The air was ripe with hundreds of smells, and they all assaulted Rye's senses as she dipped lower to follow the wind current. It brought her closer to the marketplace below, which was crawling with human and dragon commoners buying and peddling wares. The scent of exotic smelling spices and sweet baked goods made Rye's mouth water a little as she landed. Her sandal clad feet scraped unpleasantly against the roof where she perched. Adjusting her tail, the courier did her best to stay balanced as she surveyed the scene below. She hoped the roof didn't cave in; last time it had happened, the home's owners hadn't been pleased at all.
"Maybe I could just...take a little break." Rye pursed her reptilian lips and squinted at a nearby stand, where one of the local bakers seemed to be having a sale. Cinnamon and sugar permeated the air, tempting shoppers to stop and eat. Her gaze slid farther down to a pouch tied around her waist. Inside were a letter she still had to deliver to some Dragon merchant woman, as well as a scroll that had arrived for her, courtesy of the population comity. She should have known that her lack of proper identification papers would come to their attention sooner or later once she began working, but the girl hadn't expected it to be so soon. Rye pursed her lips and sulked. Going to explain herself would take up half her day- time she could have spent on more important things. Eating. Working. Eating, using the money she'd earned working. The list was endless.
Her wings extended, and the halfling reluctantly hopped off the edge of the roof. The leathery appendages beat the air and swirled up dust, much to the below shopper's chagrin. Shooting them a half apologetic grin, Rye took off. The address written on her client's letter wasn't too far off from the city council's office. One small spot of luck., Rye thought. She kept her flight low so that she wouldn't miss the residence by mistake. As it was, the courier nearly missed it anyway. Her thoughts had begun to drift back to the apple pastries she was missing back at the market place, and Rye barely skittered to a halt atop her client's roof without missing her mark. Teetering on the edge, the sunny eyed girl managed to regain her balance and lower herself down onto the street. Her claws let go of the roof's edge and she landed on the ground with a soft thump.
She brushed some of the dust off her blouse and amiably makes her way to the entrance. Reaching into her pouch, Rye knocked sharply at the same time. By the time she'd managed to wrestle the letter out a servant had already scurried over to greet her. "Delivery for Madame Damask."
The servant glanced down at the unopened letter. He was an elderly human with pouched eyes and a face lined with wrinkles. "One moment, if you please." Rye nodded and waited as the man retreated back inside to collect payment from his mistress. She rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet impatiently. After a few minutes had passed, the man returned. He placed a handful of copper coins into her hands and thanked her on behalf of the merchantess. Rye counted her payment, making sure everything was there.
"Thanks for the business!" The halfling did her best polite smile and even gave a little bow. "Call on me again sometime, kay?" The servant retreated back into his home. Rye turned her attention to the summons in her pouch once more. Her last job of the day had been completed. She couldn't really put it off any longer.
"Dammit." Her words weren't aimed at anyone in particular, though a few townspeople stopped and shot her unpleasant looks. Rye repaid the favor with a cheeky wave, turning on her heel and taking flight once more. The city council building wasn't hard to pick out among the other brown and red brick domiciles. Its white marble walls shone brightly in the distance, making the rest of the city look grungy in comparison. Lets get this over with.
