A few of the sheep tried to get to him, jumping at his feet. Brit didn't have a problem getting them to move enough so she could sit on the ground, letting them swamp her. She didn't mind, really. They were cute and happy and fluffy.
Seamus just watched as she was overtaken by the sheep. Even he had to admit, they were cute. And they were just so blissfully happy all the time, it was sort of contagious.
Brit was quite happy to just play with the sheep for a while, until she decided she had to go check on the rest of the animals. So she got up, making sure all the sheep were fine, before she clambered out again. They all stared after her and Seamus hopefully.
"It's as if all they need to be perfectly happy is someone to feed them and snuggle them," Seamus commented as he helped Brit out of the corral. "They really are perfect pets."
Brit nodded vigorously. They would be perfect pets. Well. Almost. So long as they had someone to cuddle them and pay attention to them. They wouldn't be good decoration pets, not like the ceryneians were.
"Anyways, come on," Seamus said, holding out a hand to her. "I know there are others you wanted to see."
Brit smiled and took his hand again, walking around with him to see all the rest of the little ones. She was extremely pleased with how things were going so far. Especially with the little unicorn foals. They were darling and playful and already relaxed around the two of them.
"All of the numbers are just about in, as far as I can tell," Seamus commented. "Just a few of the sheep and one of the gyphons."
Brit nodded, stopping by the ceryneian corral to look at them for a while. They were all grazing, just sort of hanging out, although one of them, the big buck, watched the two carefully.
"The little silver is the one being sold," Seamus murmured to Brit when they stopped by the corral. "Silver was specifically requested. I think the others are fair game, though."
Brit nodded. Hazel had said as much earlier, just not which one was being sold. So she looked at the other two little ones, sizing them up. They shouldn't be too difficult to work with, not so long as she started while they were little.
Leaning over, Seamus put a little kiss on her cheek.
"So, seen what you need to see for now?" he asked. |
Brit nodded. She was satisfied that all was going well and had not crashed and burned in her absence.
On the other side of the ranch, Hazel was enjoying a bit of quiet as she watched the selkies. After all of the social events of the last several days, the quiet of her ranch was nice. It helped that Brit was back and all was right with the world.
Kaladin wandered his way over there, standing next to her as he watched the selkies play. They were having a grand time at the moment, since he'd dumped a large floating ball in their lake.
After a moment or two, Hazel unconsciously leaned a bit closer to him. Now all was right with the world.
Kaladin smiled and pulled her a little closer, settling his arm loosely around her waist. Yes, he was definitely pleased with life now.
"I've registered the ranch for the next Expo," Hazel said after a few minutes of silence. "Even if the trial run of the sheep doesn't work, we still have plenty to take."
Kaladin nodded. "I'm sure the sheep will sell. We'll just have to be careful to keep our numbers even enough that we can continue breeding. Especially if we want to see how many colors we can get."
"I trust you to know what you're doing in that regard," Hazel said with a small smile.
"Good." Kaladin smiled and kissed her cheek, content to just stand there and watch for a while. It was one of those life was good moments.
Hazel turned faintly pink when he kissed her cheek, but still rested her head on his shoulder. She grinned when the littlest of the three selkies got up out of the pond and squicked up to the fence to stare at them with big, dark eyes.
Kaladin laughed quietly and reached over, rubbing the selkie's head. "They still like to have someone swim with them," he said quietly. "I got in a day or two ago and they were happier than usual. Not that it's hard to make these guys happy." For which he was profoundly thankful.
Hazel nodded and glanced at the others in the pond wistfully. It might have been nice to try getting in with the selkies, especially in the hottest part of the summer, but she didn't know how to swim.
Kaladin noticed how wistful she looked and paused. Well, there was an idea...
"You know, places in the city sell bathing suits," he said quietly. "So you can get one specifically for swimming. And the pond has a shallow end that gradually slopes down into the water. So you could stand easily there. And, maybe, if you wanted, I could teach you how to swim? I remember you mentioned a while ago that you don't know how." |
