"Well, take into account hunters, fights between fledgelings, and those nightwalkers who get caught out after sunrise," Katherine pointed out. "And nightwalkers are getting more and more common, since so many are being turned and not inheriting the sunlight immunity." She paused. "Well, not immunity, per se. More like resistance. Even daywalkers will burn if they stay out too long."
Leila nodded. "Put like that, it makes more sense."
"And like I said, I think the seventh generation is the youngest," Katherine said. "Carlos is third generation, but his sire waited a long time to turn anyone. There aren't many in the seventh generation, but they are there."
"With Vlad being first generation or just not counted?" Leila blinked at him.
"Uncle isn't counted," Katherine replied. "He's, for all intents and purposes, ground zero. His fledgelings are the first generation."
"Kitty's sire is first-gen," Carlos added. "And anyone she chooses to sire will be third-gen like me." He gave Katherine a sideways look. "Although she'll probably be the oldest one to sire her first fledgeling probably ever. Most are about my age when they sire their first." |
"Waiting isn't a bad thing," Leila said primly, looking at Carlos. "Just means her first will be important. And probably better off than most."
"I've mentored a few fledgelings," Katherine defended. "Just... never sired any."
"Babysitting," Carlos replied, waving a hand. |
"Difference between babysitting and having a kid?" Leila guessed with a grin.
"Pretty much," Carlos agreed.
"I babysat you for a while," Katherine said dryly. "Details," Carlos waved it off. |
Leila grinned. "Now that sounds like something I want to hear the details about." Because she was sure it had entertainment potential.
Katherine grinned and shook her head.
"Maybe another time," she said. "No sense in embarrassing him before we make it to Ireland." |
"After we get to Ireland, then." Leila grinned, looking between the two expectantly.
Carlos just groaned.
"Fine, but only if Kitty tells you part of her story as well," he replied. "Carlos!" Katherine objected. |
Leila eyed them both. "Now why would you object so strenuously to that?" she asked quietly, glancing at Katherine. "You've told me bits already."
"My life story is a bit... bloody, in some parts," Katherine replied. "And boring in others, but still."
Leila shrugged. "Okay. That describes about half the people on the planet, but okay. It's up to you, as always."
Katherine sighed a bit.
"If you want to know, you need only ask," she said finally. Carlos nudged Leila a bit. "She spoils you," he teased her softly. |
Leila snorted after a moment, shaking her head. "Come on. We'd better get going if we want to make our plane."
Both vampires nodded, and the group made their way to the airport. The flight was a few hours long, but the plane landed with an hour or so of darkness to spare. As soon as they were on Irish ground, both vampires shuddered slightly.
"I felt that," Carlos muttered. "Indeed," Katherine murmured in reply. |
"What?" Leila frowned, looking around. "I didn't feel anything. What is it?"
"Lots of energy," Carlos replied.
"Old magic," Katherine added. "Ireland is the homeland of such power, after all. It stands to reason the land is saturated with it." She briefly shivered again, crossing her arms over her chest to hide the fact that the shudder was more from pleasure than discomfort. |
"Oh." Leila paused, looking around, and then shrugged. "Nope, can't feel a thing." She looked between the two.
"Well. Shall we get our bags and head to the hotel?" |
Katherine and Carlos both nodded and followed her to get their bags.
Leila got her bags and went to go find the correct shuttle, anxious to get to the hotel so she could go sleep.
Katherine and Carlos followed her. Carlos moved just as quickly; he wanted to be inside when dawn broke. He didn't really plan on burning up, it tended to ruin everything.
