The librarian
Monte was just another high school student. He did things that boys his age did, played around, chased girls, terrorized dorks. He didn't really think of anything outside of his own little life. He lived with his mom, his dad had left a long time ago. She was always at work and most of his time at his home was alone. He didn't mind. He'd just walk around in the woods behind their house, or find some movie to watch. He could make dinner on his own and honestly, nothing Seemed to bad to him. This was his life, that's all there was to it and he didn't mind it. Still though, he was always wishing he could find something fun to do! It was so boring to just sit around. Today was like any other day. He sat on a log in the middle of the woods, reading a book. It was a boom about elves and wizards and things like that. It was the kind of literature his mom would call trash, but she was never around so he didn't care what she thought. He loved to read about this kind of thing. It wasn't long before he fell asleep, right there in the woods.
There was no better place than at the Library. The peace and quiet, the scent of old paper and fading inks were sweet and musty in the old age. It was the place that Landon was on his way to return too. Tucked safely in the elf's leather saddle bag were books that were to be added to the Library's never ending collection of literature. The Library had been this elf's home for many and many years, safely hidden with in the trees of a woods. The Library had been in the care of his family for endless generations. With an idle smile, Landon took the hidden path through the trees, a hand placed carefully over the saddle bag to make sure the books wouldn't get banged about.
Monte woke and heard the sound of someone walking. He curiously looked to see what it was that was making that noise. He saw a boy walking off into what appeared to be nothing. He followed, looking around as he realized that he'd found somewhere hidden, and very well at that. He saw a building, large and old fashioned, rather beautiful. He had to wonder what it was. He opened the door and went in, looking to see if anyone was here. It seemed this was a library. "Hello?" he yelled, wondering if anyone was here at all. He knew of there was someone here they might not like him yelling in a library, but this place seemed abandoned.
Landon was up in one of the fourth floor windows, sitting on the ledge with an enchanted book on his lap. It was one of the books that he had brought to add to the Library's collection and this one had an enchantment on it's pages so what was written inside would be nonexistent to non-magic oriented beings. Long ears twitching at the sound of a stranger's voice, Landon blinked in surprise and peered down past the ladder that he had used to get to the window. Much to his surprise there was a pecurlar figure that appeared to be human near the door which was several two story aisles. Well, how did this get in here? The elf had wondered as he closed the book after memorizing the page number he was currently on. Tucking the book under his arm, Landon made his way down the steep ladder with swift and smooth movements, landing lightly on his leather booted feet once to the ground floor.
Monte kept looking around, pulling booms off of shelves and looking inside, then putting them back where they belonged. He didn't want to mess up the order of them, knowing that if he did, the librarian here would have to fix them. That was if there even was a librarian here. There was a good chance that he was here Aline and that this place hadn't been visited in years. But then, there was no dust and everything was clean, so he figured that meant someone had to have been coming here. He heard someone or something drop lightly on the floor and he whirled around to see that boy from in the woods. He had rather odd ears and seemed to be an elf? Was Monte dreaming? "Um...hi?" He inquired. "My name is Monte. Are you the one that runs this place?" He asked.
Walking up to the stranger, no guest. This person was a guest, anyone who comes to the Library was a guest because books should never be a stranger no matter the being. Stopping just a few steps away from the dark haired guest, the elf smiled and nodded once in greeting before speaking softly. "Greetings and welcome to the Library. My name is Landon Wesily and I'm the book keeper here." Landon said with a perfect bow at the waist, his right hand placed over where his heart would resign, then straightened back up right. "How may I help you, Sir Monte? And if you would please, keep your voice down."
Monte stared at this kid like he was on drugs. "Um..Just Monte is fine..." He said, and couldn't help but think this guy was acting like a butler. "I'm sorry for the noise I made earlier. I just didn't know if anyone was here." He said, dropping his voice almost to a faint whisper. He wondered what this guy was. His ears were so very pointy and long. He coulda sworn he was an elf if such things existed. Maybe Monte was just dreaming. That was a good explanation for this right? He didn't want to think he might be insane. That was a bad thought really. "Um, not to be rude, but are you exactly human? You seem like something else really."
Landon nodded at the clarification of no 'sir' before the guest's name and accepted the apology with a smile. Feeling a bit of relief when the guest had quietened his voice to a more reasonable level of volume, though the expression Monte wore made Landon tilt his head slightly in confusion. He then laughed lightly and smiled when he understood. "Of course, I'm not human. I am an elf, a scholar elf if you don't mind. I beg your pardon if I seem a bit. . . odd. There hasn't been a guest at the Library for a long time and my social skills are . . . lacking."
Monte shook his head. "It's not your social skills that make you odd. I've just never seen an elf before..and certainly not a scholor elf. You see, in my world, we don't even believe in elves and the like. In fact, most people don't believe that anything except humans can even cominicate the way we can. It's odd how unbelieveing they are really. They can trust so many other things, you'd think that the concept of elves wouldn't seem so illogical to them." He was quite curious about this young man. He was pleased with this adventure so far and wondered if the elf had ever seen a human before.
Smiling idly, Landon listened and waited for what felt like a rant to be finished by the guest. "I understand, but please understand just because some humans don't accept that something exists, doesn't mean is isn't there. There is only one world, Monte, but it can be perceived as otherwise." The elf explained then smiled lightly. "But I'm glad that it isn't my social skills has rusted. Now is there anything you need? Are you looking for something?"
Monte shook his head. "No, I just followed you in here. I've never seen a library so nice with so many books." He said with a little smile. He liked it quiet a lot here, it was nice and he felt safe here for so reason. "So, do you live here?" He asked, not knowing if there was anywhere else near here. He hadn't seen a village or anything around here, but then, he wouldn't have ever found the library if he hadn't seen this guy walking in here.
Landon's smile had faded when he heard that the guest wasn't looking for anything in disappointment. "Oh, well that is fine, and thank you. It took many centuries to create such a magnificent collection of literature." The elf said, trying to still appear cheerful, though he was saddened that he wouldn't be able to assist Monte. Nodding lightly then elf motioned a hand to the very far back of the library, hidden behind the seemingly endless aisles where stairs that lead to the level where Landon lived. "I do live here in the lower levels. I need to be here at all times to protect and maintain the Library."
Monte saw that the elf seemed saddened. "I'm sorry if I seemed rude or anything like that. What kind of books do you have here anyway? I'm sure of I'm around I could stop by and read sometimes. I have a lot of free time." He wondered how long it had been since anyone had been here. Even more, he wondered just how old this guy was. "Do you get lonely here? I could always come by here pretty often if you'd like."
Waving his hand quickly to show that he was okay, Landon smiled awkwardly. "No, no. You weren't rude at all, you needn't apologize! Anyways, there are many books with endless topics. There are also manuscripts, scriptures, scrolls, parchments, tablets, even taprestries that tell history, or a tale." The elf said quickly and looked down at the leather bound enchanted book that was still tucked under his arm, falling silent for a moment. "The Library don't get guests very much. Maybe once every decade or so." The blonde elf said softly, then smiled up at the guest. "Monte is welcome to come visit as often and as many times as you wish."
Monte frowned. "You don't get guest for like ten years? My god! You must be really lonely." He couldnt imagine what that must be like. He looked around. "Do you think maybe you could read to me sometime? There might be some stuff her I might can read." aged seen some litature around her that was written in symbols. He wasn't sure what they meant. He only read English. "I'll come by a lot since I'm welcome." He said with a small smile. He looked at the book under Landon's arm. "What's that book?" He asked. He wanted to know what that was. It looked pretty cool.
Smiling lightly with a hand of sadness, Landon nodded as the guest said it must be lonely. It was, very lonely. The smile brightened a bit when Monte asked if he could be read too. "Of course, I'd love to read to you, and thank you." The elf said, excited that he would have live company. "Hmm?" Looking down at the book tucked under his arm, Landon made a sound of acknowledgement. "Oh, this? This is the manuscript of Ah' Garg Karh. It's cover is enchanted thus making the pages within unreadable to those without a magical orientation. See?" The elf explained then held the book out, opening the hard leather bound covers. The pages appeared to be blank, an empty book, to the guest, but the elf could see the symbols coil on the pages. "It's one of the newest additions to the Library."
Monte was pretty glad he could come and have a new friend here. It would be so much better than his normal life. He was confused about what the elf had said about the book until he acctully looked at it. It indeed looked blank to him, though the elf apparently could read it. That was cool, and kind of strange really. "I'm glad to come here." He said. "Things were I live aren't even halfway this pleasant. He said, wondering how much the elf knew of the corrupted human world
"Where you live?" Landon repeated lightly then nodded lightly with a seemingly knowingly smile. "Ah, yes, out there. I never leave the Library unless it's to bring additions for the collection there. . ." He peered up at the window that he always sat up by as he read the literature. Sometimes on those rare occastions, the Library would be too much for him and he was gaze out that window wondering what was happening in the world, but soon after historical events that had been recorded would come to mind and make him rather not know. "Nonetheless, you are welcome to come and enjoy the Library and it's peacefullness."
