"Nah, not quite." Kaladin grinned. "I showed her the garden, though." He leaned against the railing as he checked the unicorns over, making sure they all looked happy and healthy.
Seamus raised an eyebrow.
"The garden?" he asked. "You've never taken anyone there before, not even those flings a while back." |
Kaladin nodded. "I know. It's been a while since we've been out there to visit Mom too." He didn't comment any more on taking Hazel there, letting Seamus puzzle it out himself.
"You really do like her, don't you?" Seamus asked. He grinned. "You realize it's going to turn into a huge social thing if you intend to marry her."
Kaladin shrugged. "Oh well. I'm equivalent to a lord now, so they can't actually legitimately protest. But they can mutter all the want." He grinned briefly.
"But just think," Seamus teased, "if you do marry her, it can't be a small, quiet thing. Everyone on that level of society will have to attend."
Kaladin made a face at that. "Well, we'll just have to deal with it. Maybe we'll elope and then do the big fancy wedding for everyone else. Or we can do the ceremony and then leave them all to the reception while we escape."
He paused and then grinned. "Of course, you realize that you'll be required to attend my wedding." |
Seamus pulled a face.
"You sure I can't just leave a gift and skip out?" he asked. Then he grinned. "Kidding. Although you just admitted that you want there to be a wedding. You planning on asking her any time soon?" |
"No, not for a little while. She's still a noble, she expects the whole courting bit." Kaladin shrugged. "I don't mind."
"Translation: you want to propose now, but you're not certain she'll say yes," Seamus said. He grinned a bit, though he was only partially teasing.
Kaladin rolled his eyes and hit his brother, although not very hard. "Oh shut up," he muttered. "Like you're having better luck with Brit?"
"Hey, I'm having some luck," Seamus replied, rubbing his arm a bit. "She likes it when I kiss her senseless, but we haven't gone much beyond that."
Kaladin snorted and shook his head. "Well, you better get in what you can while you can. I get the feeling she's going to turn into a workaholic once babies start arriving." He paused. "Moreso than she already is, anyway."
Seamus snorted.
"I'll be right there next to her," he said. "I know how to deal with my woman. When she's being a workaholic, I work right along with her, and then take care of her by making her take breaks when I know she needs them." |
Kaladin grinned when he realized something.
"You know, Seamus," he said, his voice deceptively casual. "I think that's the first time I've heard you refer to her as 'your' woman." |
Seamus froze. Busted.
"So what?" he replied, trying to seem casual. |
Kaladin grinned. "So you like her more than you're letting on. Sounds like you might want to take her to the garden soon too, little brother."
"Maybe," Seamus admitted. The thought had crossed his mind more than once. "If I could ever get her off the ranch."
Kaladin snorted. "Tell her she's taking a rest day," he said with a shrug. "I can get Hazel to agree to it, and if Hazel tells her to I'm sure she'll listen." He paused. "Although she might argue."
"Easier said than done," Seamus replied. "I had to physically push her to the dorms to get her to sleep after she pulled an all-nighter."
Kaladin snickered. "I'm sure you'll think of something," he said with a grin. Because he was allowed to be totally unsympathetic when it came to this.
Seamus rolled his eyes and gave his brother a shove.
"At least I haven't had to resort to drastic measures yet, lordling," he teased. |
Kaladin snickered and shook his head, looking over at Brit when she walked past. She blinked at them both before she grinned and headed off over to the gryphon enclosure, slipping inside.
"Be sure to keep your jaw attached, little brother. And don't get caught ogling her." |
"Shut up," Seamus muttered back as he watched Brit go by. He managed to tear his eyes away from her before it could turn into flat-out staring.
Kaladin snickered and shook his head. "You're in so far over your head it's kind of funny," he said, grinning as he looked at Seamus. "For me, anyway."
