getting used to the whole idea of living with humans, and following their rules.

Skyler grabbed her bag and turned to head out, "One who would be unemployed and plucked. See you guys around, oh and Orelia, if you ever want to get into 'fantasy portraits' I can hook you up with a few willing models. Just drop a line, you've got my number now." She mimed the "call me" sign with her hands as she walked out, her talons clacking on the ground like high-heels.

PapillonCameo 05-21-2011 02:54 PM

Orelia smiled and shook her head at the two harpies. Her life had certainly been transformed since the ball a mere week and a half before. It hadn't taken long at all for her to find an apartment and move in. The hard part had been figuring out how to get Xikah into the apartment without a fuss. Now they were walking in her university, going to pick up some of her paintings. They would adorn the walls of their home. "You wouldn't be yourself if you didn't cause a scene, but please try not to here at least. This university is where I'm learning how to paint, and I need to keep up my reputation." A ruined repuation would probably end her career before it even truly began.

The offer Sky had made was very tempting. Orelia would definitely think about it, especially since there was a project coming up about mythical creatures. A small secretive smile flitted across her face at the thought of what she knew, and no one else did. "Orelia! Where have you been!" David came running over with his floppy blond hair falling in his grey eyes, and his paint splattered clothing. He was in the same year as Orelia, and a good friend. Of course, the young man had also been her object of affections before she'd met Xikah.

"Just settling in with my boyfriend in our apartment. And in class, as you've noticed, I've been very busy." Orelia could only hope David had forgotten his own budding feelings for her. "This is Xikah, and this is David." The young woman pointed to each in turn as she introduced them. She was sure the had been about to become an item, but now things were completely different. Xikah, well she had no idea how he would react he was so unpredictable. Of course she liked that about the harpy tengu, but sometimes it worried her.

~LONGCAT~ 05-27-2011 01:58 AM

Xikah sighed and rolled his eyes at both of them. It wasn't like he was completely helpless in making any sort of money, but a steady source of it would help them, at least from what he understood. He was more used to the take what you need and borrow what you don't, mentality of living on the wing, but he was well prepared to stick around and behave for Orelia. Their apartment was nice, it had a large window that faced away from the other buildings, he had been using it as his entrance until they had managed to get together a decent guise for him. He really didn't require much other than the window; he had made a nest pile in a corner as he slowly acclimated to a more human life, he knew that the pile would have to go eventually.

Looking around at the old buildings of her university, Xikah was glad for the crash course she had given him. Now he knew that he didn't need to fight the "Oonifersity" because it wasn't a creature. And she had tried to teach him enough tact to interact with others without ruining all chances. He was starting to understand how much certain things, like respect and reputation meant to her. They were new concepts to him so he still didn't grasp their full meaning, but he was trying.

"I'll try, I really will." He promised her as a young man ran up to them. Beaming at the other guy his sharp teeth showing, Xikah introduced himself. "David! You can call me Xeek if you want." He was going for "friendly intimidation".

PapillonCameo 05-27-2011 02:36 AM

Orelia watched them interact. She didn't want to say anything to interfere. It was a little like when a cat and dog needed to figure out who was boss. Hopefully Xikah would win this little skirmish, if not she would smooth his ruffled feathers and ego. Then of course, she would give David a tongue lashing.

"Nice to meet you." He extended a hand not intimidated in the least. Inconspicuously the young man moved closer to Orelia and put an arm around her shoulders. "Ready for that illustration of mythical creatures project we have?" He was staking his territory, even if the young woman had said she was going out with Xikah. David didn't trust Xeek's shark like grin.

(Short I know, sorry!)

~LONGCAT~ 05-27-2011 07:39 PM

Xikah shook his hand with an overly firm grip, his eyes narrowing dangerously and his grin dropping to a sneer. He didn't really care for how friendly this human was acting towards his Orelia. Being part harpy he wasn't very inclined to share anything, and he certainly wasn't going to share the human that he loved. He knew that he had made a promise to Orelia, but if David tried anything else he couldn't be sure of what he would do next. His feathers bristled involuntarily as a way to make himself seem larger at the same time he straightened his backwards bent legs growing an inch or so, talons flexing through the shoes. Biting his tongue he held back some of the nasty comments that bubbled forth; he didn't want to ruin the disguise the two of them had worked so hard building so he would fit in better. "Orelia's such a great artist, the mythical creature project won't be a challenge at all for her. I'm sure her work will look incredibly life like. In fact we were off to get a few of her works to decorate our apartment." his voice had a venomous touch to it as he feigned politeness.

PapillonCameo 05-27-2011 09:14 PM

(I had to go eat some pepperoni pizza XD)

After watching the small exchange, the young woman cringed. This was definitely not working out all that well, though she did kind of like the fact that Xikah was so protective of her. A memory flashed to her mind and she moved forward and placed a calming hand on Xeek's arm. The other hand was gently passing over some of the feather's behind his back, out of sight from David. "Hey Xikah, remember when we met? You sure got tangled up, and for days after I Wanted to carry a frying pan around!" Orelia waved at David before tugging Xikah away gently, but firmly.

Once they were tucked away in a small nook out of view and hearing range, Orelia sighed. "I know this is hard for you, and not that I'm not flattered, it's just I'm a little worried that he might have noticed something." Moving forward, she hugged the harpy tengu to take the slight sting out of her words. After that her eyes lit up as she remembered what he had said. "Do you really think I'm a great artist?" It wasn't right, but she loved getting praise about her artistic skills.

~LONGCAT~ 05-28-2011 02:14 PM

Letting himself be pulled aside, he dropped back to a more comfortable height to walk at. Xikah was finding himself more comfortable around her than anyone else. She was able to smooth out ruffled feathers and calm harpy storms. "I don't really care right now what he noticed, as long as it was that you are not something he can take from me. And I do remember that night, I told you that night that it's now my turn to keep you safe." he fidgeted with the ring she had given him, he had put it on a chain as it didn't quite fit over his fingers. He was anxious and upset as he always was when he felt that something was going to be taken away. But the hands smoothing down his feathers and the hug calmed him down, he closed his eyes and smiled as he returned the hug. She always seemed to know how to diffuse him. "Mmm, yeah. I like your pictures. They're like keeping small windows to other places in our nest." He could never produce things like that, he did know a few musical instruments but nothing that he could display and treasure.

PapillonCameo 05-28-2011 06:40 PM

Every time they spoke, Xkah always said things that made Orelia want to melt. Smiling, she shook her head a little. 'I'll paint something for you if you want. It isn't the first time I've asked, but you always seem to forget about it." Or the harpy got distracted. Glancing up, the young woman grinned. She was sure that he would love to go see Cirque Du Soleil especially their Corteo act. The tickets were a surprise, and one that Orelia had saved up a long time for.

Brown hair fanning freely around her face, the young woman gripped Xikah's hand again."You know no one could take me away from you, dear Xeek. I fought off a were bear for you, I wouldn't have done that for just anyone." A nest! She supposed it was their nest, though it made Orelia feel strange inside. It was theirs, a fact which was still strange to the young woman. Never before had she shared an apartment with someone, and not someone she cared so much for. A warm fuzzy feeling always seemed to swell in her heart at the thought that Xikah was living with her.

~LONGCAT~ 05-29-2011 04:48 AM

Xikah felt bad, it wasn't an emotion he got often but occasionally he did. He knew that his memory wasn't the greatest and he was starting to understand that he needed to get others to like him at the same time. So today wasn't going as well as he had hoped. Already he had caused a small scene and most likely gotten on the bad side of one of Orelia's friends. Placing his forehead against hers he smiled softly again, "I know, but he was just being too close, and well, you know me." it was the closest he was getting to an apology.

"I'll try again, if you want me to. I didn't call him a narrow faced sand troll or a brazen water hag's son. I could have, but I stopped myself because you told me to behave today." He knew that he was just fishing for praise and would more likely receive a frown and possibly a swat for even coming up with such insults. He also wanted to fix things and meet more of her friends without chasing them off or letting on to the hidden world he was from.

Looking around he was able to see a few people walking about the campus. Some of them were carrying large folders and small wooden boxes. He had seen his human-girl with these around the apartment, but he knew that they were not full of food or shinies inside of them. He thought he could still see David hanging around, he wasn't exactly thrilled by the idea of having to talk with him again, but if he had to he would try again.

PapillonCameo 05-29-2011 09:42 PM

She laughed, Orelia couldn't help it. No matter the circumstances Xikah always brought out the urge to burst out in laughter and never stop. Still laughing, she leaned forward to plant a kiss on his lips. Pulling away with a twinkle in her eyes the young woman placed a hand on his arm. "It's alright, it might actually be better to wait for another time. Understandably, you aren't used to this place yet... Besides, maybe I want to keep you all to myself for a little while longer." Mirth was behind every teasing word.

She noticed David, and shook her head in his direction. After that she watched people walking by with their hands full at a quick pace. Sometimes Orelia found herself wanting to make a place within Xikah's world for herself. She wanted to have adventures like at the masquerade. Sure it hadn't all been wonderful, but it had been amazing to see all those myths and legends come to life!

~LONGCAT~ 05-31-2011 06:26 PM

Xikah was still a little confused by everything, this much was true. It was a big jump for him to live full time among humans, unlike his cousin who had been among them for a number of years and could easily maneuver in most situations he was still learning to not immediately rely on his wings for transport. He smiled sweetly at his human-girl and kissed her back before taking her hand in his. "Are we still going to get your pictures? I want to see them." He also liked being out among the other people, it was like a game to him. A harpy-tengu hiding in plain sight, it was a thrill and he wanted to push the envelope to see how far he could get away with it.

He had his first delivery job later that night and he wanted to spend the day with Orelia. "Want me to cook before I head out tonight? I can make bulgogi with the grill." Cooking was one of the few talents that he had kept a secret from most people, but he was actually decent at it. Knowing mostly Asian and Middle Eastern dishes, having spent most of his travels in those regions of the world. He wouldn't have cooked for anyone else, but he found it fun to make things for his girlfriend.

PapillonCameo 06-01-2011 12:57 AM

The only answer she gave Xikah was to drag him along behind her. They weaved trough the maze of corridors, leaving David far behind them. If only it were so easy to leave other troubles behind. Orelia was slightly saddened at the fact that her dear Xikah didn't want her to meet his parents, and never seemed to want to tell her why. Every time she brought up the subject, well things didn't end well. The young woman hated arguing with him, so it didn't come up often.

She perked up the moment they entered the art studio of the university. In it were hundreds of painting. Unerringly the young woman found her pile. Each painting represented a scene right from fantasy stories, myths and legends, or her variations of them. Of course there were others too, but those were her favorites and the ones she wanted to take home. "Yeah, you know how much I like your cooking Xeek." An absent minded grin crossed Orelia's face as she plucked paintings from the pile to show them to Xikah one by one.

~LONGCAT~ 06-01-2011 08:51 PM

He managed to keep his wings tucked in when she dragged him along with her. The went past a whole bunch of doors and other paths, people barely gave them a second glance as they maneuvered through the school. By the end of it Xikah didn't know how they got where they did and he was feeling slightly dizzy from the weaving. He certainly wasn't going to be able to make it back on his own, unless he use a window.

Nodding his head, he muttered something under his breath while he touched the pads of his fingers together as if counting. As Orelia looked through her painting, pulling a few aside the harpy quickly got distracted from his own thoughts and hovered over her shoulder, watching. A few paintings went by, and she pulled a few aside when he saw something that caught his eye. Thrusting his arm out, finger pointing at it he exclaimed, "That one! I want. Please? We keep that one! Mine?" With simple sentences he got his point across, and in the process sounded more like a wild harpy. It was a relatively simple painting of a sea scape, edge of land visible with dark waves and darker clouds overhead. In the back, barely illuminated by the storm's glow was a serpent.

PapillonCameo 06-02-2011 02:00 AM

Surveying the painting critically, Orelia nodded to herself. Then she burst out laughing and turned to smile at Xikah. "You're adorable when you're like this," murmured the young woman with a twinkle in her eyes. She loved being with him, because the harpy was always himself. Sure, sometimes it was annoying but most of the times things were just fine. As light filtered trough the windows up on the roof, Orelia moved to place the painting carefully in Xikah's hands.

"Now, I'll be bringing this one home," said Orelia. In her hands was a medium sized painting of a young woman and a winged man. She'd painted it just a little while ago, obsessively looking at Xikah the whole time she had been painting. It was obviously him, but the young woman's face was hidden by her multi-colored hair. Orelia supposed she was jut a little bit frightened that Xeek might find someone more to his taste.

~LONGCAT~ 06-02-2011 03:18 AM

He nuzzled the top of her head as he took the painting from her, making sure to keep his fingernails to himself. He didn't want to somehow hurt the painting he probably would have been sad if that happened. He liked to keep his gifts and treasures safe and pretty; other harpies would have destroyed them out of spite, but he wasn't like them, he really tried not to be like those ones. Looking at the painting she pulled out for herself he made a face, there was something about the picture that he didn't like. He wasn't sure what it was but there was something that bothered him. It was still a very well painted picture, but he didn't like it as much as the sea monster picture; his little window to the ocean.

"We go home now? We can take the fast way..." the tengu offered his method of quick travel, trying to see if he could get away with it. He wanted to stretch his wings out and take a short flight, they were listless after having to be still for so long. He knew the rules, but he just wanted to test them and see what he could get away with.

PapillonCameo 06-02-2011 05:05 PM

Seeing his face made Orelia frowned. She wondered what had brought this on.. It was unlike Xikah to make such faces. Carefully, she took the two paintings they had chosen, plus another one of a waterfall with a dragon in a lake. Placing them together in a bag she considered the question carefully. Glancing at Xikah's wings she sighed unhappily, it was hard seeing everything he went trough just to stay with her. "I'm sorry, so sorry Xikah... You can't, what happens if someone sees? It's just too horrible to think about!" Her brown eyes were full of the emotions she was feeling as she regarded him.

~LONGCAT~ 06-03-2011 01:06 AM

Dramatically slumping, Xikah lurched towards the door. "Hurpmf. But I wanna.." Moaning about how he wasn't allowed to have any fun and generally being over dramatic about everything, he flung the door open and shuffled into the hall. His wings brushed the floor as he moped about, but his feathers weren't the only ones making a noise in the hall. Deep thwumps came from the open stairwell, the sound of wing beats caught the attention of Xikah. He shuffled over to the stairs, arms nearly dragging as he continued being dramatic about his 'plight', looking over the edge he saw the source of the sound. A fat chunky chicken-sized bird was trying to make its way up from a center pit like structure at the bottom. A girl with blond curly hair and a fur rimmed shoulder pull was staring down at the bird making encouraging noises.
"Uh, Orelia. Do you know that bird? I mean, the girl down there? No, I really just want to know about the little fat bird, I don't really care about her. It's tiny and fat!" He was grinning with his full sharky grin looking back down the hall at his human-girl.

PapillonCameo 06-03-2011 01:56 AM

Following Xikah while shaking her head, she sighed. Really, sometimes he got a little on even her nerves. Jogging over to join him she looked down at the person he spoke off. It was one of her acquaintances from a class... Brenda! "That's Brenda, and I have no idea about the bird." Looking down at her, she felt a pang of fear. Looking from Xikah to her, she wondered if it would be Xandith all over again. Except this time it would hurt a thousand times more, because no one would be there to make her laugh.

Reaching out Orelia ran a hand over his wings. "You know you can't fly where anyone could see you. If you got caught, people would put you in a cage, experiment on you... I just don't want to see you hurt." Orelia whispered the words so only he would be able to hear. She was getting nervous and frightened, not a good combination.

~LONGCAT~ 06-03-2011 02:15 AM

"I want one. My fat little bird, I can feed him pizza crusts and ice cream." he was drifting back into his own little world, looking over the edge of the stairs his focus was soley on the bird as if he had already forgotten about the girl. Feeling the touch on his wings brought him back to face his Orelia. Seeing the look on her face caused his to fall, reaching up to caress her cheek he tried to comfort her. "I would never let them take me from you, ever. I would rather they took my wings than you. And besides Sky said cages were a terrible place to stuck, but she never got experimented on. She said lots of people looked and stared at her and sometimes they threw popcorn!" and his mind had already wandered off topic again.

Hearing voices Brenda looked around. She couldn't find where they were until she looked up, then she saw two figures at the top of the stairwell. Waving her arm up to them she called out, "Hey there! Do either of you have a ladder or a rope or something? My project has fallen into the center column and it can't fly out." She looked back at the fancy chicken desperately trying to flap its way out; she was experimenting with using live animals to create art this semester. Dipping them in paint, or putting out small puddles of paint and surrounding them with canvasses. It wasn't going quite as she had planned so far.

PapillonCameo 06-03-2011 02:29 AM

Catching his hand in her own, Orelia placed a soft kiss to the palm of it. Once that was done she turned to pay attention to Brenda. Thinking about the situation, Orelia knew she had to make sure to pay close attention to Xikah. He would certainly want to fly down and rescue the chicken. Orelia clutched one of his hands as a preventative measure. "No ropes or ladders. But we can probably go ask a janitor to get some." Aside to Xikah she said, "We'll go pick out a bird latter, just please don't plunge down there, please?" Pleading was in her voice as she spoke with him. She wondered why she was always on edge now.. Orelia supposed it was because she was so afraid of so many things happening and going wrong that it was impossible for her to really relax.

~LONGCAT~ 06-08-2011 11:56 PM

He licked his lips as his eyes returned to the fancy chicken trapped below. Xikah was thinking of all the ways he could fatten it up on junk food when a tight grip on his hand brought him back to reality. His tongue was still out of his mouth as he looked at her, "... Okies. Can I get one I can feed 'En am Emms'?" He stumbled over new words for snack foods that Orelia had him try. He liked the chips and candies best, but he could feel that they couldn't be good in the long run as they made his feathers feel heavier.

"OK. I can wait with this stupid feather head! And here I though a flightless fancy chicken would be better..." Brenda looked up, her hands on her hip clearly fed up with her circumstances. If it wasn't essential to her semester project it looked like she would have left it stuck in the center, however when she turned her attention back to the "Stupid feather head" it sounded like she was again cooing encouragement to the bird.
