Elea nodded and stripped the rest of the way, stepping into the water before pulling her seal skin on. The skin was easily as large as she was in her human skin, and once she'd finished a harbor seal blinked at Lotus before darting off through their tunnel to the ocean proper.
Lotus grinned and dove into the tunnel after her friend, letting her legs change into her tail. She took a deep breath of salt water and followed Elea out into the open water. Oh yes, this was what she needed.
Elea couldn't breath underwater, but she made it through the tunnel quickly and easily, moving up to the surface to look around. Dark eyes surveyed the area before she slipped back under the water, leaving barely a ripple.
Lotus stretched a little and sighed happily, running her fingers through her hair and enjoying the feel of it. Then she drifted down to lay on the sand for a moment or two, just looking up at the moon through the water.
Elea floated up near the top for a few moments before turning sharply and diving down under the water, enjoying swimming for several moments.
Lotus grinned and took off after her, initiating a game of tag. It felt good just to swim and play for a while.
Elea darted after her, enjoying the game. It had been too long since they'd played like this, especially at night. She loved going out at night.
Lotus couldn't help but laugh as she chased her friend and was chased in return. Night swims really were fun.
What she didn't notice was a pair of figures watching them from deeper water. Kato and his brother had been out (sneaking out, rather) for a night swim themselves. Night time tended to be the best time for a pair of sea dragons to go swimming, even in human form, but they hadn't expected to find anyone else with the same idea. |
Leto blinked as he watched the two. Clearly they were both female, but he didn't recognize them.
"Brother?" he asked quietly. "We haven't seen them before, have we?" |
"Not that I remember," Kato replied as he watched them. "I think I'd remember a selkie around here, they're usually not native to the area, are they?"
Leto shook his head. "No, last I knew of, they were native to the other side of the country. That type, anyway. Apparently there are two or three types." He shrugged, watching the mermaid. "And it's been a while since we've seen a mermaid, especially not a single one."
"They tend to live in colonies," Kato agreed, nodding. He was more focused on the selkie than on the mermaid. As a species, selkies tended to be very attractive in human form, and he found himself wondering if he'd seen that one before. Unlikely, but still.
Leto grinned briefly. "Shall we go introduce ourselves?" he asked, glancing at his brother. "Or shall we just watch for a little while longer?" Both choices had merits, of course.
"Which would you rather?" Kato asked, looking back at his brother. Both choices had drawbacks, as well.
"Hmm." Leto was quiet for a moment. "Perhaps watch them for a few minutes more? And then we can introduce ourselves." Of course, there was only so long they'd be able to stay out, but they could deal with that problem when they got there.
Kato nodded. That sounded like a good enough plan. He settled in next to his brother to watch the mermaid and the selkie.
"It's strange to see solitary ones," he commented after a moment. |
Leto nodded. "I wonder why they're solitary," he mused. "Clearly they're comfortable around each other, but I don't see any others around." He paused. "I wonder if they live together?"
Kato blinked.
"That would be unusual," he said. "But I guess if both are solitary, they would want some sort of company... We know this area, though, where in these waters would they live?" |
"I don't know." Leto shrugged. "Maybe they have a cubbyhole somewhere we haven't found yet? It's possible." Not likely, but possible.
"It's possible, I suppose," Kato agreed. "Selkies need air, though, don't they? Being technically air-breathers?"
"I... think so. I've never actually asked where they live." Leto shrugged. "You could go ask her." He grinned, mostly teasing.
"You go ask," Kato replied, nudging his brother. "It was your idea."
"Yea, but I'm not the one who's interested. Besides, I'm not going to break up their playtime." Leto shot a shit-eating grin at his brother.
Kato rolled his eyes and gave his brother a shove.
"No, you're too busy trying to catch a glimpse of that mermaid's chest whenever she turns," he retorted good-naturedly. |
