Coco sat in the dust covered cupboard. Her eyes were glassed as she watched Steven. It had been years since he had taken her out and talked to her, Coco had been his since birth. She had practically grown up with him, how she wished she could talk to him and tell him how much she loved him. The smile plastered on the dolls face seemed to only get bigger as she thought about her now older playmate. The artificial silk ribbons in her hair were now coated with years of dust, the cupboard glass was grimy. When Steven wasn't home she would quietly and quickly wipe the inside glass of the cupboard so she would not loose sight of Steven when he sat their in front of her, doing his home work or playing video games or talking on the phone.
Coco was merely waiting for the day when the said blue moon was cross the earth and she would be able to come to life. That day, Coco believed, would come soon. The pretty little doll could feel it in her wooden, almost non-existent heart. But she knew the dangers that came with becoming human, if in exactly a year Steven did not return his feelings for Coco she would once again be turned back into a doll, waiting for another moon. She knew in her heart if she missed this chance with Steven, she would probably never see him again. Coco watched Steven everyday to pick up on the little human things he did, she learned them so that when she was eventually human she would be able to do everything that Steven loved. Coco's eyes glistened brighter at that thought. |
Steven awoke, sleepily in his bed. Another day of school. At least it was his last year of high school and he didn't have to deal with those asshole boys and frivolous minded girls, always giggling. He leaned up and rubbed his eyes. Getting out of bed felt like the end of the world to him. Steven looked at his wall filled with posters and memories from the good old days, but the cupboard caught his eye. It's always been there, but he never took a second look before. The small door squeaked as it opened. He took the small doll into his hands. "It's been a while, Coco." He gently caressed her cheek with his thumb. "Think you can get me through the day?" He embraced her softly and set her on his bed. "You don't want to be in that dusty cupboard forever, do you?" He smiled and changed out of his pajamas into his normal casual wear. Red tshirt and khakis. He left his hair a mess. He just really didn't care that day. He could pull it off anyway.

Coco's imaginary heart seemed to stop and skip a beat. It was Steven, he seemed to be reaching for her! Her eyes, for a moment, they seemed to enlarge. If she could have gasped she would have had the biggest gasp ever. 'It has been awhile Steven' she thought sadly to herself. Coco could have teared up if she could have cried, he would be leaving for University next year. Oh how she wished she could have hugged him back, even on her wooden skin she could feel his kind warmth. Coco fell over on his bed after he had set her up right, it was her way of saying goodbye to him.
Coco was on Steven's bed just like when they were little! He would play with her all day and then when he was sleepy he would drag her to bed with him and hug her till he fell asleep. Coco's eyes shone as she said goodbye to Steven in her head. Now that he had taken her out of the cupboard, maybe he would finally start talking to her again. She would have listened to his voice for hours and hours. |
Steven headed to school, feeling exahausted still. His classroom was old and worn down as the whole building was. It was over eighty years old. He sighed and got through first period. As the hallways crowded with teenagers, Steven felt himself being shoved into the lockers. It was much too strong a push to be an accident. He heard one of his classmates call out. "Loser!" His stomach dropped. He felt sick. Even still he went through the day. When he got home he scurried to his room. His doll was where he had left her.he sat on the bed, holding on to her. The feel of her was, no doubt, nostalgic. she even smelled the same. "Coco, there are just somedays I wish you were a real person. You're a great listener, but sometimes I wish you could speak back. I bet you have great advice."
Coco had been waiting there on the bed for what seemed like an eternity, which was pretty ironic since Coco never seemed to feel impatient for Steven before. She had even take the liberty off climbing down the high bed and to the window sill to see if Steven was back home or not. When he entered the room, a sense of calm washed over her, he was safe.
As he took her into his arms and as she listened to his problems she just wanted to leap out and say 'YES! I am listening Steven! Pour your heart out too me please!' Oh how she wished she could talk back to him. Coco wanted to assure him that she was indeed there, she was not just a pretty face painted on. She was not just made of wood, she had feeling and she was there, listening to each and every word Steven uttered. |
Steven sighed, looking at the doll. "Man, you always make me feel better. Even without doing anything." He didn't know why, but he knew it was weird to be talking to his doll, but never once did he feel that way. Coco felt absolutely real to him and was his absolute best and only friend. He picked her up and held her to a soft embrace. "I can't tell you how much I've missed this." He snuggled her and laid her down. He laid next to her and began to explain and talk about everything after he had put her in the case. He dtopped to pause for a minute. "You know, I'm sorry for keeping you in there for so long. It must have been terrible." He closed his eyes and held her tiny hand. "Coco, I really do love you, you know that?" He smiled like a child.
Coco stared at him innocently, her doll eyes unblinking. 'I've missed you too Steven' she thought smiling in her head. Her soft pink hair with bits of dust in it was splayed all over the pillow as she was laid on her side by Steven. Coco wanted to tell Steven that it was okay that he had kept her away for that long, she didn't really mind.
If Coco could move in front of his eyes, she would have told him that it wasn't as horrible as he thought. As long as she was his friend everything would be okay. Coco's hand twitched softly before she got a hold of her dolly self again, had he just said...he loved her. She wanted to beam at him, her wooden heart felt like it would explode with happiness! |
Steven sighed and curled up in his blankets with Coco in his arms. As he fell into slumber, he dreamed. It was all white and Steven heard light, classical music. He was dressed in a suit. It was old fashined, but some how comfy. The air was clear and pleasant. Out of nowhere a girl slowly stepped forward to him. Her dress was beautiful. They danced together for what seemed like days. No matter how hard he tried, Steven couldn't make out the girl's face. There was no doubt that she was beautiful, but how he wished he could make out her face to recognize her if she ever came back to him. Whether it be in reality or in his dreams. He tried his best to memorize every detail of the dress and the feel of her hair.
While Steven slept Coco was wide awake, but soon..the doll felt herself drifting away. She fell into a deep slumber without even trying. As Coco fell asleep, something miraculous happened. The whole Earth seemed to stand still, a bluish-white light passed over the Earth. It seemed to almost replace and over power the moons beam, the blue ball in front of the moon was huge. It was a beautiful contrast against the dark night sky! The blue ball seemed to have haunting powers for no one seemed to stir, everything was asleep. Even the animals that were wandering and howling just moments before seemed to be enchanted and almost forced to sleep.
This blue moon lasted for exactly a minute, and in Stevens house changes began to occur, a single beam fell upon the sleep doll Coco. The doll seemed to grow, her limbs got longer, her face even more beautiful, her lips like rosebuds and her hair grew. The moon passed over and the whole city seemed to be in slumber, no one noticed that everything the blue beam had touched, that thing had changed. Unknowingly, Coco shifted her weight and continued to sleep on her side, never imagining that her so longed wish had come true. |
Steven's even breaths stopped as he awoke, wearily. He wished that dream would never end. Something seemed different about his room. His bed felt a little more weighed down than normal. He looked over and screamed. There was some strange girl in his bed. He quickly jumped out of bed and pointed at her. "Who do you think you are?" He asked easing backwards.
Coco nearly fell off the bed, her hand clung to the side as she jolted up at the scream. She stared long, and hard, at Steven. Her eyes blinked rapidly, her mouth was hanging open and what was this? She heard a...pounding? In her ears! She gulped! She had saliva running through her mouth! "Steven..." she whispered out. Her voice came out gentle, like a whisper, her own voice surprised herself.
"Steven!" she cried out louder again, she threw her arms around the boy that seemed to be cautiously backing away. But how? She didn't understand this, one moment she had been awake, and the next she was human. This had to be a bizarre dream, seeing the confused look on Steven's face she smiled, "I...I'm Coco...you know...your...doll.." she offered him an awkward smile. |
Steven trembled and stared until she spoke her name. Somehow, as crazy as it sounded, he believed every word she said. This was so strange to him, but he couldn't deny that this was, in fact, reality. He exhaled and took a hesitant step forward. "C-Coco?" He reached out and touched her face. His old doll was no longer plastic. She was flesh and blood. Steven stepped closer to her, looking at her eyes. They were still the same color, but they were so full of life and her hair felt smooth just as if he had carefully brushed it out as a child. He couldn't believe his eyes. "H-How did this happen?" He said, amlost nervously. Steven was so happy that his dream had actually come true.
A warm feeling spread over Coco's face, her cheeks turned a delicate pink colour. She nodded when Steven called her name, Coco looked at him confused as he asked her how this had happened. "I...I don't quite know how this happened either" she said shyly. After a moment of silent pondering her pink eyes widened, "On the other hand...I think I may know how..." her mouth was turned up into a small smile as she spoke. "Th...there are rumors that once in a life time the moon...it is over shadowed by blue, and if you are in the presence of the moon when it is blue...strange things are said to happen.." she whispered. "But, I don't know if that is what truly happened...I seemed to have fallen asleep" she said laughing quietly.
Coco still wondered if this was reality or just a very life like dream. "I'm not even sure that...this is even reality Steven...it could just be one of our dreams" she offered this idea weakly too him. She wished in her heart that this was all just more than a dream, that she was actually living, that she actually had a heart, and blood pulsing through her veins. Coco looked at Steven once again and let her porcelain hands touch his hair, it was a brilliant brownish-red. |
Steven looked to his feet. No. He refused to believe that this was a dream. It seemed too real and it would kill him, if he had woken up from this. His eye, then, scanned back up to Coco's face. "Well," he began closer to her, "if this is a dream, then it wouldn't matter if I did this." Steven grabbed her face and kissed her soft human lips. Right then, he knew that this moment was reality. He did not want to let go of the embrace their lips were tied in. It was the most amazing feeling that tingled throughout his body.
Coco's eyes widened as he leaned into her, then her cheeks gave away to a blush so bright that she was scared Steven could see it even through the fairly dark night. Coco was lost, what did she do?! After all, she had been a doll for 18 years of her life, shyly she leaned into Steven. She kissed him back rather awkwardly, she pulled away first and averted her eyes. "I'm sorry..." she whispered, "I...I don't know how humans do this" she admitted, giving Steven a small nervous giggle. Coco bent over shyly towards Steven and planted a soft kiss on his cheek instead, to indicate that she felt the same way that he obviously felt about her but she had no idea how to show it.
Steen let out a soft, warm smile. "That's alright. I didn't expect you to be that good though." He patted her head and blushed. "All in good time, though, right?" He said, implying that he most certainly wanted to do that again. Everything she did just felt right to him and the more Steven kept looking at her, the more in love with her she fell. He looked down at his feet. "So what do you want to do? Are you hungry or bored or anything?"
Coco tilted her head, slightly confused. "You mean...you don't mind?" whispered shyly to him. For some reason she thought he would be disappointed that she didn't know how to properly kiss and what not. Coco put her head down on his shoulder and just lay there smiling up at him. "What to do?" she asked herself again, "Well...I guess I am kind of hungry" she whispered quietly at him. Her violet eyes looked up at Steven as she grinned at the thought of having dinner with Steven. "Tell me about everything Steven! How have you been?" she asked him almost out of breath as she looked at him again.
"Of course not." Steven said lightly, assuring her. He smiled as he waited for his decision. "Okay," he said taking her hand and pulling her to the kitchen, "I'll make you something. Anything in particular you wanted to try?" He sat down at the table with her. "Well, I'm quiet and shy around people, but it doesn't seem to be the case around you for some reason. Which is the most amazing thing ever to me." He laughed. "School's been okay. Not much liking for the people though." He sighed. "I'm not sure if there's anything else I can think of. Is there anything specific you wanted to know?" He stood. "Oh, I should probably start making food. What did you want?"
Coco stumbled slightly behind Steven as he guided her to the kitchen. Coco tilted her head to the side, "I've never actually eaten food before..." she said with a small smile. "I have no idea what to eat" her eyes were wide as she thought about actually eating food! Coco put her arms on the table with her chin resting on them, she looked up at Steven with admiration. She was glad he wasn't scared of her. Her eyebrows raised when he said he didn't like any of the people at his school, "are the children in your school mean?" she whispered. Coco shook her head as he asked her if she wanted to know anything. The truth was she didn't know what to ask. "You can make anything" she said with a small smile.
Steven lowered his eyes. "Yeah. I guess you could say that." he said quietly, remembering the massive amounts of beatings he received throughout the school days. He lifted his head and smiled at her. "Okay. I'll make some cake. It's not really the healthiest breakfast, but I think the first thing you should taste should be something very sweet." he said, implying that she was sweet. "Would you like to help, Coco?"
Coco smiled and nodded, "I would love to help!" she said walked around beside Steven and looked at the kitchen. Her eyes were a tad bid wide as she took in everything. What was everything, she blinked, obviously confused. "How can I help?" she asked turning around to look at Steven. Coco hoped that she would actually be able to help instead of making a fool of herself.
