They were moving so fast. So much faster than Alden. But their engines didn't have stamina. They had fuel. As long as they had fuel, they would pursue him. Panting, Alden came to a stop at a flat stone and leaned on it. They were far from the city, at least. Far from Athena. His chest burned, and he wanted to keep going, but he couldn't. Looking back at the red vehicle, he started to turn and raise his hand. Something, however, burst from the machine, and attacked him, grabbing his tail and pinning him right to the stone. Alden let out a shocked cry, but didn't dare move his tail for fear of damaging it. Then he wouldn't be able to swim right, and the fin would never grow back. As the submarine drifted over him, Alden gasped, lowering himself as a compartment opened, and something descended. A net, thicker than what the merfolk used to catch their food. It entangled him, and Alden reached up, trying to find the opening.

The huge, metal thing ceased its constant beeping, and suddenly, Alden was enclosed. Darkness... Darkness filled his vision, and for a moment, the water was still. Then his world shook violently, and he felt himself being raised. The stabbing pain in his tail stopped suddenly, and a light flickered on above him. It wasn't like the sun. It was glaring, harsh, and forced him to close his eyes. Then the world stopped moving. He looked down, ahead of him. Humans. They were oddly distorted, and as he finally ripped the net off his head, Alden moved forward, but hit a barrier. Glass. He was in a tank. Staring around, he found that some of the sand and a bit of seaweed had come up with him, and littered a cold white-blue floor. The place looked like an egg with a window that allowed the humans to gawk in at him. As he pressed his hands against the glass, one of them ran off.

"Hey!" Alden tried to call to them, but his voice seemed oddly muted. "Hey, what are you doing here?" They didn't seem to hear him. As though the place were... soundproof? The vessel lurched, and Alden felt as though he were moving without having to work. A bubble system flushed on, moving the water and oxygenating it.

Staring in horror, Diana watched from her craft as Alden was taken inside the human machine. It sat there for a moment, then began to move. She felt her insides breaking. If only she had tried to patch things up between her and Athena faster, this would never have happened. A hand rested on hers. She looked down. Athena floated beside her, her face pale. In a broken voice she said, "He pushed me into hiding and then led them away..." Diana wasn't sure if she should hate Athena or not. Still, this was the most vulnerable she had ever seen Athena and Diana didn't have the heart to hurt her more. Reaching down, she pulled Athena to her and hugged her tight. Hesitantly Athena returned the hug, and began to sob. Neither of them were strong. Neither of them were brave. They had that in common and knew it.

"What should we do? We can't let them take him." Diana wanted to scream but managed to keep her voice low. Athena swam up behind Diana. There was no room for her to get in, but she wrapped her arms in a death grip around Diana and said, "We follow and find a way to steal him back. We might be different, but we can infiltrate their world. Please, don't make me face the others without him. In the end it is my fault..." Diana bowed her head and whispered, "The blame rests on me too. But we must do something about you're bright colors. She slipped out and let Athena slid into the craft. Only her hair was in the way now. Braiding it back and using the necklace to hold it down before turning the machine back on, Diana held on behind her and said, "Now we ride. They dared interfere in our world. Our turn." They drove on after the submarine, careful to stay towards the large rocks and in shadows as much as they could.

Tachigami 12-29-2012 07:42 AM

Alden's insides felt twisted and turned over as the submarine twisted out of sight. It was as if they were following a path they'd already laid out, and if they were to be followed by undesirables, they would be lost quickly. He felt the world tilt left, then right, and from the window above his prison, around the circular light that kept him illuminated, he saw stone pass now and then. As though they were moving through tiny cave-like areas.

The sub shuddered for a moment, and he suddenly felt himself rising. The sensation was horrifying, since he couldn't control it, and it was as though his world had left him behind, all semblance of order shot into oblivion. Panic rising, he moved about, twisting his tail around him and hitting the window. A couple on the other side of the glass glanced his way, but as the sub shuddered yet again, they stood from their places and went around to a door, which opened.

Someone new came in. He was large, square, and the expression on his rather distorted face was of seriousness, which as he approached Alden, became one of shock and awe. Turning to one of them, he thumbed at Alden and pointed to the ceiling of the other side of the glass. As he watched, something started clouding his vision. It was light purple, and began to spread as Alden moved back quickly. "What...?" He waved it away, but it hit the glass and came back at him. Breathing it in involuntarily, he tried to cough it back out, but it constricted his chest, as though putting him to sleep without his wanting to. The water became heavy, thick. Gasping, he went back to the glass and tried to pound on it, but couldn't find the strength. He fell, and closed his eyes on the gawking faces.

maidenroseheart 12-29-2012 07:52 AM

Watching the sub disappear from sight, they felt themselves fill with horror. Diana leaned her head against Athena's back and fought the urge to cry. Athena, who had been extremely quiet, now spoke up. "Diana, humans have cities too. Let's go to the nearest large one and work out a way to get into their society. When the king's parents died, he stepped onto land and formed legs. With legs instead of tails, we could pass off as humans. What do you say?" Diana looked up, hope written on her light blue face, "But what about the rest of our appearance? Our scale color?" Athena smiled at her, "Let me take care of the little sister. My turn to make things better for you." They took off again, this time for the coast.

He woke with a gasp, a flop as though he were a fish out of water. In fact, he was out of water. Only slightly. Blinking to focus his eyes, Alden lifted himself up and looked around. Now the egg he'd been in was clear all around. Lights were on above him, but the tank he was in now was topped. He was on a sand-dusted platform right above a tank of clear water, but he was focused more on his surroundings outside that. The lid above him let his voice echo as he tried to speak, glaring at the humans in attendance. His hair was plastered to him, his jewelry gone. Without them he couldn't hone his power, couldn't do anything. Feeling lightheaded and weak, Alden pushed himself into the water below and was immediately reawakened. But the water was so still. So... clean. He felt uneasy in it. Swimming around the area, which was rather large, he passed many people. They all wore the same thing, and now he couldn't see the sun. He was in a building.

A holding tank.

Men and women stood around him, writing on their little clipboards and conversing with one another, though he couldn't hear them. Just like they couldn't hear him. Rage built up in his stomach---Alden lunged forward, smashing into the side of the tank. "You've ruined the entire race!" He yelled, voice echoing up and out of the water. "You've disrupted the entire ecosystem of the city, the towns and villages, every smaller kingdom! You humans, you human bastards! Give me my things back, you thieves, you killers, murderers, vagrants!" He balled up his fists and pounded the glass, but it wouldn't give. The humans seemed a bit riled, though, and huddled together, comparing what they had written. Alden backed away. He was caught. Caught. What would the others do? Lorett.

Guai.

Diana.

The city...

A month later, at a reception a young lady with beautiful red hair and golden eyes walked into the large banquet hall. Her olive skin radiated with smooth passion as she walked to the table of honor. The other guests paused to acknowledge her as she walked past before returning to their conversations. She was a rising star in the world of elegant sophistication. Her golden dress hugged her slim frame as a gentleman held her seat for her. Adjusting her red veiled shawl as she sat, Athena smiled graciously at her host and joined in the conversation smoothly.

A person of influence, she was what some called a dark horse. Now living in her own suite and hosting parties, she had chances to introduce guests to music they found refreshing and classical. In truth the music was not original to her but from her homeland. However she took full credit for both the lyrical songs and her flute music, gaining wealth and position in human society. This is right where she wanted to be. Among those with power and connections. Tonight she hoped to get a particular man who owned the Marine and Research Center to take an interest in her. Enough of an interest to get her to visit his facility.

******

True to her nature, Diana took on studies in marine life as a scientist. A quiet job where an introvert could flourish, she forced herself to get through the normal daily life of a human and to pick up as much information as she could in her line of work. So far, she had advanced several aspects of marine science that had stumped humans for a long time. Minor things that were not important and considered basic facts in her society, but were priceless to humans. It was this fame that she hoped would get her hired or at least contracted by the Marine and Research Center.

She met up with Athena only once a week, but last she had heard, Athena was doing well for herself. Sometimes, Diana would look around at others and wonder if there were mermaids hidden among the humans too. If others of her kind were nearby. For now though, there was no way to tell. Dressing in blue outfits that complimented her dark blue hair and blue eyes, the pale scientist went about her work. By dressing in heels (that had been hard to learn to walk in) and wearing mini skirts, Diana had been able to avoid situations that would involve swimming. It was to her credit that she had managed to adapt as well as she had so far. If only she could somehow let Alden know he wasn't alone.

Tachigami 12-30-2012 09:07 PM

Today, Alden couldn’t move. His tail was sore, and from time to time, lost scales. Recently he’d requested to be moved to a larger tank, one he could actually move about in, and his captors had done as asked. Only a week ago he’d revealed he could speak English perfectly fine, and that had certainly shocked them all. He’d been put through many intelligence tests using underwater technology, comparing shapes, understanding words, animals, or simple things. Of course he did these without a word, but they were easy on the body. Then they put him through rigorous testing of stamina, strength, speed. One after the other, he was forced to lift weights of various sizes, swim in powerful currents, and was constantly approached to be tested, have blood drawn, hair samples, and each time he was semi-conscious in case he fought back.

Since he’d revealed he could speak, the tests had only become harder. His new home was very, very large, but still claustrophobically little, and now his observers and the researchers had gathered enough confidence to dive into the water with him. But that only forced harder tests, which left him so fatigued he couldn’t even move. Often he was lying on a mound of sand that had been brought in to cover the hard floor of his tank, and sometimes he thought he could see flashes of cameras as a select number of spectators were allowed in to see him. The little ones pounded the glass unchecked, and older ones tapped with their fingers. The incessant noise made him want to scream, but he wouldn’t dare reveal that he could speak to these people. The only thing he could be grateful for was that his captors hadn’t told these gawkers he knew English.

Forcing his arm up, Alden hid his eyes from the light above. He was glad that the water was around him to hide his frustrated, angry tears. He was trapped forever, it seemed. And these people wouldn’t stop testing him until they ran him to death. What of the kingdom? He hoped Guai could take care of things while he was away. Guai, though, knew only how to advise on ideas brought to him, not make them up himself. And Diana and Athena? He was sure Athena made it back to the city. Was sure that he’d ceased searches in the area. After all, a lone merman in the middle of the ocean didn’t lead anywhere. He could be a nomad, or the only one. Though he’d refused to answer questions presented by the researchers. He just couldn’t think anymore.

maidenroseheart 12-30-2012 11:46 PM

The day had finally arrived. She had been hired by the Marine and Research Center. With her faked credentials, they believed her to be a psychologist. That coupled with her recent marine research advances made her perfect for working with a mermaid. However she had been careful never to even hint at such an idea. Their obvious pride and smug suggestions as a surprise had Diana hopeful that this new job would lead her to Alden. If she could just get to him. See her friend and king to know that he was alive. So that he would know he wasn't alone in the human's world.

Riding along in the company's suburban. They reached the facility and drove through the public parking lot. Continuing on around back, the vehicle was stopped and ID cards collected, checked against a list, and returned. Then they drove the rest of the way in pulling into a parking spot near the back doors. Stepping out, she was given a security card of her own to open the back door with. Then she was given a tour of the offices, her desk, and where the staff lounge was for lunch and coffee breaks. It would be a part of her daily life from here on out, including the ride in if she wished. With those formalities out of the way, they led her to her research object of interest.

Walking through the cool corridors, she looked with interest the various windows that displayed tanks of types of animal and plant life. Yet ahead there was a reflecting blue that promised a larger aquarium. Suspense quickened her heartbeat. Rounding that last corner, she stared in open surprise and disbelief at their latest "specimen." Her tour guide looked appropriately proud and was enjoying her surprise. He was quick to assure her the mermaid before her was real. Then began going into details such as male, bone structure, scale length and depth, and other minor details. However she could only see the glazed eyes and drooping fins.

Tachigami 01-01-2013 11:22 PM

The water vibrated as the doors across the room opened, then closed, followed by the voice of what he assumed was some head researcher, the one that was always there when he was put through a test or talked to. He was a middle aged man so Alden could determine, a few sprigs of gray around the dark brown nest around his ears. And who was beside the guide? A young lady with blue hair. Blue hair... And those eyes. Dark. Dark blue. Her face was so familiar. Alden shook his head. Couldn’t be her. But then... That face was too similar to Diana’s.

Gritting his teeth, Alden managed to raise himself up and go to the surface as the head researcher and tour guide led the way up to a scaffold that encircled the tank’s edge. “Alden.” The researcher, who had introduced himself one day as ‘Mark’, crouched down. “This is Diana. She’s here to spend time with you. She’ll be evaluating your mind, your personality, and various other things.”

“Why don’t I just tell you what I think?” Alden said venomously. “I wouldn’t dare hold back!” He dove back down, making it a point to flick water specifically at Mark, and he did so. His tail was in pain, his shoulders and stomach, but Alden could always find a moment to make their ‘job’ a little harder. This fake world of misplaced water, trapped fish and plants, all drifting around in a semi-content and slightly mindless state. It was horrible to see...

maidenroseheart 01-05-2013 02:14 PM

Watching him swim down into the tank, she frowned and looked back up at Mark. "Sir. I understand that there might be friction between the two of you. Still, something seems off. Give me a day or two to study him and interact a little. I'll have a report to you sometime tomorrow on my observations along with any suggestions." He nodded to her and left after wishing her luck. Watching him leave, she was ready to breath a sigh of relief until she saw people wondering around through the glass at the bottom of the tank. Where she had first seen him. Turning, she studied Alden. Diana bit a lip as her eyes skimmed over his body.

All of Alden's movements lacked the natural flow that merfolk were known for. Still, she couldn't outright say such a thing. Instead, she focused on how his movements compared with other marine life, particularly whales and dolphins. With her pad of paper in hand, she started marking how his tail was moving, how he used his arms, the way he turned. It wasn't like he was moving a lot to help her out. Still everything suggested that he was not feeling good. In addition to that, she disdain for the aquarium itself was not helping. Maybe there would be a way to at least convince them to put up a steel netting of some sort in the bay to cage him in. That way he had some swimming space in real water. That would take a lot of convincing. Worth a shot though.

Yet after all these observations, the final one that made Diana particularly sad was that Alden no longer was wearing the tail ring she had made. It was understandable since they obviously had taken all his stuff. Still, that had been a personal gift from her. Alden didn't seem to recognize her. When he had surfaced, his dark piercing eyes had been filled with anger that made his sleek black scales and hair all the more intimidating. There had been no flash of recognition. Unless he was skillfully acting, there was little that she could rely on for comfort. Gulping, she sat there worried. Worried for all of them.

Tachigami 01-06-2013 01:00 AM

Alden hated himself. Hated himself for acting like that around Diana. The Diana he knew. He knew her well, there was just no mistaking her eyes. After all, one's eyes expressed so much, regardless of what the person or creature wanted to show. He watched Mark as he went down the scaffold and through a door somewhere beyond a series of aquariums along the walls. He'd had to deal with Mark for ages, it seemed. Ages. A man that just didn't understand the ways of the merfolk, didn't understand that the balance of the kingdom and its underlying cities, other branching kingdoms, and life in general in the ocean would be severely disrupted by the altercation of the main kingdom's royal family. Though there were no others in Alden's family line, he and others before him had the power to assign and lift other, trusted friends to power should something happen. He'd intended to tell Loretti that she'd be next. Then after her, Diana. After all, Loretti had spent most of her life within the palace. She'd learned from the best. And Diana... Well, she had shown how well she could adapt, if pushed a little. And now she was here.

Alden lifted himself back to the surface, painfully drifting toward where she sat scribbling and pondering. She was here. He should have known she'd show up. She was definitely persistent, and Alden had to commend her on that. It was something any great leader should have within them. Usually he used his arms to help gain speed. But now they were almost dead. He really had to force them up to the lip of the tank. “Hey there, Diana.” He muttered, and leaned against the tank. “Feels like it's been years. But I guess I stopped counting after the fifth day, so everything just... just melded into one another. I can never tell when it's day, when it's night. You have no idea how glad I am to see you. Is your sister okay? I never saw if she got away.” He closed his eyes. So tired. Usually he'd be run all day long. Before Diana had been brought in, he'd had to endure more physicals. Including one that tested his ability to adapt to heat and cold throughout the water. That had been... new.

maidenroseheart 01-08-2013 01:59 AM

Diana watched him swim up. He was barely moving. The powerful creature he was had been reduced to a mere miserable mess of existence. It angered her. Oh she would have a report to turn in. If they really wanted to learn about merfolk and their potential, then they would need to treat their subject a lot better. Her heart wanted to cry at seeing his pain. He was her friend and she felt helpless. Still, she shut that part of her up and closed it off. There was no room for crying here. Not in this complicated and selfish world. Then he talked to her.

Realizing that Alden recognized her meant so much to Diana that her resolve to not cry almost broke. Clinging to her growing hate for humans, Diana allowed her anger to strengthen her. "You've been here for only a month. Sorry it took me so long to catch up to you. Athena is alright. She came along too. Using her musical skills, she is a rising celebrity in the human world. You might see her touring the place soon. Athena is getting cozy with one of the sponsors of this place. If you see her, don't feel betrayed by her actions. That is all it is, actions. Not thoughts." Diana bit her bit, and made some more notes. He needed better nourishment too if his scale color was any indication. Even a fish would have been care than this.

Tachigami 01-08-2013 10:05 PM

Alden’s joints tried to scream at him as he kept himself on the side of the tank. He shuddered. “It’s okay, Diana. I figured you two could put something together. I just... I can’t think anymore. I could have... I could have done something. A long time ago. It’s as if the researchers are trying to keep me... weak. Weak, so I don’t fight back too much. If anything, you have to tell them to stop testing me. I can’t take it. I’m too tired...” He breathed hard. His arms wanted to let go.

Gritting his teeth, Alden pulled himself up a little more. “I’ve never made a friend with anyone as quickly as I have with you.” He admitted almost breathlessly. “It’s a great pleasure to know someone like you, Diana. I just hope things can become relatively normal again, someday soon. I have some things to tell you, I just can’t here.” His shoulders gave out, and he finally drifted back down under the water. He picked up his tail a bit, but only enough to be able to move to the bed of sand he’d been given a few days after his capture. He’d never, ever felt so weak. The vulnerability was insulting, and a bit unnerving. He wanted to go back home. See Guai and Loretti and his people and visit his parents’ graves. He even wanted to take on the guise of a human, but couldn’t because his golden items were taken. Even the one Diana had made for him.

maidenroseheart 01-10-2013 10:26 AM

Feeling rather sick and unable to focus, Diana wondered just what influence she could possibly have on those who had employed her. Still, she would have to do her best. Alden was, after all, their only specimen. She would have to think in those terms and how to exploit such thinking patterns. It was insensible and heartless, but there was no other alternative that might save his life. For at this rate, Alden would not survive the year. That was not the outcome for his life she wanted to see. So if that meant hardening herself, somehow, into the monster the humans were then so she would.

Standing and working her way down the scaffolding, Diana remembered the pain of turning into a human without the aid that Alden had with his royal jewelry. She wouldn't have come through the process if she had known the pain of gaining legs. However now it was those very legs that allowed her the ability of being near Alden. So it wasn't completely a bad thing being human in appearance. Turning and walking back around to the walkway that went past his tank, she reached the lounge and settled down on a couch. Crossing her legs, she propped her clipboard up on her knees and settled in to write more observations. This time with cold, calculating eyes.

*****

Athena undressed out of her heels and skimpy dress that she had worn at the last concert. It had been a long day. The morning had been spent in preparations. The afternoon with fans and the celebrities who wanted to be in on her growing fame. She didn't care for them except for the one person who could gain her access to the facilities holding Alden. That was the only thing that she wanted. To be near her king, the one who had saved her life by offering his own as a decoy.

Getting into a black outfit of jeans and a hoodie, Athena wrapped her bright hair back into a bun and pulled her hood up. Turning off the lights of her place, she waited until her eyes adjusted to the darkness. Then she slipped out the bathroom window and crept in the twilight towards the harbor. It was a good five minutes walk but soon she was in sight of the ocean.

Reaching the waters edge, she slipped carefully down to the lowest stone ledge. There had to be a way to personally deliver messages. However so far she had had no luck. So she had done the next best thing. Seaweed paper with a note written in their alphabet the details of which city Alden was being held in and which beach she was releasing the information. So far there was no response to her messages. She assumed that none of the bottles had found their way to any merfolk. No one had ever been here to meet her yet. At least the ink would disperse after a week. No human would have time to determine or decode them if they did get a hold of these.

Tachigami 01-13-2013 09:47 PM

Guai was tired. He hadn’t slept well in a week. He had never been in the role of leader, and now, he had little choice. Loretti was focusing on the ill, those that had fallen to a virus not long after Alden’s vanishing. The human presence was gone now, and Alden, Diana, and Athena, her sister, as well. Either Alden had been caught and the sisters were searching for him, or it was the other way around. Guai disliked the idea of any negative outcome. And if they were all captured... He shook his head, leaving his room in a bad mood. He couldn’t focus...

Loretti approached from the hall to his left. “Father, another’s fallen ill. A child.”

“Take them on, I’ll be there in a moment.”

Loretti paused, studying her father’s face. He seemed to have aged decades in just a few weeks. “Okay.” She spun and took off, flitting out of sight in a moment. Guai hung suspended in the still water for a moment, watching the clear pipes along the walls deliver warming magma to each room in the palace. None had died yet from their illness, but now it was beginning to attack the young. He didn’t know how much longer the first group could fight.

“Guai!” Tevin appeared suddenly, coming from the direction Loretti had gone. “A couple patrols came across several bottles floating near the city, along the surface. Two of them are too faded to read, but the third is... recent. We couldn’t bring them down---the ink wanted to run once they hit water.”

“What do they say?”

“Well... Alden is alive, and being kept in a surface city by the shoreline.”

Guai’s tired eyes widened. “What? Where?”

“They give specific coordinates to the beach, a secluded place we can meet the messenger, the sister of Diana.”

“They’re all alive...” His voice was low, but still carried. “We have to meet her.”

“Shall I gather a party?”

“No.” Guai went past Tevin. “Only you. When Loretti is free, tell her to come to the city’s front entrance, and let the guards know we’re leaving, and bringing Alden back as soon as possible.”

“Yessir.” Tevin turned and almost ran into another guard as he fled through the hall. “GUAI.” He yelled involuntarily. “Guai, the nearby kingdom. They’re threatening attack, saying that we’ve broken order---”

“Keep watch on them.” Guai turned to face the guard. “Lorett and I are going to find Alden.”

“You know where he is?” The guard grew wide-eyed.

“Yes. I don’t know how long it’ll take, so keep everyone calm. I want you to be in charge for now.” He lifted one of the few gemmed necklaces off and handed it over. “This is my gift to you until we return, until we bring Alden and the others back.” He nodded, something that was returned by the guard, and he swam away. They were finally getting somewhere...

Eating a hardy breakfast was very difficult for Diana. She leaned towards salads as much as possible, unable to stomach the meats of this world nor their desserts and fruits. It was all too sweet. The breads and pastas too dry. If she took the time to go to a Asian restaurant, she could get it seaweed soup. However even those were abominable to her, warm and seasoned beyond enjoyment. So she made due with her salads and worried about her energy. Diana figured if worse came to worse, she could always rely on her anger for fuel. She would need to work on breaking Alden out of here fast though.

Hearing the beep of a car horn outside, she picked up her purse and walked out the door. Locking it behind her, she climbed into the back seat of the company mini van and let them drive her to work. Going through the gates and around back, she climbed out, waved goodbye to them, and used her pass card to get inside. Time to create a list of reasons for an outdoor cage in the harbor. Anything that would be beneficial for the company was one sarcastic thought that went through her brain. Hopefully the director would be willing to view her suggestions in a positive light. Perhaps should should stick something ridiculous in her report. Or two things. Things that could be taken out as concessions. Humans were like that.

*****

Sleeping in late, it was with a groan that Athena woke up and rolled out of bed. Literally. She found it amusing to take the human term and apply it to her life. Picking herself off the floor, she showered and carefully applied her makeup after doing her hair. Stepping into the kitchen, she picked up the phonebook and slipped through to the food section. Dialing up a breakfast restaruant, she ordered a diverse meal. Once she hung up, she grinned. Athena loved the different foods in the human world. Some of the humans were actually really friendly and Athena had come to like some aspects of their culture.

Breakfast, or lunch at this point, arrived and Athena tipped big before taking the food inside. Propping her feet up once settled on the couch, Athena turned on the TV and began to surf the news channels for an idea of how the human's various aspects of life were going. Eating and studying this way was enjoyable for her. Still, something nagged at her. How was she supposed to be able to help Alden? She still hadn't gotten into the research section of the facilities, though her patron loved to show off the public areas to her.

It didn't matter. She had a practice session this afternoon and then the evening was hers. She would have to prepare another message if she found the small cove empty yet again. It was a time consuming task but Athena felt it was a small price to pay for causing Alden to be caught. Something she could never forgive herself for. She would gladly change between human and mermaid as many times as he demanded in penance. It was a brutally painful process for her, but Athena was certain that she deserved no less.

Tachigami 01-24-2013 09:36 PM

Alden's joints were more sore today than they had ever been. Now he couldn't even allow himself to float up to the surface of the tank. When someone went by that wasn't Diana, he flinched away and hid his face. He kept losing scales. Now the bed of still sand was littered with his scales, which flaked off as he became more stressed and lethargic. What other creatures went through this type of humiliation? He'd heard of zoos. These humans didn't respect life. They stole rare and beautiful creatures from their native lands and put them in shoddy representations of where they lived, or caged them entirely, like they had Alden himself. Some, like Alden, were also put through these endurance tests, which he'd started rejecting fully. No one dared lift him out of the tank on their own, so he'd gotten away with it.

Of course no one would listen to him should he say he wouldn't be able to do something. Perhaps they took him as a child. Perhaps they didn't understand what he'd said when he noted his true age. Or they just didn't believe him... He could almost see his parents---they had never been captured in all their lives. They'd never even allowed themselves to be glimpsed. Now he felt like a failure alongside a useless excuse for a merman. What good would he do his kingdom? What right did he have to call the kingdom his? He was a disgrace to his family, to his parents. They would probably turn their backs and shake their heads and sigh in disappointment. The thought brought tears to his eyes that no one could see underwater. “Sorry...” He whispered, draping his arms over his head. “I could have done better.”

None of them had realized exactly how quickly they would have to swim to make it to the place described on the note, and only after they'd nearly made it did Loretti recall Diana's new vehicle. It hadn't been touched since the disappearance of Alden and the sisters, though it could have saved a lot of energy. Regardless, they made it before sunup, breaching the water only slightly to get a clear look around. They were off the coast of a city, bustling and bright, and even from their distance they could hear the life. Small boats and other water vessels bobbed around them, so they ducked down below again and went right to find the cove Athena had written of. They did, and it was one that faced the sun as it came up. Bringing themselves out of the water and onto the flat stone eroded smooth, Guai looked to Tevin. “You have everything, yes?”

Tevin nodded as he hefted himself up, following a bag outfitted with thick plastic. “Found everything recently---I don't think their owners will miss it.” Unzipping the bag, he revealed dry clothing---two sets of male clothes, one of female. “We'll be able to wear this for at least a day, but then humans might start to get suspicious. They like to change every day.” He tossed them into three separate piles where the water had yet to rise to the stone.

“Seems like a hassle.” Loretti shook her head and tossed her hair over her shoulder. “Well, better now than never---we don't know how long Athena will be. Come---” She held out both hands, allowing Guai to take one and Tevin to take the other before submerging themselves slightly in the water. It was difficult to turn outside the cave of the previous kings and queens, but with their combined power and the gems of their jewelry which magnified it, their legs sprouted without much effort, but with a bit of prickling pain throughout their skin and within their bones. They kept their eyes generally closed out of respect as each changed into the respective clothes, turning their backs in a semi-circle as Guai put on brown jeans, a black belt, and a white short-sleeved shirt. Tevin settled with khaki shorts, a sleeveless tan shirt, and a lightweight jacket. Loretti was given a light blue skirt and white sleeveless shirt, tied with a thin cloth belt.

Slipping into shoes, from a pair of sneakers to thin sandals, they finally looked at one another and had to laugh. Their legs were weak, however, so as they did, they sat away from the water. “I look so strange.” Loretti said as she bent over a small puddle nearby. Her hair was still saturated with water, and she gathered it up to twist it out. Guai shook his head. “It'll be a little strange, yes, but this way, when Athena comes, we'll be ready.”

“What if she needs us to go back?” Tevin asked. He couldn't shake that possibility.

“Well, you'll have to go back, Tevin.” Guai said. “It won't take the two of us to change you back. Your power will be magnified when you're back in the water---hasn't anyone told you that?”

Tevin shook his head, but said no more about it. As the sun sent bright, streaming rays into the cove, water lapped at the stone and the three sat against the walls behind them. They'd made it early, hopefully Athena would be there soon.

The marble hallway that led to the main office of the company echoed with the clicking heels that strolled down them firmly. The young lady made a direct approach, nothing holding her back. Diana felt like her feelings had been burned from her soul. It was almost with dead eyes that she now started on her latest mission. Seeing Alden in such ruin had been the last straw to let her allow her final mask of human to slide into place. No compassion or mercy remained. Just the goal.

It was all written out. Her report was complete. The evaluations and possible advice she had been sent were in the manila envelope in her hand. It was simple how she laid her plan out to them. It would be up to them to follow through. Her language she had chosen to communicate in would be understandable to them. Alden, as property of the company, needed better care. He was valuable to them most if he was kept in good physical condition and not overused so often. It would save them money that would otherwise be spent in possible healthcare and tank clean up.

There was the political side to consider. If the public became aware, and Alden was only valuable to them if the public could eventually become aware of him, then they would need to safeguard against groups such as human rights activists, animal rights activists, etc. It would be best if he was adopted by a political party, who would want someone showy, in order to gain further funding and support later.

This meant that Alden, once a shiny specimen, needed to have his health examined. The scales were falling off and those that remained were dull. No one wanted a limp rag to look at. They wanted something spectacular that would reel their senses. This meant getting Alden into a new environment. And she had an answer for that as well.

It was a simple matter of building a large cage out in a nearby cove. Conveniently next to land this company owned, but also more importantly where Athena had quick access to. The large cage with strong metal bars would be strong enough to contain Alden even after his strength returned. Who would sabotage it after all. The fresh salt water that he was used to would steady his psychological state. By observing his interaction with any marine life that floated or swam in, better ideas of what he might eat or do for physical well being purposes could be seen.

Her list was endless. Business. All proposals to get Alden out into the open where help could find and plan a way to rescue him. Once he was safe, she would ensure that this company didn't get a hold of him again. Reaching the door at the end of the hall, Diana knocked and reached for the handle.

The late afternoon sun was bothering Athena as she went out for a jog. Taking a different route than normal, she started earlier and worked her way back towards the cove. She didn't relish the fake smiles she had endured and would endure. Still, she finally was getting somewhere. At the end of the day, she was told that she would get to witness the transfer of an extraordinary creature the company had recently acquired. This was hopefully her chance to see Alden.

Diana had ignored her when they had seen each other earlier. Athena had tried to approach her younger sister later, but been pushed aside. She might not have grown up with Diana or been very close, but she knew cold hearts when she saw them. After all, she had displayed such before when her jealousy had gotten the better of her. This new persona that Diana was developing was being real. Athena dreaded where it might lead.

The consequences of her self-centeredness was further far reaching than she had anticipated. So despite the welcome news that she was looking forward to tomorrow afternoon, it was with a heavy heart that Athena turned off the sidewalk and down a narrow trail towards the water's edge and the rock ledges below.

Frustration, fatigue, and anger at himself and his keepers sent Alden into a useless spin of wordless showmanship. He'd resulted to banging his head slowly on his side of the tank, in a constant, heart-beat pattern, ignoring words to stop, to cease, to calm down. All he could hear was the thud of the hit, the slight jar of his skull resounding under hair and skin. He'd hoped to feel a bit more at ease when Diana was around, knowing she and Athena, perhaps the others, would be helping in some way, but now he just felt useless. And seeing Diana so detached had... cut his heart out of his chest, in a way. Now he only felt cold, as if someone had filled his ribcage with ice from the Arctic oceans far, far away.

Now all he could hear were the combined voices of his mother and his father. "What kind of son did we have? One that is so quickly, so flawlessly snatched up by the threat of humanity? Trusting himself to such a length? A failure! A disgrace to the royal bloodline! Neptune and Poseidon should be shaking their heads in disappointment!" He gritted his teeth, banging his head a little harder without realizing it. "Alden! You little fool, perhaps we should have had a second child? One that would not go out searching for one, single mermaid when an entire city, an entire kingdom and outlying colonies rely on you, solely on you!"

He reared back, hitting his temple once more and feeling a sharp pain suddenly scream through his head. He was alone, so no one saw him fall onto the stagnant bed of sand with wide eyes staring at the fish on the other side of the room. He watched for a moment as the white angelfish flitted away, then closed his eyes. This was their plan. To weaken him so he wouldn't even think about escaping, or using his power, or somehow becoming human. Now all he wanted was to be a human. That was all he wanted now. To become human and run away, perhaps go back to his mother, his father, apologize to them for his insolence. His stupidity. Apologize to Diana and give the throne to someone who, perhaps, weren't so foolish as he. Alden closed his eyes. Suddenly he felt so... detached...

They had gotten around to standing, crouching, and stretching their legs, quickly getting used to them and their soft, stretchy skin as opposed to hard, colorful scales. Tevin kept away from the water so it wouldn't flood his shoes, which were thick, somewhat heavy hiker's shoes. Loretti was able to move close to the water's edge and crouch there, studying herself a bit more. Her hair had dried, and was dusted with dry salt water amongst its wild curls. It would take some time to get the salt out of it as opposed to Guai and Tevin, who could brush it, more or less, with a few waves of the hand.

Guai's keen eyes were watching the small path down to the cove, stretching his legs periodically. It was odd having two legs, rather than one tail. From time to time they all had to fight the desire to lock up around the knees. He'd brought his bag with him to the surface, the bag containing some of the calming crystals he'd given Alden a while back, and a couple bottles of thick serum to disinfect and prepare wounds for wrapping and patching. For a moment, he studied the contents, the bag wrapped around his waist, then looked up again.

"Athena!" He called as she approached. Loretti and Tevin looked around and stepped up to the path. "We're not sure how many notes you sent off." Guai continued. "We just found them, to be honest."

"We're so glad to have heard from you." Loretti noted. "We'd begun losing hope!" Tevin didn't speak---it didn't seem his place to do so. He was, after all, a guard. One of many.

The boat cranes strained in the silence of the harbor. The further most edge had been designated as the building area. As soon as workers returned from their lunch break, a surprise had been waiting them. Orders for an outdoor cage. Something that could keep small sharks inside. Something strong enough that a whale couldn't escape. Now supplies were being gathered and delivered. The entire resources of the company made at the disposal of the engineering team. With unusual fervency, quickly went over basic designs and worked to compile them into a workable solution. This had to be finished soon. The orders were explicit. Spend all afternoon, evening, night... working until complete. They wanted to go home at some point. Overtime pay was not sought after. This ocean cage must be built and built now.

The first part of the process had already been started. Submarines with their robotic toys were already at the bottom of the harbor. They worked to clear the ocean floor of debris that might have accumulated over the years from human traffic above. Metal, plastic, glass, and other trash were picked up and disposed of. The floor was removed of anything dead. The sand was smoothed out and left to ripple naturally from the ocean currents. Plants were not messed with nor were the natural rock formations that existed in small quantity. They were almost finished.

The second part waited above, getting the final pieces pulled together before their entrance to this stage. A large cage, the size of a large two story house, was being constructed. Made out of steel bars, it was having the last minute modification of being covered in rubber. A side note to those orders said something about avoiding self-harm. The workers shrugged it off and continued as instructed. This large cage had four wall and a roof. On the outside at each corner were the rings to attach to anchors. The anchors waited by the cranes for deployment.

On shore were engineering crews working with the electronic devision. Setting up a secondary cage to surround the first. It's purpose was for security reasons. To house and protect the cameras that would provide live feed and sound back at the research facility, the monitoring boats above, and the security station on shore. Ensuring there was both wireless and cable capability for those cameras and microphones was proving a slight challenge, but they figured they would have it set up and ready that night when it was time to install them.

Watching the work below her, Diana stood at an observation deck that overlooked the harbor. Everything was going to plan. Soon Alden would be back in the ocean and unable to be touched by the humans personally. They would be forced to sit back and monitor from outside the cage. No more tests. Just observation. Something she convinced them they needed a lot more of. Turning, she headed back to the car. Her driver waited to open the door for her. As she approached, he handed her a file and closed the door after her. Sitting there until he climbed in and started driving, she opened the file and looked over the medical report. Alden had really done himself in this time. Looked like he was in the hands of health workers now. A part of her silently pleased, "Please hold on Alden. I'm trying to hurry, but you have to hold on."

Hearing her name, Athena looked up at the palace employees with a racing heart. Running the last stretch towards them, she knelt before while struggling to hold back her tears. It was her fault all this had happened. If she had been a better sister. If she hadn't left the city. If she had paid attention to Alden when he tried to warn her. Bitter tears falling down her cheeks, Athena searched for words to apologize with. There was none. Nothing she said would make things right.

So instead she focused on what she could do. Information. They could use information. "I'm sorry I couldn't do more. Alden has been mistreated at the company headquarters. Diana has worked to ensure his transfer to an outdoor facility. His poor health, both mental and physical, has worked in her favor. I haven't heard any updates, but it seems that tomorrow he is going to be transferred. It was to be tonight, but the last message I received moved it to tomorrow. Most likely in the afternoon." Keeping her head down, she clenched her hands against the stone beneath her knees. Telling them more was useless. That Diana was no longer the sweet mermaid they knew wasn't relevant. Something for her to fix since she messed everything up in the first place.

They periodically dumped powder into the water that was almost constantly circulating out of his new, slightly narrower tank. It dissolved quickly, tinting the water a slight greenish-blue and gave it the slight taste of some type of metal and limestone mix. Alden was able to move, but not much, so he resigned himself to lying limply on the soft, non-sand bed that the tank had been padded with. This time he wasn’t able to be observed from more than a few narrow windows, as the entire tank had been padded the same way to avoid another self-inflicted injury. The lights above the tank was pale blue now, easy on the eyes, but he couldn’t look up. His head was in desperate pain, and they had sedated him to make it easier to patch the wound on his head.

He was still groggy. Whatever they had shot him with had only recently worn off, and he had a feeling whatever they were mixing with the tank water every several hours was there to help keep him unwilling to go about repeating what he’d done before. And he didn’t feel like moving enough to do so. He could probably go up to the surface and try to pull himself up and out of the tank, just to see what they’d do. He felt as though he were close to death anyway. A swift current suddenly picked up and a powerful sucking sound gave way to a cooler current that signaled the circulation of the tank’s water, and Alden could hear voices outside the opaque walls. He closed his eyes, but still listened. A slight, even thudding suddenly came through, and a voice: “You’ll be outta there soon.”

***

Loretti shook her head, and fell onto her knees in front of Athena. “Sweetie, it’s not your fault. You didn’t know any of this would happen.” Kindly, she lifted Athena’s face. “We know you didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”

“Besides, there’s little time to play the blame game, isn’t it?” Guai asked, and stepped forward, lifting both of them. “Alden’s in a bad state, you say?” he shook his head. “I think I can help him get over his health issues, but anything mental he’ll have to work through himself. It’s as though all this correlates with the problems in the kingdoms...” Turning, he looked to Tevin.

Tevin, noting the look he was given, stepped around. “An illness is going around under the waves, almost as though it came when Alden was taken. Things are... spiraling downward quickly. If you and Diana got close to whomever is holding Alden, it’d be a good idea to get going with whatever plan you two decided on.” Loretti and Guai nodded quickly.

maidenroseheart 02-28-2013 07:18 AM

Allowing herself to be pulled to her feet, Athena forced her guilt to the back of her mind. There would be plenty of time to torture herself with that later. Right now there was the plan. Or was. "Diana was setting up plans to have an outdoor cage built at the edge of the harbor. Something that would allow the humans to feel safe since they do not know of our weapons. Alden will be moved there soon. But something has gone wrong and it was delayed. On top of that, Diana has cut contact with me and won't respond to me when I try to talk to her." Clenching her hands at her sides to avoid hugging herself, Athena forced her calm face to not break down. "We can go either to the harbor or to my house. Whichever you want first. On the way, tell me about this sickness. What are it's symptoms and how is it spread?" It was as if the world was coming apart. Something she wasn't sure how to deal with. Her family was split. Her home in danger. Her king threatened. The aqua world in chaos. Was this some sort of apocalypse or something?

Tachigami 03-02-2013 05:00 AM

Loretti and Tevin followed as Guai stepped forward. “Perhaps it’d be best to go to your house first, Athena. I feel we’d do better if we took a while to get our minds on the right track and catch up. But I swear, Athena, I don’t know what this illness is. It’s not written in any old texts, and the symptoms are all reminiscent of a combination of things, each unrelated.” He shook his head. “It begins with muscle aches, around the shoulders and neck and often in the tail joints. Then headaches, partial blindness and a lethargic behavior that doesn’t allow one to travel far. After that the fever sets in, and skin lesions that resemble burns and shedding scales.”

“It doesn’t seem to be spread through contact.” Tevin said at last. “It’s randomized, popping up in all the villages around the kingdom and now, the city itself. We’ve even heard of far-off towns and cities beginning to come down with this same illness. Eventually the fever becomes deadly if we can’t get it under control.”

“It started two weeks ago.” Loretti added, and almost stumbled a bit as they left the cove. Her knees were still a bit weak. “So far four people have died, two children among them. We have a feeling it has to do with Alden’s vanishing from the sea, but Guai wants to see it from a more... logical point.”

Guai nodded. “I’m sure it’s got something to do with the humans themselves. Perhaps their pollution so close to the cities... I just don’t know.” He sighed. “But we have to put everyone’s mind at ease, and the best way to do that is to get Alden back, and you and Diana.”

maidenroseheart 03-30-2013 01:56 PM

Athena looked, with bewildered eyes, back between Tavi, Guai, and Loretti. Heart filling with worry, she bit a lip as she tried to think straight. Illness? Unknown and deadly? Focusing on her steps as they reached the edge near the sidewalk, she worked to form words. Finding her voice, she managed a calm reply, "If Guai is right, then Diana would be a good way to research the pollution theory. Filling the role as scientist, she has access to their marine data." Reaching up on the ledge to help balance herself, Athena stepped up high and into the grass. Turning, she offered Loretti her own slim hand as a way up. With a weak grin at the older lady, she offered a silent apology in that moment for the emotional trouble Diana might have been because of her own negligence.

Tachigami 04-08-2013 11:38 PM

Guai nodded. “No on in the city has been able to research modern human pollution manners. Since Diana has first-hand knowledge and ability, I’m sure she’ll already know enough.”

Tavi looked to Guai. “And no doubt we’ll be able to find our own information too. I hear it’s extremely easy to find out just about anything you’d need to know about modern human society.”

Loretti smiled a bit, and looked up to Athena, accepting her hand and pulling herself up as the boys climbed up themselves. “Sweetie, I hope you don’t blame yourself.” She said, recognizing the apologetic look on the younger mermaid’s face. “It’s not your fault---not many in the city knew just how close the human threat was, and that was for good reason. We just didn’t want to cause worry or panic. Hm... I suppose that’s not of concern anymore.” She added regretfully.

Guai stepped forward. “Athena, do you know when we’ll be able to get close to Alden? Or if there’s even a way to do so? I... have the horrible feeling there’s something wrong with him.” He put a hand to his chest, willing away the pulling, empty sensation that overcame him when he spoke Alden’s name.
